From what I've read this is close to being as sharp as a prime, is this true?
Mine is pretty darned sharp, but my 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/2 keep up with it. :)

I wouldn't go that far, but there are some that some copies that are just so dang sharp.
really depends on the copy of the 24-70 and the copy of the prime.

I agree that it varies from copy to copy. I've compared mine again an 85 f/1.8, and yes the 85 was sharper but not by a lot. Nothing that post processsing couldn't take care of.
I'll probably never get rid of my copy, as it is sharp (to me) at all focal lengths and focus distances and focus accuracy is close to perfect (it will backfocus from time to time at near minimum focus distance).

No soft copy here. Falls right in below my 85mm 1.8 - slightly for sharpness.
Color/contrast very nice.

Does this lens vignette a bit at 70mm? It seems many shots here show it, but I don't know if those were intentional from pp modification.

I don't know why every one gets upset with wide open vignetting. Stop down and it does away...or Lightroom has a sweet de-vignetting slider system that works a treat.
Sometimes a little optical vignetting looks very nice, especially with a portrait.

I don't know why every one gets upset with wide open vignetting.
Who's upset? I'm just asking a question, that's all. Don't make something out of nothing.
GMCPhotographics

Sorry Tony, my venacular didn't write too well. I was generalising....test sights and reviews are often moaning about vignetting, but it's a non issue.
I choose lenses that add a natural vignette (85L and 135L) because i like the look it has.
Tareq
22nd of February 2009 (Sun), 11:48
And where you see vignetting? i use all my lenses even my 16-35 and i don't see any vignetting unless you use so many filters with hood then ok, but just use the lens with or without hood and no filter wide open and wide focal length i don't see anything, and i use that lens 24-70 on FF so no body will say it is only with FF and not with crops.
When i will collect my lens from Canon center then i will give it a try and will see which vignetting you are referring to.

70mm vignetting? are you sure or dreaming? if i can't get vignetting at 24mm so how come i will have it at 70mm? and what will cause that vignetting at 70mm?
Tony-S
22nd of February 2009 (Sun), 13:12
It was a question, no more, no less.
Tareq
22nd of February 2009 (Sun), 13:18
It was a question, no more, no less.
I know it is a question, but so strange question, i was really confused and dunno what to answer, if you asked about vignetting at 24mm then we can say something, but vignetting at 70mm, i will tell you that if you will see a vignetting at 70mm then replace the lens or even the camera, it will be almost impossible to have vignetting at this focal length with bare lens.
But don't worry, we don't make it a whole big issue, just it is very different question.

Some very wonderful pictures to those who have shared!
I'm hoping to pick one of these up soon. The first mission is for a family wedding shoot; however, I'm sure it'll find its way in bag rarely and stay on the camera a lot :)
Anyone have any shots with this lense with the Canon XSi body? Curious, as I'm considering using my XSi body as a backup body to a 5D.

WOW...simply, WOW!!
I've looked through this entire thread, and can't believe the sharpness, clarity, and esp the "POP" of the colours that this lens produces. Simply AMAZING!
It has me seriously considering this lens to go along with the 50D that I will likely be getting in the near future. (I plan to get a 1D Mark III, or whatever the next generation model will be called in the future as well)
The only problem with this, is I also want the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 lens, and the gap between 16mm and 24mm is quite substantial. (esp on a 1.6x crop body), so I'd most likely have to purchase another lens. Possibly the Sigma 20mm f1.8.
I realize that I could get the Canon EF-S 10-22 f3.5-4.5, but it's slower, and not quite as SHARP (according to most reviews) as the Tokina.
Now if Canon made an EF 14-70mm f2.8L I.S. lens, which would result in images as SHARP and as BRILLIANT as the ones in this thread, I'd be all set!

I use both a Canon 24-70 and Tokina 11-16 with no significant problems of a "gap" in between them! The only difference is I'm using it on a 1.3 crop instead of your 1.6 crop. I love both of these lenses and yes both brands are sharp when used correctly. Good luck.

Thanks, Sharpstat.
I just calculated the "gap" for both 1.3x and 1.6x crop bodies, and you're right, it would hardly present any problems as far as "missing" focal length (FOV) coverage, regardless of whichever crop body I would choose.
I might decide to go with this combination, since both lenses would be usable on either 1.3x or 1.6x crop bodies. Sweet!
I just hope I'd be able to handhold the 24-70 f2.8L without getting any/much blur because of camera shake. (The one thing that has me liking the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 I.S.)

About that gap, i did a big lovey nice mistake in the past, which is to buy 10-22 and 16-35 both together, so i can see any gap between 10-22 and 24-70 on my crop bodies that time [350D & 30D], but i get rid of that gap completely when i got my FF bodies, so in this case just from 16-35 up to 400 i am covered without thinking about f-stops [16-35, 24-70/105, 70-200. 100-400], that's why i never think about any zoom lens in Canon line at all but only primes way now, even if i use crop bodies i don't have any problem at all, i am FL covered already.
About 24-70L performance, it was my first L and best zoom i got it, when i just bought it in 2006 after my Macro i didn't believe myself, i never have any problem with this lens and all colors are amazing and sharp results, the only issue that may bothering me is about that back focus and from focus, i can't tell if i have this issue but should i care about this problem and check it now [i only heard about this issue in this forum and i didn't know about it at all before]?

Yes, i never look back on this issue now, i don't care, as much i can do what i want then that is important, if others here got annoying with that and they keep changing and replace then fine, they have enough money or discounts or offer to use 100 copies of 24-70 until they feel fine with one.

My guess: ultra wide angle + saturation bump + added vignette (or vignetting CP).
madhatter04
2nd of March 2009 (Mon), 00:59
Actually no... I actually had to DEsaturate the greens a bit because they were sooooo vivid. I don't do a traditional vignette in post. I make a new layer filled with 50% gray, set it to Overlay, and add the vignette on that layer to give it a bit of a different look. And since this is the 24-70L gallery, I took it with the 24-70L, not an ultrawide ;)

^ Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments...
Adrian, I just CS2's photomerge feature to stitch the 16 images together... There was actually another 4 frames (2 on each side of image) that I cropped out... But it sure didn't hinder on the overall magnitude of the pano...
Again, thanks everyone for your kind word...

magic.. hehe, not really. F22 to keep the sun at bay and a flash (580EXII) on manual power to expose the couple. I think in this case it took full flash power to expose the couple. Depending on on when and where your sun is it can be a bit of trial and error.

Ya... I went to a Montreal Canadiens game and they wouldn't allow me in the rink with my 30D (they called it a "professional camera" - I nearly pissed myself laughing). Only point-and-shoots are allowed. They won't even allow DSLR's for the practice sessions.
But, yeah, nice pics of the players out there in Jersey. Great exposure and sharp too!

Some shots from Taiwan at a veggie restaurant. Not my choice but interesting photo opportunity (macro stuff) for the week-old 'brick' at the time...
The 3rd shot is at the national museum at the edge of Taipei. This is front structure w/ the main building up on the hill framed by the front gate.
This is a "brick" and 50D pairing.

I think this was about a 50% crop. I took the photo from the shortest focal distance but I can't tell you exactly what that is. I know I had to back up when I got too close.
