Jannie, your feed back has been great and for that reason alone I will give the 24-105 another couple or so days of try outs.
Thanks again, you've been great.

Are there still quality issues with this lens? I'm thinking of ordering one from Kerso, but concerned how I stand here in the UK if its not tack sharp?
Or have Canon ironed out the issues now?

I don't think I'd trust a teacher using techniques like that.. One hand on the camera, and using an omnibounce at an angle outdoors?

". . . . The lens (this was about six months ago) was soft wide open at 24mm, not terribly but not good enough to use on work for a client and they replaced it. . . ."
This is the main problem with this lens as far as I know. It is, in fact, an issue with mine. But sometimes the outcome is great, it's a throw of the dice. I'll be sending mine in to Canon for non-warranty calibration soon.

Too bad, i took this lens with me to New Zealand and i never took it out of my bag [because the filter still on it, damaged and i was thinking to fix it here in NZ but seems never, and i can use it but my 24-105 do the job for me], so i think i will keep it until i can take of the filter [it is not easy to take it off myself using those tools like a wrench or so] then i will use it outdoor more.

I would like to see the difference between two same pictures... Just to compare...
First of all, 18-55 can't be used on full frame or 1.3x cameras [and i don't want to try those ways of removing lens plastic to attach to those bodies], and it can't shoot at 2.8 or 3.2 even, Second, 24-70 is an L canon lens which means the top best optical line.
I saw many photos from both lenses, but that 24-70 always making me to say WOW and very rarely i will say WOW for 18-55 shots.
I forgot to say that if you choose that 18-55 kit lens which is non-USM then the focus is so slow and it is so noisy.
I will not talk about the body performances between both lenses, you can read about that somewhere, but go to the lenses Samples archives for both lenses in this forum and give it a look.

I have the EF-S kit lens you speak of (mine has IS, not sure if yours does too) as well as the EF 24-70. The two are like night and day. My EF-S 18-55 collects dust (figuratively speaking) as it can't compare in edge-to-middle sharpeness of this lens. I'll only use the EF-S if I really need the width which the EF cannot deliver (crop body).
This review compares the 17-55 f/2.8 to the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 which should give you a good general idea of the performance gap.

It's quite a valid point, but by the uninformed. Please don't take that wrong, I mean no harm in it.....heh heh.
There are many different people contributing to this thread and with all levels of experience. Some even own the 18-55 or have owned it. I just sold mine earlier this week on Criagslist. It's safe to trust the input you're getting.
I say all that to say this: Just find a place on your desk to set your 18-55, preferably on a stack of papers. After you get a 24-70L, the 18-55 will already be in place as the paper-weight that it is. It's basically a functional body cover. It's not that bad of a lens, granted, but it can in no way, shape or form compare to the 24-70L. If the 24-70 isn't wide enough for you, just take a few steps back...heh heh.

Actually, here's a question for you guys.
I have the canon 24-70 and I also have a canon 50mm f/1.4 which functions a bit sharper and faster at f/2.0. I've been strapped for cash lately (the economy has already affected some of my business) and the 300 or so bucks it could fetch (canadian) could be nice. Would you guys get rid of the lens or is extra performance worth the 300 bucks despite having the 24-70?

I have the 50mm 1.4 as well, and I love it. It gets completely different shots than the 24-70 (for me, at least, because I almost always shoot with it @ 1.4). I use the 50mm when I don't want to lug around the 24-70 which gets really heavy after awhile. Before I had the 24-70, the 50 was my main lens and it did a fantastic job. I think it's a really versatile lens, but ultimately it's up to you whether you think it's worth holding on to, etc.

I face a similar conundrum as Pearlallica. I could easily get the 24-70L if I sell my 30/85 primes, but I sure as heck love shooting those two primes at f/1.4-1.8-2 (I use two bodies so I don't have to switch lenses), BUT the L would give me wider coverage, and allow me to use the 24-70 on one body and my 70-200 on the other. I mainly shoot at those wide apertures for the shallow DOF rather than low-light, as I tend to use my 580EXII inside all the time. Occasionally though, I do go flashless, high ISO and wide aperture, so the 24-70L would fail in those situations.....ughhhhh, who wants to lend me $600? ;)

Keep the lens. The $300 will come and go pretty much unnoticed.
On the other hand, the 50mm tucked into you kit and forgotten about would be useful if:
A. You didn't want hold up the weight of the brick for a particular shoot.
B. You accidentally drop your brick or it otherwise malfunctions and need the 50mm to get you through the shoot.
C. Other scary scenarios.
The 50mm f1.4 has AF problems I guess by reason of it's design. I had to send mine back to Canon already for this problem. The moral of the story is that it's not a bad idea to have a back-up lense although this isn't much of a problem with L lenses. I'm still a little ways off from obtaining the 50mm f/1.2l heh heh. I'll be getting a 5D Mk1 soon since Tareq wouldn't sell me his 1DsMkII...heh heh.

very good points! They all remind me why I loved the 50 1.4 in the first place. What was I thinking, selling it!? lol
egordon99, we have a very similar shooting style. I used to use the 50 at times without the 580EXii for even more natural looks. I find, though, with the 24-70 2.8 is just not fast enough and for indoors, the only keepers I have are with the use of flash, making the 2.8 factor useless. So ultimately I'm paying for the sharpeness and the zoom range. Of course, outdoors is where the speed is better utilized.
Spazzmoodicus, backup is always something to consider which never popped in mind. Good point! I guess nobody actually plans on dropping their equipment even though it does happen. I don't use a neck strap (just hand strap) so I suppose I'm even at more risk for dropping. I've yet to use the 24-70 for long period of time. I lift weights so the macho in me thinks, "only wimps get bogged down by the brick!". When my thinking gets too cocky I just remind myself when I last shot an outdoor wedding with my 70-200 2.8 IS! I was more soar than I am after my typical power lifting sessions.

Why is this shot in the "Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM - The Brick" thread? Just because the bokeh is similar?

I've been debating this lens for the last year. I recently sold my 17-55, bought a 5D Classic and ordered a "brick" yesterday. It should be here tomorrow.

My brick was delivered today!!! I didn't have a chance to do any photography with it but, man, this thing is bigger than I remember!!! I've played around with the 24-70 in the camera store on several ocasions but I didn't remember the exact size. The physical size isn't much larger than the 17-55 that it replaced but it is much heavier. I can't wait to get some shots with it! The weight won't be an issue...I'm very used to carrying my 70-200 f/2.8 IS plus a second body with zoom or prime.

Got myself old 28-70L in a trade.... sent in for calibration but still not sharp... sent in again and this time I talked to the technician that money is not an issue but please make that old lens good again....
He called back 3 days later that the lens got fungus in one of the elements that he must replace. However, being an old lens, Canon got no spare part anymore....
I was heartbroken until the guy said Canon would like to offer a brand new 24-70L if I'm willing to top up equivalent of USD250....
Now just started playing with it and I am very impressed not only with the lens but also Canon service.... date code... produced on 12th Nov 2008...
I love you Canon...

C'mon, Nick - you should know you don't need IS with shorter lenses as much as longer ones and that it won't help with moving subjects. If f/2.8 is too dark, then you should probably be using a prime anyway. I know I've never wished it had IS. ;)

IQ-wise, though they are pretty close, I like how the 24-70L looks. It's probably not as sharp as my 24-105L (I have a particularly sharp 24-105L BTW) however there are other aspects of the 24-70L that I like, especially the bokeh, color, and contrast.
But despite how you feel about IS DN(:D), I am a real wimp and need my IS. Yeah, I said it. Actually if I had the dough, I would own both, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.(I know y'all looking at my 200L and :rolleyes::rolleyes:) The 24-xx(x) zoom typically is my walkaround lens when I just don't know what the heck I am going to be shooting, like on vacations, visiting the nephews and what not. Otherwise I use primes exclusively.
I was Mr. Flash when I visited my nephews over the holidays. I mean I am happy with the results, but dammit, Canon...make a 24-xxL f2.8 IS lens already!@##$$%%^#$#
