Hey! We have deer, foxes, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, groundhogs, and cows, lots of cows....
We may not be in the hotbead of exotic wildlife, but we do have LOTS of great historic sites.

The colors and the quality is fine. If a non-L is stopped down enough there's really no difference, especially outdoors where it's bright. Be happy with your 40D. There's no real difference there, either.

Sure, a 16-35 will be approximately as wide on a 50D as a 24-70. Of course, the 17-55 f/2.8 IS will be about as wide and a bit longer, so it's whether you want the L or the EF-S with IS. Both are excellent lenses.
But with a full frame, the 24-70 definitely hums.

I do! It works great on my 40D. As long as you're ok with the focal length, it works fine. 24mm is wide enough for most of my shooting, and I like being able to go out to 70mm. My post a few pages back has some shots with my brick on the 40D.

I find it wide enough for my uses. And apart from the crop factor, I don't know how else it (a crop body) would effect the lens performance? Can anyone tell me?

OK Tony, I'll rephrase;)......What is your favorite combo, my guess? The 5D/Brick or 5D/50/1.8
On my 1D3 I'm pretty much glued to the 100-400 for wildlife and the 70-200 and/or the 100-400 for sports and event type stuff.
On the 5D (Classic), my most-used lens is the 24-105. There is, after that, a pretty even tie between the 24-70, the 16-35, the 85L, the 100 macro, and the 50 1.4. Take your pick, I use 'em all, but since the 24-105 is my favored walk-around lens with the 5D it has gotten the honors despite not being as "whatever" as the brick and the primes.
When I'm feeling creative, though, the honors go to the 85L and the macro. When I'm doing up-and close people, the 24-70 and on creative occasions the 16-35. On a tripod, the 24-70 or the 16-35 unless I want, say, the 100-400 to get up close and personal.
With the 85L and the 50 1.4 I like to push myself to shoot hand-held and go for the narrow DOF, really concentrating on getting the right focus, half the time MF and half AF, but that takes patience and a learned skill.
I like to use the 24-70 for free-form people stuff, often with a flash bouncing all over the place, doing fun things with them if I can.
Simple stuff, hey:)?!

I do not like the 17-85 (poor quality) and I do not like the nifty (poor at 1.8 to 4ish) and I do not like the nifty focusing.
The 24-70 is by far my favorite. The 17-40 is wonderful for wide and the 70-200 is a great tele. Still, the 24-70 is always on the 5d. The 40 usually only gets the 70-200 because I use it mainly for sports and wildlife. Sometimes I use a 1.5x too.

You're shooting pretty close @ f/2.8, so the DOF is VERY shallow. Her nose/around her nose is plenty sharp, but once you leave the "area of acceptable focus", things soften up VERY quickly. Have you shot a fast lens before?
I'd say that image looks perfectly fine.

It's at the Liberty State Park. I guess it's Jersey City? You've taken similar pics?
Edit: It's funny cause I was there last night and didn't know the park closes at 10pm. I was the only one left and they closed the gates on me. I tried going on the grass but my car would hit so I had to call the park dispatcher to get me out, LOL.

i picked up a 24-70L as well.
to me, the picture seems soft.
this was shot with a 40d @ F2.8 1/125 70mm ISO100 580EX flash
do you guys think its the camera that is limiting the image quality?
this is an unaltered picture
384984
I have similar results at F2.8 right through the zoom range,I rarely us 2.8 and normally use f4 + if I require a tack sharp image, otherwise I find the colours and contrast great and have to carry out little in processing provided I have exposed correctly in the first place. And no your camera will not be the limiting factor I get sharp images using a 1D with only 4mp I just stay away from f2.8 if I require print larger than 6x4,hope this helps.

do you have any sample pics with your 40d and 24-70mm wide open?
i would love to compare it with my copy.
maybe we can take the picture of the exact same item?

Nothing handy with the 40d, which I do not use much any more. Here is one with my 5d. full frame and then 100%. No sharpening, iso800, 1/125s. Not a great shot but I think it shows the capabilities of the lens. I like eye lash and eye brow shots because they are easy to duplicate by others. Let me know what you think.
I do notice a slight sharpening from f2.8 to f4, but it is very slight. For all intents, this is sharp wide open. DOF is challenging, of course, which could leave the impression of soft images.
My daughter would kill me if she knew I was posting these.....
Can you post a eye lash shot at full frame and 100%? Are we close?

I do not have any 24-70 shots available wide open with the 40d. I barely use my 40d. If I do, it is likely with my 70-200 for sports or wildlife.

I do not care for this look at all. It removed the texture of the skin. Of course this is a 100% zoom but the effect is a fake, plastic look, IMO. Personally, I think some folks worry way too much about noise. I do not find the 5d noisy at ISO800, not even close. I do not find the noise objectional until ISO3200.

What is refreshing is to see news from a different perspective - mainly BBC broad-casted from England.

I've got to used to travel to India when i was a kid many times, and i had watched indian movies like over 200 movies in the past, and UAE population is about 4 millions people about 80% are Indians and Asians.
And this actor is one of the favorite indian actors [he was the top] in the middle east or say in our Arabian [Persian] Gulf region, not talking about India itself.
