taken earlier today at the Seoul drum festival. great show.

there were all these pro's walking around taking shots of the performers before the show, so I slapped the hood on the brick and blended in.

Thanks. I was standing there waiting for someone to do something interesting, and she must have seen me.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing, I normally use mine every chance I get. Too many kids running around here just waiting to put fingerprints all over my lens.

At that moment, I had just swapped lenses, and hadn't put it on yet.

It just seems over here its more of a fashion statement than actual functionality. Half the time, people here are shooting with their hoods reversed.

Markitos, I just got my motorcycle licence. Bike and the mountain always seems to make a nice photo.

liclic, nice looking Evo. I still like the pre Evo 10 style.

xcon85, fantastic shot! Love that smile. Perhaps even a tighter square crop loosing the top part would further enhance the image? :)

Mast3rChi3f, great series! Particularly like that fist one. Gorgeous lighting.

I think the square crop looks much better. Re-posted above ^^

I just love this lens, it's definitely my most used all-around lens. It's a bit heavy to carry around but it's well worth it. Got it used for almost half price but in absolute mint condition.

1/80, f/2.8 @ 52mm, ISO 400. Handheld with 5Dii. My one-and-a-half-year-old frenchie bulldog taking a whiff at the rose bushes. (BTW my first photo post!)

This lens has just been delivered to me.

Quick question,

At the wide end, is it right that you have to turn the zoom with a little more force to zoom in? I figure it is like this to stop zoom creep (or whatever it's called), but I just wanted to check this is a feature rather than a problem.

I remember my friend's copy had that. When I purchased mine, it didn't have it... So I'm not sure if the lens is supposed to have that or not.

I am using this on a crop body and really like it for portraits. I usually shoot wide open to get some background blur so it is never quite as razor sharp as I would like, but over all I am really happy.

Not a myth, just greatly exaggerated and hyperbolized. I have no doubt that there are some "bad copies" out there, but most people find this to be a great lens, on the first try.

Well, look at it this way. Even if there are chances it is a bad copy, it still can be an amazing lens. I know I am going to order it (TODAY!), knowing there is a small chance it can be bad. Worst case I'll send it in to get calibrated if Micro Adjustment can't fix it.

And even with bad copy it could be better than many 'good copy' lenses out there, i will always be happy with bad copy of 24-70 over good copy of kit lens or 28-90 that i have or sigma 70-300 that i sold out without any regret, but i am lucky i have a good copy unless i have some of back/front focus issue that i never tested or had a problem when i took thousands of photos with the brick so far.

I've been playing catchup with some earlier shoots. So, this summer I came across a patch of sunflowers that was being covered by a lot of bees.

I had the 1D3 with the 24-70, which has a nice close MFD and so was able to get some nicely framed flower shots like this:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/118225896/original.jpg

And then I moved closer to the MFD for more almost-macro shots like this:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/118266183/original.jpg

The nice thing is that the shots resolved so well that I got some good 100% crops:

Yes, it's heavy. :)
Weight is relative :P I really just opened up the box around my 24-70 and I like the weight. I prefer a bit of extra weight than a lens which is too light. But ofcourse, you'll have to be able to handhold it as long as you need. I think I can, but that is different for everyone.

Oh, and my test shots say: Dang I am a nice lens, even wide open!

I just spent the weekend packing a gripped 5D with either the 24-70, 70-200 2.8 IS or 85L on it. 9 hours each day - it gets heavy but the results are worth it. :)

A big plus about the 24-70 being heavy is that it helps balance when shooting hand-held. Your left hand actually has something with heft compared to shooting with a prime or lighter wide lens. If you get a good feel of using it that way you'll see what I mean -- you right hand has some more freedom to work the controls because it's not stuck with most of the support.

I choose the lens 24-70 because it was more expensive, and I did not care about it at that time. I was switching from another system and it cost me two arms and four legs anyway.
Another reason is, because I was getting 70-200mm at the same time and it made nice combo 27-70-200 f/2.8

This is amazing lens. I love it. Maybe not the same way the guy loves his girl, but... Do I have the same smile when I use my 24-70??? :)

1.) Go out and shoot.
2.) Keep shooting and enjoying your new lens
3.) Come home and marvel at the great pictures you have taken while you were not wasting time shooting test charts.

If there is an issue with it you will know from the initial pictures. Alot of the "issues" you hear about end up being user error. I don't worry about it, If something leads me to suspect my lens is having issues I might shoot some charts but otherwise just enjoy it.

It's been a while since I did any tripod shooting, but I was out of town yesterday and saw this old county building in a small town that was backlit on a gloomy late afternoon, so of course I had to shoot it and mess with it in Lightroom to be a less gloomy building but retain some of the gloomy sky.

Shot with the 5D and the 24-70, 1/10s f/11.0 at 28.0mm ISO 160:

I would rather have the 24-70 for a fast walk around and plan on getting a 10-20 to use for the rarer occasions when I need UW. I used the 17mm on my 40D for awhile and it wasn't wide enough for my wide angle use. I also got mine for a great price so I couldn't pass it up.

I am looking for a general walk around lens and I don't normally shoot very wide. I tend to shoot my 18-55 kit lens from around the 35-55 end of the lens more than the other. Also, after spending more time than I care to admit looking at both sample archives I had more "WOW" moments on the 24-70 archive than the other one. As for the "L" factor that did weigh in on my decision, I love my 70-200 f/4L, and lastly I may get a full frame camera down the road and want to have a lens that will work with it. Anyway, not disagreeing with you just explaining my thought process.

Yes... because, on the 1.3 crop, it's still ~30mm FOV, so still decently wide. I've used it on the 5D a lot longer, though, so that's still usually my frame of reference.

Maybe they already own the 10-22, so they don't want to overlap and repeat focal length they already have covered, so they feel that with the 24-70 they have everything covered from 10mm up to 70mm without repeating any coverage.

If the 24-70 f/2.8 was an I.S. lens, I think you'd see a lot more people choose it over the 17-55 f/2.8 I.S. esp since it is an "L" lens. JMHO

Thanks, that was my first "non-test" shot with my new rig (my first DSLR, period). Made the same switch, although I sold 24-105 a few months ago. 24-70 should be here monday morning

I just shipped my 24-105 out today, B&H is delivering my 24-70 on Monday as well. ;)

Get both. The 24-70mm for all-around use, and the 35mm when you need low light, narrow DoF, small size, etc... Though the 35mm alone would be a decent substitute for the zoom. Can't go wrong with either...

Have had this in my hands for 48 hours now
amazing
I've used one of these before, for a few minutes
but actually playing with one, testing it, pushing it, seeing what it can do...
so clear and sharp
got to go find a duck now!

Ryan- Very cool! Interesting lighting, yet very "dark". I like it :)

Yes, those were taken in the Old City. The first is a church just outside the walls. The second is me standing up on the ramparts with the Dome of the Rock in the background. Third and fourth are the two domes of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The cross in the third pic is much larger than the one in the fourth and it was really gleaming from the sunlight (but on the other side). The sun hitting it put the one in the fourth pic to shame and I really wanted a picture of it from the other side...but as many times as I have been down there, I couldn't figure out how to get to the spot I needed to be in to capture the shot. My buddy who was with me was getting a little impatient as well, so we just headed back to the apartment. Maybe next time...

My "Brick" is AWESOME when I can shoot at f/5.6 and higher, but it is a little soft at f/4 and below. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix it...

Here's one that I forgot to post...
