Well, I've been using this lens for street photography lately, with the 5D Classic, taking a break from the 24-105 though I miss the IS.

Recent examples from the Portland, OR Zombie Walk, but with considerable PP in Lightroom due to the bright sun/shade conditions and not using a flash:

No offense taken, but it IS the truth. (I'm neither a genius nor a millionaire...though my mom always said that I was smart and not to believe all the other kids...:)) That shot was probably around #50 taken with the camera...which is my very first DSLR. (Never had a film SLR either...) I am the kind of person that researches the hell out of things, especially when I am new to them, so I am usually a little ahead of the curve.

As far as shooting in RAW goes, I shot picture #1 in RAW and I haven't looked back. I figure if I can learn RAW, then JPEGs should be no problem.

I have no illusions though...I am GREEN as hell when it comes to this stuff and I have TONS to learn. Which is why I am on here all the time.

I have no aspirations of being anything more than an "enthusiast"...I just travel to some really cool places and when I am old, I want GOOD pictures to look back on.

This is how I usually look behind the camera. This is my "Which %@%$# button do I push again?" face...

wow! Cool! haha and I thought I was crazy for have bought a 40D/17-85IS combo as my first dslr and that was last year lol. I guess you are a very fast learner then. So you see I am fairly new myself and my first 3000 or so pictures with my dslr were mostly snapshots lol but it helped me learn the basics and all that. I do read a lot of guides and regularly check online photography forums but I also like to experiment on my own and kinda like the try and fail experience :D You know I am still shooting JPEG most of the time  that's mostly because I have a crappy computer right now and I don't think it would be able to handle Lightroom or at least it would get really slow :( and of course the tiny 40Gb harddrive doesn't help either :lol:

Anyway, the 24-70 is also a great landscape lens even on a crop body

1) cigarette and cigar smoke gets into and stains everything. And yes it's been known to damage electronics
2) the 7d's weather sealed about as good as the 5d MKII..it has foam weather stripping not rubberized gaskets.

I hope he's better informed than you.

Yes, I generally get about 5 guys and we all go into the most enclosed space we can find. Then we light up several cigars apiece, take the lens off the camera, and blow the smoke directly into the camera body. You can also use it as an ashtray, but you have to dump it out and clean the sensor afterwards or you'll get spots on your pictures.

It's outside in a garden, with a slight breeze blowing...but thanks for the concern. The content of your message may have been useful, but your delivery sucked.

Doesn't matter if you're in an enclosed space or not, smoke, ash, etc accumulate visible or not. I'm sorry it's just a common sense thing, I really didn't feel the need to sugar coat something that you should already know.

Grow thicker skin...I thought that cigars were supposed to butch guys up. ;) i was just teasing you man, anyone that's been on the net knows fail pics are all in good fun. You're acting like I slapped you and insulted you personally. Come on!

You're right, stud. I should toughen up a little bit. Thanks for the advice. It's cool, I understand that people act differently on the internet...usually less polite and civil than they would be if they were standing face to face with the other person.

As for the smoke issue...if smoking a cigar outside and in the breeze is a problem, then I should probably never take my camera outside...ever. It's the Middle East. Everyone smokes. Everywhere. If it's that big of a deal, then walking down the street with my camera exposed will probably render it inoperable in less than week.

I'm not saying that smoke can't/won't damage it...but I doubt smoking a single stogie in the open air in the vicinity of a camera is going to damage it anytime soon.

This will be my last contribution to the hijacking of this thread. You can PM me if you have anything to add.

If you smoke alot and have your camera equipment and lens sitting close by over time(years) it can ruin your equipment.

I also do computer amd some electronic repair and you should see when we get in for service a desktop or a laptop and take it apart for service we know right away if the owners are smokers.

Inside the unit is coated with nicotine. looks yellow tar like.

this is way off topic now.... but...
If someone is willing to subject their bodies to cigarettes and not be all that worried about the effects it has on them, do you really think they're concerned about the effects it will have on the things around them?

I have to agree with you. I mean it's like smoking is a huge crime or something. It's their choice besides smoking isn't half as bad as drinking at least people don't get rude or violent when they are smoking.

I was shooting these Halloween scarecrows with the 300 and decided to see how close the 24-70 could get. These shots were handheld with the 300 braced against a tree, 24-70 true handheld. Lighting changed a bit between the two shoots. I included the data on each.
I am really impressed with the 24-70 so far :)

Really getting to like this lens. Colors are spot on and great contrast. I shot these the other day in marginal lighting. This one was more planned and I used a fill flash. In the .RAW, you can see the fibers very well.

Wow, those look great. Love the pink sky.

It's usually so dusty/hazy over here that night shots really suffer. Also, the lighting they use on everything is a very harsh yellow and orange. I guess I could probably filter some of it out in PP, but I really try to keep them as seen through the viewfinder...as much as possible...because harsh, yellow, and orange is what it ACTUALLY looks like. Not the best for pictures, but accurate with respect to how it really looks.

Not to mention that I don't ever have time to really get out there and look for them. Add all that to the fact that I am a total newbie and my pictures seem great until I post them up here next to you guys'.

I just jumped the gun on this lens and am loving it. Choosing this over my 24-105L just for the extra shallow dof, but both really amazing lenses.

I will say I can shoot indoors handheld better with the 24-105 IS. Never knew how good IS would, especially at the long end.

WIth that said f/2.8 suits my needs better.

Depends on how steady your hands are... sometimes I can shoot it at 1/30th, sometimes not.

Just look at that swwet out of focus rendering! Most people think that you can only get this look from fast primes....but the 24-70L is a portrait machine. It has a crazy min focus distance, plus it's focal range, plus it's usefull f2.8 aperture...you just can't get this kind of look from a 24-105 f4 so easily.

Yes, a sweet lens it is. I actually bought the lens for 2 reasons- to replace a lens that I'm giving to my son along with my old 40D and to do portrait work for a local clothing line. The Macro is a great bonus feature and just plain fun to experiment with. This is the first Macro shot I took...

I am seriously considering purchasing one of this. Probably before the rebates expire. Likely sooner. (and I thought I was done..!)

Can someone help me decide though: For my wedding work, looking at my gear, do you think I should go after this, or 70-200 2.8 IS..?

TIA, everyone.

I would say the 24-70 first, I would not find the 24-105 usable for wedding work. That being said, you do have fast primes (100-135-200) to cover the telephoto - I'd run with either those or replace with the zoom, I couldn't see owning 4 telephotos myself.

Hey all,

I've had some fun doing closeup photography with the 24-70. Then, a shot today taken with the 16-35 (a close flower shot) got me curious.

I have the 16-35, the 24-70, and the 24-105. The MFD of these three lenses is spread out, from the 16-35 the closest at less than a foot to the 24-105 the farthest at 1.48 feet. I decided to check them each out wide open at the MFD and at their maximum focal length (except for the first shot with the 24-70 taken at 24mm, and found that the MFD/focal length combo actually produced quite similar image sizes, although the 24-70 had a softer background.

Anyway, the set is here:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/nov_11_09_wide_closeups

And here are the two from the 24-70:

Thank you, Brad. I am leaning towards getting 24-70L as well. I prefer its focal length over that of 70-200 2.8 IS.

I love the telephoto trinity of 100-135-200, and I don't want to part with it. (plus, I'd like to stay away from the white lenses as much as I can)

I might just keep 24-105, for its conveniency on the road.

yeah LOL... i was joking with my girlfriend that i'd really need a 1ds MK IV when it comes out. i'm pretty sure that that camera would have ISO 102400. if not 204800.

(on the side note... can you imaging 2 more stops after that? 204800, 409600, 819200, 1638400. WOW!)

Soon, soon, soon, soon, soon. Hopefully before the turn of the year! I've been looking forward to this lens for so long. It'll compliment my 1D2 and 70-200/2.8 nicely I think.

How do you all find handholding this lens while shooting candids..??

As a rule of thumb (and it depends on how shaky your hands are), you can typically hand hold a lens at 1 / focal length... so even on the long end of the 24-70, you should be OK (1/60 or 1/100). Anything much less than that and you're going to get blur from movement anyway, right? As nice as IS on this lens would be, it's not really necessary, IMHO.

(That's not to say that I won't check out the 24-70 2.8 IS if/when it ever comes out.)

I am sure a Nikon D700 or D3s would be able to handle those kind of low light shots a lot better :p ;) *runs away from an angry mob* :D

HA! I would definitely ditch mine and get the new version whenever it will be released -.-

We've all heard there are "bad" copies of this lens out there. How does one know whether it's a "good" copy or a "bad" one..? What should one look for..?

Thank you all.

I made the same comment a while back and was advised that most "bad copies" are actually operator error. A good example was when I did some shooting a few days after an airshow. I changed lenses and forgot to change the AI Servo. The lenses was "hunting" on a subject and throwing off the focus. I went to full auto for the shot and it was good. I then started going through settings to find the cause. Not all lenses/body combos react the same way, so check everything before declaring the lens a "bad copy". Canon's quality control seems pretty darn good. I have several lenses and a few bodies- all work well. Oh ya, there was that time I put my 1.4 converter on my "out of the box" 100-400 and the auto-focus wouldn't work. Just great, I travel the the Reno Air Races with a brand new lens that won't focus. I took off the converter and it worked fine. Reading that boring paperwork they pack around the lens came to mind. :o

This has been my walkaround zoom for some time now, and it is with a heavy heart that I have made the decision to put my 24-70 up for sale. I'll still continue to view the great images you all create with it, but I'll be moving to a prime lineup sans zoom. 70-200 2.8 IS went today and the 24-70 is the last one. If anyone is interested, let me know. I'm sure I'll be buying it back in the future. We'll see.

Which primes you would like to go with? I know there are about 8-12 primes in L class that i want to go with.

Currently shooting 35L, 85 1.8, 135L. This will be it for a while, I think. If I find myself yearning for the flexibility of the zooms again, I'm sure I'll be buying this back. Working on a lighter, smaller bag for the time being.

I agree... took me a while to make this decision. And like I said, I'll probably have seller's remorse doing it.

Markitos

I've considered the same, but decided I couldn't sell the 24-70 because if I regret it, I'll never be able to buy it back without losing a ton of money. I've resigned myself to saving up enough to have my cake and eat it, too (primes AND zooms).
