Thanks Colin,

I always feel that if you can grab 2 or 3 shots that you are happy with from a outing such as this then it was successful. I probably captured a half dozen or so in a day and a half in NYC. Of course I had to fill two 8GB and one 4GB compact flash cards to get this. This one is one of my favorites since it took much effort and planning, and luck to get it. Love the brick.

Thanks again.

I am in love with the lighting in these! Any chance that you have a picture of the softbox setup? I've been using silver bounce Wescott umbrellas with my Sunpak and 580EXII, but the light just seems to not get soft enough. Maybe a shoot through white umbrella or a softbox would do the trick?

Question: is the Singapore paper (for get which one) still running the 7:59 AM moment?
I saw this several weeks ago as i was passing thru Singapore.

Basically - the staff photogs shot pictures around Singapore at 7:59AM and the paper will display one once a week in a column.
I thought it was/is a great concept.

Hello all :) I finally got the camera (40D) I have always wanted for my b-day last month and have been having a blast taking photos the past few weeks. I started out reading as much as I could online, researching, reviews, etc. trying to decide on the lens I wanted, and it came down to the EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 and the EF 24-70mm L. What a tough decision! I went back and forth b/w the two for 2 weeks before settling on the 24-70. My first copy was soft, and my local store exchanged it after verifying. I now have a super sharp copy, and am loving it!

Here are 2 photos thus far. These are from my Flickr account:

I think it's a very nice shot, but if the blue is unnatural, it would be easy just to pull back the blue channel saturation, or play with the white balance.

Wow. You sure got a sharp copy. Congrats.

So I rented this lens for about a week and immediately began my hunt for one. I ended up getting this one from franklinn here on POTN. Here is a shot I snapped of my son this afternoon.

Many complain that their brick is not sharp wide open. Mine is. Maybe they have inferior copies or it is user error.

Mine is sharper wide open than my Nifty @ f1.8, f2.8 and f4. After that, wide open is about equal to my Nifty (at ~f5.6 or so). It produces better color and boken, of course.

I love my brick, that is why i created this thread, this lens open my eyes to another Canon L lenses, it was my first L then i didn't stop until 2008, but i will not stop buying any L in the future, but still my 24-70 is my favorite lens, i even take it with me in Scotland and New Zealand where i can't use filters on it and i didn't use it as well but because i love this lens i can't leave it at home, next travel i will take with me and i know i will not use it much there.

Here's a recent set of car photos I had shot. Posted some of these in the 5D Admirers thread. The brick really comes alive on a FF body!

Yes it is, but this time i fixed my 24-70, now i can use any filter on it, so it may be the most favorite lens to be used beside 16-35L, here i always use it for portraits and events or photojournalism either with 1Ds2 or 1Ds3.

It's definitely my most-used lens as well, though for whatever reason, I can't call it my favorite. It will end up paying for itself and the rest of my gear, I suspect, which is reason to love it, I guess... but I just don't love it in the way I do my 135L.

Long enough for what? What are "general purposes"? It's wide enough for most landscapes, and it's long enough for portraits and moderate telephoto. Would it be good at the zoo or on safari? Probably not. Is it good for birding? Not so much.

But as a walkaround lens, sure 70mm is long enough. Some would argue that all you need is 35mm or 50mm for a walkaround lens.

When 'general purpose' is said, i immediately think 'walkaround/day to day' photography. I didn't know it was an unfamiliar term. But thanks for the response.

I knew what you meant, but wanted to point out that there are different shooting styles. What may be the perfect walkaround range for some may be too long or too wide for others.

+1
if you look at Markitos lens line up as example....
Some photog love the 16-35mm as a walk around.
Other will choose the 'brick' (24-70mm).
and some would rather have the 24-105mm as there walk around.

All three of these are excellent photos... I do have a question on the grave photo though... - is that some purple and green fringing on the front headstone that is out of focus? Is that common on the lens or is it just a matter of the image being "pushed" to the limit as far as what could be displayed?

That actually is longitudinal chromatic aberrations, caused by different wavelengths not coinciding in the OOF areas. This happens with most fast lenses, as it is clearest at large apertures. By stopping down a bit you loose this again. You'll often find that with lenses that have great bokeh it si more obvious than with other lenses, as this is caused normally by residual spherical aberrations, and these are the same aberrations when introduced in a controlled fashion, which create the great bokeh these lenses have.

Only true apochromatic lenses or superapochromatic lenses don't have this behaviour, but generally these lenses are relatively slow and cost a fortune, even compared to lenses like the 85L.

Personally, I find the effect rather charming in a way, and it also provides a good indication of your focusing skills, as the area in focus doesn't show these fringes :D.

BTW, most people don't notice these fringes, only the pixel peepers amongst us :D.

Kind regards, Wim
