Does this lens have macro focusing capabilities without extension tubes? I saw someone shooting bees in macro a while back, but I don't think that I've seen anywhere that it has Macro focusing on it.

Not sure as I don't speak Japanese. When I was watching the auction, I think they were selling these in big numbers so I assume in the thousands of dollars.

I did buy Tuna sashimi (around 30-40 slices) in the same market for about $4 US dollars. The best tuna I ever had.

I think the record price for one tuna sold there is around $60k.

I had some pretty good sushi in La Jolla and I prefer the one at the Tsukiji market. Maybe, if I was from Japan, I would prefer the ones in Cali.:)

It's very good if you prefer the tele end of the range. For a more useful
walk-around focal length range with great performance, get the
17-55/2.8IS.

As I said, I wonder if any of my other lenses would benefit from a recal.

I'd buy local. Go through the copies they have in the store.

I've recently sent my 9mth old "brick" back to canon for recalibration. The store I bought it from ships it for free and I'll hopefully get it back in 5 weeks or so. I wished I tested the lens instore and chose the best one.

My brick is soft wideopen and it exhibits minor front focus enough to make the eyelash detail soft.

I tested my brother new 24-70L and this is what made me decide to ship out my lens. His copy is very sharp widopen on my 5d. My copy of this lens was very inconsistant wide open. I had some sharp photos and some very soft. People cannot blame user error since using my brothers copy gives me consistant sharp wide open performance.

I love this lens and from f/3.5 its very useable with its sharp IQ straight out of the camera (jpeg). For the beans it cost $$$ I'd say make sure its a performer at wide open.

Even my Sigma 18-50EX on my XTI puts my 24-70L to shame wide open.

I'm hoping when I get my lens back it'll be acceptable/useable widopen on a consistant basis without any front focus at all focal lengths. If its not I'll ship it out again.

Thanks man.....I'm still around.....just working my rump off on my house. Renovating and winter preparation. I have insulation in my eyes...in my lungs.....in my crack....well, you know.....

Gov. Sarah Palin is going to be in my town tomorrow. I'm going to try to get a few shots but it will be with my EF 70-200mm and a Tamron 200-500mm, both using a Kenko 1.5 TX. I'm sure I'll be too far back to make much use of the EF 24-70mm.

Small apertures (large f-numbers)

It might be more accurate to say "moving from larger aperture(s) to smaller aperture(s)".

Who knows....maybe the term "stopping down" is ancient lingo that perhaps used to be applied to glass plate cameras or something and still remains today. I'm sure every language has it's share of those goodies........references to things that no longer exist or are no longer in use....

"Stop" refers to 'stopping light from passing through the lens'......
(I'm assuming) that "down" refers to the aperture size. Maybe it just made it all easier to apprehend to say "stop down the lens".....being that the smaller aperture vs. bigger f-stop numbers are a bit confusing initially.

Do you use AF and then bump the focus ring or do you throw the focus switch to manual and pretty much don't use AF at all?

Like everything else, it probably depends on the circumstances.

I did use just my 430 for that. =D

Exposed 2 stops below ambient with the 430 to light the subject properly.

Tip - shutter speed controls ambient - aperture controls flash exposure. ISO equalizes them both.

Shot through a 32" diffuser 3 feet above subject.

Just thought I'd post here to get the advice/opinions of people who already own this lens.

I do quite a bit of event photography these days and I've been lucky enough to be able to use a flash with my 24-105 or just have enough light to use it without a flash (in cases I couldn't use one).

Just wondering if it would be worth me getting the 24-70 2.8L too to compliment the 24-105 (the 24-105 as a street/family lens and the 24-70 as an indoor event/work lens).

I will also be getting the 70-200 2.8L IS and the 5D mkII later (FYI).

Nice shots BTW.

I'm considering trading/selling my 24-70L for a 24L or 35L.

My 24-70 is VERY sharp and focuses well. But on a 5D MKII (which I plan on getting eventually) I think an all prime set up is ideal.

That's one reason, yeah. Another is the subject/background isolation on a 21mp FF sensor with a fast prime is going to be amazing.

Would this lens be a good choice for my new and only canon 50d ?

If i got this 24-70 would i notice better clarity and detail than the 28-135 kit lens??

x2x3x4x5x

Yes, it's MUCH better than the kit lens.

It's between the 17-55 f/2.8 IS vs the 24-70 f/2.8L. If you don't plan on going FF anytime soon some prefer the 17-55.

That said - the build quality on L lenses is truly addictive.

Yea but would picture quality be sharper also? Can you go into more detail as to if and why the pictures would come out better?

The 24-70 is much sharper than the kit lens. The optics are simply better. It also is a f/2.8 fixed aperture lens. The contract, color, and sharpness is amazing for a zoom. That's just not something you can get out of a kit lens.

Returning my 24-105 F4 L to get this 24-70 F2.8 for sure.
24-105 is over rated and that extra reach is pointless.

Jannie
21st of November 2008 (Fri), 21:23
No that extra reach is not pointless, when I just had the 24-105 it was very useful, especially when doing candid portrait type work. When I bought a 24-70 I also had other lenses so the 24-105 hardly got used because I always carried the 70-200 2.8 at that stage as well. But if I was back to using only one lens on the 5D, I think the 24-105 would be an excellent choice and the one I had was amazingly sharp, as sharp as any "L" lens I now own. Now that I have many other lenses it didn't hold a place of "favorite" but that was my preference not because it was lessor other than being an f4 and the wide angle distortion which only affected me now and then.

I can appreciate that indeed.
I just don't feel the one I have is tack sharp. I mean I'm getting some good images thus far but I keep comparing to my 70-200 F4 L.

I'll be testing for a few hours in the park tomorrow and I'll hold my decision until then.
