Looking at the shot it appears his shoe is the focal point on your camera. Are you using center point focus? Curious as to why you shot at 2.8 on a sunny day? F8 or F11 maybe? Cute kid also, love the colors. I still have old shots of my son when he was that age.

Focus looks off, unless you wanted to focus on the bench. You're shooting in bright harsh sunlight, better off waiting until later in the day or trying to find some open shade. Photography is all about light and the trick is finding (or perhaps controlling/generating it with strobes/reflectors/speedlights) the good light and then the "photographing" aspect of it becomes fairly easy.

one more and of course your feedbacks are welcome

how is this for an example....
all natural - no fill lighting - and basic pp

For me - i like the 'brick' - crop body combo - especialy on the 50D

Just like any piece of technical equipment - give the lens several weeks to learn.

honestly i forgot to check the aperture settings on the camera, the kid was running around everywhere so i just shot it as soon as i got a chance

as far as the OOF issue, everyone has been telling me that i think my brick might be backfocusing :(

i usually do the focus recompose method by using the center point

yes i agree the sun was harsh, i just had to work with what i had

thanx all for the feedback!

I find 24mm on a FF to be great for generally wide shots while walking around (without wild wide distortion). This lens has a lovely little brother in the 17-40. I picked up mine, used for $300. It is mint. I use the 17 for strong wide effects or heavy distortion shots (like my current avitar). Both focus quite close.

24mm will not grab the wide interior of a room like 17 does. Still, very useable.

thanks fellas! i am headed out and still on the fence between the 24-70 and 16-35. i'm almost convinced that the 24mm will be wide enough.

in regards to going through my images to find shots between 17-23mm.....i didn't find too many, so i think i just answered my own question.

just want to make sure there's no disadvantage mechanically going with the 24-70 vs 16-35.

I know, it is a flawless lens, i love it and i will never let it down from my bag or collection.

Unfortunately, i rented it, so i had to let it go...i felt like crying when i had to return it, but i have a feeling i will be buying it in the near future...

ill just have to wait it out

Do a favor and buy it, i feel it is one of the "Must" to have lens for Canon DSLR shooters.

Do it. You will never look back. I played around with the 24-105 for quite a bit since I was leaning towards it. Once I spent time with the 70, I knew I was home. Then I only had to make sure I got a good one.

It is so good. It will stick a little trying to get it off the body, I suspect the lens is fighting to stay on. It takes tremendous force to get the sucker off the lens mount :D. Also, the 2.8 is so good (bokeh & sharpness) that I find the aperture wheel very hard to move to f3.2. :D

You'll love it.

Right! Tonight, it is going on eBay :) (Spontanious decision, but i'm sure nobody here will argue it is a wrong one) :) But just looking at these example images makes me smile. I have always thought 2.8 was more important that IS, and i only opted for the 105 because i got a good deal on it brand new.. But even so, hopefully in a week or two time, i will be contributing to this thread :)
