Well, I just picked up my 24-70L today. I am not nearly in the class of most of the photographers here, but it is my goal. Here is my first attempt with it.

I think I need a little work.

I am still torn between the 24-105 and this lens, I went for this one for the speed, but part of me regrets it as I really wanted the focal length of the 24-105 since this will be my primary lens and I was thinking "maybe" the IS would make up for the stop difference.

As the 5D Mark II is only $3,499 with the 24-105 I may switch it out and upgrade my 50D.

Going to try some more shots and see if I can come up with something good.

How much post production (especially sharpening) did you do, can you post an unaltered image? I am currently going through buyers remorse on the 24-70L (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=632751) as I don't feel I am getting images any where near what you guys are getting and was expecting a lot more out of the lens before PP.

Awesome picture on another note. I want to elevate my skills quickly so as my son grows I will be good enough to make the most of the moments.

I had someone ask me this on another site, so I'll put some input.

Sharpening is never usually much. About 25 in Lightroom (default sharpening)

Hi.. I did very little PP on this image. If you are having problems with focus.. I'd suggest try using the micro adjustment feature to get your lens in sync. I've had a world of trouble with lenses being off.. but now with this adjustment capability.. I'm simply blown away. :)

Here is the SOOC version of the image.... shot raw, converted to jpeg...no sharpening at all.
http://ksnyderphoto.smugmug.com/photos/460374449_dT8Xd-XL.jpg

Just a teensy bit of pp on this lovely gal.. :)

Not too much of a process really. I'm stickler for tack sharp eyes out of camera, but afterwards, I cut them to their own layer and defog, dodge the highlights, and burn the edges of the iris, and the lashes... Sometimes I duplicate that layer and apply a high-pass filter and reduce opacity to taste. About a one minute fix. ;)

Hope that helps a bit. :)

I'm still trying to decide between the 24-70 and the 24-105. There are great photos in both threads so IQ seems to at least similar. I think I'm leaning toward the 24-70 due to the f2.8 as the extra stops are always nice if you can afford them!

Obviously my vote is for the 24-70. I was in the same boat trying to decide... and I found the 24-70 to have the upper edge when it came to contrast and color... Plus the f/2.8..... It isn't worth sacrificing for the extra reach.. Just add a 70-200 to your wish list and all of your ranges will be covered... Or if you need 100mm, get a 100mm macro and use it double duty for portrait/macro work...

Nice man.

Did you know, most Hong Kong people think ducks can't fly?! It's because of some kids story where a duck is raised by a chicken or something. Anyway... they think ducks are so fat and can't fly.

I'm serious, my nephew (who is a Hong Konger) told me he didn't know that ducks could fly until he went to New Zealand to study. He saw some ducks flying in the sky and asked his aunty what they were. When she said "ducks" he was very shocked.

Wanted to test this. I asked his mother. She said ducks couldn't fly. When I told her they could, she thought I was joking and didn't believe me.

So I have been flipping through this topic page by page. Wow this is a sharp lens. No argument there.

One thing that has been striking me though is that the photos that really jump out at me are all (well 95% of them) taken with the 5D. My brother-in-law has the 5D and loves it because it is so silky smooth. Combined with a tack sharp lens and well... you have seen the results here, or at least I have.

Crap, now I gotta save up for a 5D! (My wife is gonna kill me)

BigDaveE
9th of February 2009 (Mon), 09:46
Well the reason that most are taken with a 5D is because 99% of people with a crop (XXD/XXXD) who can afford this lens will instead get the EF-S 17-55mm.

This is the only fast/2.8 Canon option for comparable focal length on a full frame.

I have one of these and it is a very nice lens. It would be perfect if it had IS (at the same cost - which I know is impossible). Hopefully will contribute to this thread when the weather breaks...

I'm very happy with my copy. It's AF is spot on "out of the box", with my 40d, 5D and 5dII, which is nice. I tried 3 copies about 4 years ago and ended up buying a Sigma version instead. But a few weeks ago, I stumpted up for the Canon version and I'm very happy with it.
Optically, there's little between the Canon and Sigma. but it's AF, build, weather sealing and general feel-good factor are like night and day. The Canon is a little wider at 24mm too. It's heavier and larger as well.

madhatter04

^ More so on full frame. I've used it on both and can say the full frame world (with this lens) is a lot sweeter. However, if you don't need wide on a crop, you can't go wrong with it.

that's because people use the TS-Es to take pics of REAL trains but make them look small... Taking pics of a model with a normal lens is the effect they're going for with the TS-E, so had it been used in that shot it's look like a model of a model...
