I was set on the 24-105L but looking through this thread, I'm so much more impressed with the IQ of the 24-70L. I know that's probably the processing, but I've gone through pretty much every page of both threads -- I really think the 24-70L gives better IQ.
Anyone disagree?

Agree completely. I did the same thing and wanted the 24-70 too. I have the f4's for my wide and long, and the 24-105 would have suited my traveling better than the 24-70, but then there is that IQ. I tested both side by side and quickly confirmed to go with the 70. it is a great lens.

Thanks. Is it clear with the man and umbrella shot that the spots are the rain drops in focus? Wasn't sure this intent would translate into the image well.

This was my first lens when I first moved from Pentax to Canon where it replaced my 14 yo 28-70mm 2.8 Tokina film lens. I got it at the same time as my 450D. It is sharp down to the pixel and is my favourite portrait and wedding lens. It's rather heavy so it is reserved for special occasions. I prefer my 16-35II L as my main walk about lens as it's a featherweight compared to my brick. I took it along to my New Zealand holiday but it didn't even get a lookin as the 16-35II L was glued to my 450D. As great as the 16-35II L is, if I'm taking photos of peaple, the 24-70 L is always my first choice.

^conversly, this is my walk around lens. It is the one lens I take, when only taking one lens. It spends so much time on my 5d that I need a squirt of WD40 to remove it sometimes.
I found it a bit heavy when I first started using it, coming from cheap lenses. Then I got my handstrap and forgot all about the weight.

So far from what I have seen, I think that my 24-70 is also sharper than my 70-200 2.8 IS. Regardless, the two work well together.

Not forever, but maybe most of the time. There's no point buying a f2.8 lens if its not useable wide open don't you think? It deifes its purpose IMHO. Before I get flamed for talking nonsense about a lens I haven't even touched, I'm not talking about the brick, but a lens in general.

I've shot with the 24-70 wide open and been happy. I think that f/2.8 is a great working aperture to shoot with both for lower light and some nice narrow DOF. I'd be very disappointed if it was bad on the 24-70. It certainly may not be as sharp as it is at f/5.6, but that's true for all f/2.8 lenses. The point is it is very usable.

If that the fine, to be honest i never worry to use the wide open whether it is 2.8 or 1.4 or 5.6 or even 1, just i buy the lens not for its aperture, but the build quality and the focal length [prime or zoom], i sometimes use 24-105 in low light even i have 24-70.

I find the brick to be perfectly sharp, center and corners at 2.8. I stop down when I need more DOF, not because of sharpness.
I have done comparison testing for sharpness and find no appreciable sharpness gain when stopping down; certainly none without peeping to 100%.
This lens rivals my 70-200/f4 IS, a known sharpness animal, even when the 24-70 is wide open. (My 70-200 is equally sharp wide open, by the way.)

For me, there is a reason to buy an f/2.8 lens even if I don't intend to use it wide open.
My reason is thus (and I'm sure one of POTN's wiser members will point out my flawed
reasoning), if I use an f/2.8 or faster lens on my 1D MK3, all of my selectable AF points
become cross type. And in the world of motocross, should I decide for composition's
sake to use a selectable point other than the center (which is cross type up to f/5.6?)
i want it to be the most precise possible.
Now, if I've misunderstood this, please let me know so that I can start saving money
on lenses. lol.

On the 1D3, all the selectable points are cross-type, with the center point having AF assist points bunched around it. This is, I believe, true for lenses with apertures up to f/8.
When using an f/2.8 or wider lens, a "hidden" cross-type "point", aligned against the center point, is activated, and with this extra precision a tighter spec for the focus point is given.
You still have AF on the 1D3 with an f/8 setup, by the way, but with only the center point active.

Not stepping on toes... And I don't think the optics, build quality, or max aperture are really subjective measures... one's overall impression of a lens is, but that's getting into other things.

I have not, but several of my pro-wedding-shooting friends shot with 17-55s on their crop bodies and swore by them... they all had 24-70s, too, and were really pleased with everything about the 17-55...

My whole point is that you shouldn't buy an L just because it's an L... sure they're nice, but they're not always the best lens for the job... i.e., if you shoot sports, the 85 f/1.8 has much faster AF than the 85 f/1.2, and it's WAY cheaper. There's nothing WRONG with Ls, but the 24-70 is kind of a weird focal length on a crop body, anyway.

Yes, on a crop body 17-55 all the way, I loved that lens. Super sharp, fast af, built well. I owned both lenses for a over a year. Only sold it since I went FF.

The 24-70L is really designed for 35mm film, it lacks the later digital coatings that some of the newer f4 zooms have. Although it's very good at handling flare, it's not quite as good as Nikon's latest version. Although it's not optimised for DSLR's, it's fantastic on a full frame camera, 1Ds / 5D ect. I've tried it on my 40D, and the extra reach is nice, but the use of the wide end is extreamly limiting to it's versatility. On a full frame camera, the 24mm end is just SO usefull. I think that on a 1D series with their 1.3x crop, it hits the right spot, an effective 35-105/2.8...very sweet. Now Canon just needs to design a 12-24mm to compliment it.
If anyone asks me if they should get a 17-55/2.8 instead of a 24-70L on a 1.6x cropped camera, I would say hands down...YES! on a 1D series or a full framer, the 24-70L is the puppy.

I can see where my previous statement could be taken out of context. Reading over what I typed last night, what I should have said was:
"The IS of the 17-55 gives it an advantage over the 24-70, but in the end the focal length of the 24-70 worked better for me. Decide which focal length best suits your needs, and run with it :)"
I originally bought a 17-55, shot with it for a week, wasn't satisfied with the reach, and then rented a 24-70 to do a lens shoot-out. Honestly, I am still a little torn on which lens I want more, but I had to make a decision because I was going insane! Both lenses are amazing, you cannot go wrong with either.
And the whole L vs. non-L gripe... not sure how you directed it at me, as I never once mentioned it.
Anyways, back to the images :)
This was hand-held, albeit me leaning against something using a long-range rifle shooting technique.

Where did I claim that I wasn't an L whore? I'm not saying that they're not nice, just that they're not necessary, and sometimes not preferable. If I still had a crop body, I'd probably have a 17-55 f/2.8.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm curious if this lens not having IS on it is a problem? I'm planning on renting one for a wedding I'm shooting in July. Now I'm thinking I might be better off with the 17-55 or the 24-105?

wedding = 2.8 ftw, forget the 24-105
stops background motion easier, better low light performance, L glass quality, only advantage of EF-S is that it will be wider on your body.

The lack of IS was a selling point for me. In this world of plastic gear and delicate electronics the non IS 24-70L seemed like a lens that could be around a while. Some of my gear is over 40 years old. Most is about 20. Not sure how long IS is supposed to last.

It is a Market, i shouldn't produce a lens that can be an all around and high quality lens, this will make, i am not sure if producing one lens that can be closer to perfect is better selling for the company than producing many lenses each has something special so they sell different lenses rather than one lens, if we do a statistics, you think in the world the sell of 24-200 f2L IS will be more and earning more for Canon than selling 24-70 f2.8 non IS and 24-105 f4IS and 70-200 any one of it [f2.8 or IS versions]?

Hi all,
Yeah stunning portrait there Fabian!
I'll be trying this 24-70mm L lens on my 450D DR XSi with a little bit of lightning photography this season. From what I've seen here as far as landscape-style shots it should be pretty nice, particularly that I'm working in low/no light 80% the time.
I have been offered professional modeling work (off the basis of my lightning and scenery work. Go figure?) so this little L may be helpful with that also?
I've recently been working with a Sigma EX 10-20mm wide angle which is a little distorted when it come to added structures such as poles and buildings (as you guys already know?) so this lens will make a nice departure from the 18-55mm kit lens that I've battled with over the last year or so.
Great stuff here guys, this thread is very helpful indeed!
Take care,
