I get critisized a lot for saying that the "look" that a good 24-70/2.8L gives to a picture isn't that far off an L prime...it really is the DOF that's the only difference. Your beautiful photograph here perfectly makes the point loud and clear. Just look at the natural optical vignette, the colour rendering and the manner of the out of focus areas.....just sublime. See...Guys....a good 24-70L is a thing of beauty and it should be considered as one of Canon's great lenses...even though it's a zoom.

This would look stunning as a BnW btw ;-)

Kind Regards,

Gareth Cooper

Gareth,

I completely agree with you.
There's just "something" to the 24-70L images that I find more pleasing than the 24-105L. I used to own both, but kept the 24-105L because I usually don't need it. But for the wedding, I borrowed another one, and I agree with everything you said. Color, contrast and bokeh are all better on the 24-70L and it really seems to shine on a FF body too, just like the 24-105L.

I don't shoot these types of even on a normal basis to warrant me purchasing one since I'm pretty happy with the 24-105L.

Getting a good copy is the trick I suppose...though the one I've owned and the one I borrowed this past weekend were both spot on.

Wish I had both...but just not worth it when I've got primes covering that range...

Good for you, but i don't care, i will collect Zooms and Primes, Zooms are done, so only primes is left, and it can be includi9ng 24mm or 35mm or any prime even if it is covered by a zoom, almost i am covered with zoom from say 10mm or 12mm up to 400mm without any TC and on FF regardless that crop factors, so which prime i should get rather than 500, 600, 800,.... then?!!!

Would you use this lens? (24-70L) or a 50mm f/1.4 for portraits? Assuming I'm not shooting anything requiring f/1.4 speed...

thatkatmat

On a crop I'd try the 50, on FF I'd go with the 24-70 @ 70mm

I'd recommend a 70-200 for portraits, though the 24-70 certainly works too.

On a crop I'd try the 50, on FF I'd go with the 24-70 @ 70mm

So all things equal, the 24-70 at 55mm should be better than the prime? (other than the lost of faster speeds).

The main reason I ask, is I just bought a brand new 50mmf/1.4 (still in box), with the assumption I was getting a crop camera...but now I'm considering the FF, so I'm wondering if to save money in the short term if it would just be better to sell the 50mm and use that money towards a 24-70L. What I would lose in stops, I figure I wouldn't need all that much anyways, and eventually I'd get a prime again.

I've actually posed this question in another forum, but I do plan on purchasing a 70-200 as well...although I'm looking at the 70-200 f/4L to make the whole financial aspect of it work for me while still covering all my bases in terms of lenses needed. (I'd eventually upgrade to a 70-200/f2.8IS)

Just wanted to make sure that in that 50mm range, that the L lens would be better than the non-L prime. I was always under the impression that prime lenses are better at fixed focal lengths, but wasn't sure if compared to an L zoom lens if that thought still held up...

Not all primes are better than L-zooms, but many are. A 50 F/1.4 at F/2.8 should be better than a 24-70 at 50 mm and F/2.8.

The only L-zoom range that is really close if not equal to good primes, at (relatively) larger f-stops, are the 70-200s, especially the F/4L IS.

Kind regards, Wim

The 24-70L is great at 50mm f2.8, but the 50mm f1.4 usm at 2.8 is pretty near damb perfect. So yes the prime wins there, but the 24-70 puts in a fine performance though.

I was afraid that would be the answer! I was thinking I'd sell my prime, to help deflect the initial costs of the 24-70 (because I need the zoom capabilities)...but now I might just bite the bullet and do both....

Honestly, it's fine. Just because the prime is a bit better doesn't mean the zoom sucks. Once you reach a level of acceptable sharpness, you're just splitting hairs.

I've been reorganizing stuff in storage as well as the studio. Today they crossed paths for this quickie shot. It took all of a few minutes to set up and shoot.

I'll most likely refine the lighting and switch to a prime lens for the final shots... As I have a half dozen or so systems to shoot like this. Commodore, Sun, SGI and Apple to name a few.

Wow. I had the exact same PC, and the same books. Brings me back.

I rented the 24-105 L over the last week and while it's an extremely nice lens it didn't really blow my socks off. Now I'm considering the 24-70. Will I miss the extra length? Decisions, decisions.:)

I like the 24-105 as a walk-around lens on my 5D -- it is a very nice combination for everything from wide angle to a bit of a telephoto lens.

But, there are occasions when I'll pack the 24-70. It really seems to lend itself to great portrait, close-up shooting, flash photography, tripod shooting, all kinds of things.

I think either lens is a win-win. I got the 24-70 to use with a 30D, but rarely used it. I got the 24-105 as a "kit" lens with the 5D, and it became my most used walk-around lens, but now I use the 24-70 a lot with my 5D as well as my 1D3. In fact, it has a nice weight balance with the 1D3 -- both heavy:)!

Nope, you have the 100-400 when you need length :)

Seriously, try out the 24-70L...Mine blows my socks off every time I use it. So far I've spent $1190 on socks since June

I just have a hard time adjusting to f4, it's just slower than I want (usually) The 24-105 is one sharp piece of glass with amazing IS and fast AF....I just can't do f4....I'm a little tired of my 70-200/4IS too, I mean, it's super fast, super sharp, IS is better than it was with my 2.8's but my moving targets just don't lend themselves to f4....Also, I love the creamy bokeh the 24-70 provides....At 70mm you have a darn fine portrait/flowers/sports lens.

I didn't see the first size your posted, but if it was very large then you downsized it too much, you can post up to 1024 size, and you even didn't post 800-900 widest side, so you can resize your photo up to 1024 widest side and post it no problem, and what problems is with you server? use different server in this case.

Nicksan, my 24-70L is a great too. My copy is sharpest at the 24mm end and is a wee bit softer at the 70mm end. But still perfectly useable and certainly not soft per say. I think it's easy to get caught up in the pixel peeping brigade here. It's certainly sharper across the zoom range than any other standard zoom that I've used so far. I consider my 24-70L to be as sharp as my fast primes wide open. It's easily my most versatile lens in my bag and if the light's good, I'll run with it all day.

Yeah, either I've been very lucky (though I would rather have that luck translate into winning the lotto!) or this "problem" with this lens is way over hyped.

As I mentioned before, I used to own one, bought used, and also borrowed one not too long ago, and they were both fine, as is the copy that I recently purchased.

I remember you wrote about the 24-70L having a prime-like quality to it and I have to agree. There's something about it that sets it apart from the 24-105L, which I traded to get it. Don't get me wrong. The 24-105L is a fantastic lens, but I found myself not using it too much since I have primes in that range and I never find myself with just one lens. Never.

That said, I can already tell I miss the 3 stop IS in the 24-105L. But I think I'll do fine without it.:D

Heh, indeed. It's a bit of a beast:

Coming in at 33.6 oz (950g) or TWO POUNDS+. Size wise it's no slouch either at 3.3x4.9" (83.2x123.5mm) - even more intimidating when you throw on the hood.

But it's not so bad in actual use - I find it well-balanced on a 1D/1v body.

All three of mine have been everything I could ask for in a walkaround 24-70, well except for no IS. Perhaps there is some weird copis out there but I'm 3 for 3 so far. :)
That something that sets it apart is the 2.8, with a wider aperture you'll get that primelike look, especially at 70mm and 2.8. I won't sell this lens again until they come out with one with IS.

I just rented this lens for the next week. Trying to decide between the 24-105 and the 24-70 for purchase. I already rented the 24-105 and it was a nice lens, but it did not blow my socks off. My only concern is the 24-70 not having IS. Hopefully, I won't need it. 2 lbs. is heavy, but I hand-hold my 100-400 all the time for baseball and it doesn't bother me - and it's 1 lb. heavier.

In your opinions, what are the best things to shoot with the 24-70? I'm going to shoot everything in sight over the next week, but is there a particular type of subject that sets this lens apart from the others?

I can't wait. Should get it this evening.

thatkatmat
16th of September 2009 (Wed), 12:44
it's just a great general walkaround, 24mm on FF is very nice, but I think mostly I use it for portraits and flowers at 70mm and @2.8 to melt away the backgrounds of my subjects much like I would a prime lens.

Then it should be perfect... You can use it for ANYTHING.

It's a good, all-around range of focal lengths at a bright enough aperture for general use. It makes a good people and studio lens in particular - one reason it's so popular with wedding photographers. Indeed, I used mine for this particular reason last weekend. I use it for travel, studio, field, events and even macro shooting. Truly my workhorse.

nicksan

To me it was the f2.8 and the bokeh. I feel the 24-70L also has better color/contrast. Just the overall look is better. The 24-105L ain't no slouch though. The 3 stop IS can be a godsend and it can go to 105mm which is pretty great for a walk around lens.

I still plan on using my primes even for walkaround, however I wouldn't hesitate using the 24-70L when the situation calls for it, knowing I am getting great IQ.

GMCPhotographics
16th of September 2009 (Wed), 14:51
I'm not too fussed about an IS unit, if light is low, I'll choose a fast prime...it's a betteroption than an IS unit (IMHO). I usually carry my 24-70/2.8 on my 5DII (better iso) and a 135L on my 5D. But in my bag is a full compliment of fast primes, should I need to go faster :D
I've tried a 24-105L, it's a great lens. A perfect all rounder, but the 24-70L is something else.

My daughter decided to cut all her hair off, and then announced that we were going to go out and take pictures of her. She put on white makeup to play havoc with my flash, since the sun was going down, and since I'm not used to shooting flash with my 1D3, I fumbled and couldn't get flash compensation right until it was too late. Here are some shots that, after cranking down the highlights in Lightroom, came out OK despite battling with the makeup:
