Guys,

Who has own Tamron 28-75? How is it in comparason with 24-70? I have Tammy on my 7D and like it pretty well. I don't know if 24-70 is a significant upgrade but I want it  I don't care about weatherseal. For people that had an experience with both lenses what would you recommend?

Thanks

The Brick has:
- Faster focusing speed
- Quieter focusing
- Better build
- Better focus lock (on subject) in low light condition
- Optically a bit better (even wide open)

That's my quick assessment when I upgraded from the Tammy to "The Brick"... The two real issues, for me, was weight and focus lock... The "focus hunting" on the Tammy was noticable and annoying in low light conditions... Not to mention the noise when the barrel keeps zooming back and forth to focus lock... As with weight, they don't call it "The Brick" for nothing... Hehehehehhe... But you get use to it... Nonetheless, I have no regrets on the upgrade... Well worth the $$$ in my book...

You will like every thing about the brick except, the weight.
Many of use depend on "The Brick" to pay bills. It does that very well, so long as - "The Brick" holder knows how to use it.

Yey! I just picked up my 24-70L and it feels awesome on the 5D! The zoom ring is pretty stiff (I guess it will loosen up with use) and the AF is super fast and quiet. Just had to take a pic of something in the crappy light (or lack thereof) at home. Our “dog” Manfred had to do as a model. The carnage in the background is from the packing up the lens! :D

God blessed you to give you this shot I hope you know that. Great Great Great shot. I want to copy it and sell copies.

This shot, i forced my family [wife and children] to woke up very early about 2 hours before the sunrise, so i took them to the eastern area in UAE where the sun is rising, so i arrived there just few minutes before the sunrise, and good i remember the location so didn't waste time to drive around, i didn't wait and took my tripod and camera and left my family sleeping in the car, it was about 15-20 minutes only to take some shots before the sun coming out, and i am very happy i did have that shot in UAE where we always saying nothing interesting here, but it was a nice weather because in UAE between November and March the best weather we can have.
I wish if i can copy this shot and sell copies, if i live there where you live i can start to sell my works.

Why I don't love it? I dunno.... why are you attracted to some people and not others? It's a technically excellent lens, and has paid for itself many times over, but I just can't bring myself to love it... not that I'd ever get rid of it or anything...

I haven't had this lens for very long, but the feeling I've got is this is a a real workhorse lens, and it covers an important and useful focal length. However, it's perhaps not a very fun lens, it doesn't inspire you like a fast prime does.

I went to the church, where I will be shooting a wedding next month, to take some test shots. There's really a great mood in the place, but it was really quite dark. Shooting at ISO 1600, f/2.8 I was shooting at very low shutter speeds. I'm so glad I went with the 24-70L instead of the 24-105L... f/4 would never have worked.

Alright, well I am ordering this lens as soon as B&H's ordering is open. Took this pic of my new neice with my sisters lens and I fell in love. With both little Coco and the lens!

Anything I should know before I buy? Is there a better place to order from?

Thanks D

im serious! get the 35L! though you will lack the versatility, you'll appreciate the 2 stop difference, light weight, sharpness and DOF. the 35L will make you a firm believer of primes. if you are staying with the 1.6x bodies, consider the 30mm f1.4

I already have a 50mm f1.4 prime lens. So I am thinking this will be a nice addition. Right? Also has anyone dealt with the extended accidental damage warranty from B&H? Im thinking of getting the 3 year on the lens.

I have not. As I said, I used my sisters 24-70 and fell in love. Can you tell me why I would want to look at that over this lens? And why having the 40D makes a difference?

This would be very helpful. At this point I really like the images this lens takes. I also plan to get a 5DmII within a few years...

oh okay....

you camera is a crop camera. it takes both EF-s and EF based lenses. EF-S based lenses are designed for crop bodies, whereas EF lenses can fit both crop and ff bodies. When you take a lens like the 24-70 f2.8L, you have to multiply the focal length (FL) by it's crop factor, in this case, 1.6x. so what happens is that your focal length becomes 38 - 112mm. The 17-55 f2.8 I.S. has a focal length of 27.2 - 88mm. You have a wider Field of View (FOV) with the 17-55 as oppose to the 24-70 allowing more flexibility if you ever shoot groups, or landscape. in addition, the 17-55 has a lighter build quality due to its plastic non-L construction. The 17-55 also has a 3-stop IS system allowing for easier hand holding in low-light condition. Dont be fooled by the fact that it's a non-L, it produces sharp images frame after frame, some would say that it's sharper than the 24-70 and i truly believe that. there are less QC problems with focus shifting with the 17-55.

To be unbiased, there are downfalls with the 17-55. it is well known as a vaccuum as it tends to allow dust in because the lens is not weather sealed, unlike the 24-70. It is also an EF-S lens meaning that it cannot be used on full frame cameras, so if you upgrade to a full frame camera later in the future, you would have to sell this lens with minimal to no loss.

oh i'll just summarize:

17-55
-35mm equiv: 27.2-88
-3 stop IS system
-Lighter build
-produces sharp images wide open
-EF-S only lens, restricting it to crop bodies like the XXD, 7D, and rebel cameras

24-70
-35mm equiv: 38-112
-no is system
-heavier in comparison but build quality is excellent as its weather sealed
-produces sharp image when stopped down
-EF based lens as it's theoretically "upgrade proof"

the 17-55 is a highly regarded lens on this forum, and it would be recommeded by most users even by some 24-70L owners like me. im honestly waiting for a mark II of this lens. i hate using mine.

Thanks a lot whoodie! Ive been saving since september. I got a lot of heat in this forum for wanting to upgrade the tammy to this. Everyone said it isnt going to expand your shooting creativity. Yet what they didn't understand is that i wanted a sharp, rugged lense which would be up to par with the 7D's build. I love the focal range and will sell off the tammy to help bring down the cost.

I debated between this and the 24-105 for a long time. I decided that the 2.8 would allow me to use a faster shutter speed and that I did not need IS. The only other problems I had were the focal length (24-105 suits me better) and the IQ. Luckily I tried out the 24-105 for a day. The IQ out of that lens did not seem worth the money, in my opinion. Luckily I have a 70-200 to pickup where the 24-70 leaves off, so that settled the focal length debate. Overall I am extremely happy with my purchase, now my only problem is that I want f/2.8 on my 70-200 :)

Yup i was in the same boat as you. Looking back and forth between the 24-105 and the 24-70. I settled on the 24-70 because i have the tamron 28-75 2.8 and love that focal range. Like you i know i will want a 70-200 2.8. i think once you taste 2.8 and higher you cant go back!

If you find that it is wide enough for you, there is no need to consider the 17-55 if you prefer the 24-70.

The 24-70 does not "become 38-112" and the 17-55 does not have "a focal length of 27.2-88mm".

I believe one should choose his or her lenses based on his or her uses, needs and preferences, not those of any other individual's uses, needs and preferences.

If you like the 24-70, if the 24-70 suits your shooting style, if you "fell in love" with it, I'd advise you to get it.

did you want me to revise what i said about the FL? The 24-70 when mounted on a crop has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38-112, whereas, the 17-55 has a 35mm equivalent of 27.2-88mm on a crop body. Is that better?

its true that it doesnt change, but we use the comparative focal length numbers to represent how much wider the 17-55 is compared to the 24-70.

then we might as well throw out focal lengths and just substitute the numbers with "wide" "wider" and "widest", and "long, longer, and longest..."

As long as you're comparing focal lengths on the SAME format, than you just need to compare 24mm vs. 17mm. No need to "convert" anything ;)

I gave my son my 40D and a couple of lenses for his birthday. Now I'm trying to explain some of the basics of the art. Although he is a fast learner, depth of field and focal length is a bit more challenging. We took several photos with evrything from 10mm to 300mm. He really liked my 24-70(no can steal from me!) for the ability to capture subjects without too much distortion or compression from long or short focal lengths. The thing he liked about 300mm was the bokeh, but not getting enough with the 24-70 in the image below. So now we are into the dark side of creating the effect of the 300's bokeh with gassian blur. The before and after shots of his car are the result of a couple of hours at the "blackboard". I'm hiding the 24-70 while he's home from college. :)

I've had the 24-70 for a couple years----phenomenal lens, and gets the most use of any in my bag.

The 24-70 came today!! OMG, I forgot how heavy this thing is. Now I really remember why it's called "The Brick". I had one a couple years ago and I remember lugging this thing all over Las Vegas but I guess I was just used to it. Anyway I already love this lens. Here is one of the first shots right out of the camera............

Alright, so here are a few more from today. My wife went to a horse ranch with our son and a bunch of her friends. She shot some sweet pics of the horses! Heres also one of my kid playing with his Hanukkah gift from tonight.

All are unprocessed!

Nothing really special about this image, it just shows this lenses sharpness at wide apertures and nice, rich color rendition.
