Great shots in here lately.
One quick edit from way back when. I love going through old RAW files sometimes and finding images you like over time.

I'm interested in that answer as well, but either way, I'm not sure it matters. Even if it's doctored, it's a great image. Congrats.

Wow, thanks everyone. This is apart of my 2010 firefighter calendar for the Monticello FD (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rohicks/sets/72157622648811719/).
And yes, it is a composite. I so wish there was a way for it to not be! Be awesome to do something like that. And honestly i do have permission to start fires with these guys for photos, but with the weather at 10-20 degrees and snowy. You won't find me heading outside when i can control my lighting indoors. He was shot against the side of a fire truck that was just all red. ;)

I think you'd be surprised, a lot of his photos do not have a "lot" of lights. Mostly just two or three. It all depends on what he is shooting and what effect he is going for. A lot of post work goes into his photos. Plus he has perfected his own style, and I have no reason or desire to copy it for this type of photo.
This was supposed to be just Josh sitting in the locker room by himself and gathering his thoughts after being out on a few runs at the fire department.

OH really?!!! and about 99% of people saying that his own style is due to using a lot of lights and not so much workflow after.
Also aren't his most shots of those people thinking or have some expressions? so yours is not so different or far away from his points in shooting players, musicians, students,...etc.

Go watch his vimeo account and prove yourself wrong. A lot of his shoots are with minimal lights and he does a lot of compositing. You uses only what he needs as any other photographer does.
Stop with your retarded attitude in your reply.
I said most of his not all, and his style is his style.
I have my own style and try not to replicate other styles.
When you refer to style; it is referring the the "look/feel" of an image not the model's expression. Lots of people have the same type of expression in their photos all across the internet.
When you see or think of a Dave Hill photo you think of a photo that has high contrast areas, well done compositing, extraordinary scenes, and great or fast actions, and wonderful creativity.
If someone starts comparing my quality of work with Dave Hill, they need to get their eyes checked. Although I would appreciate the compliment, it would be hard for me to believe their words. ;)

Are there any issues on a crop body with this lens?
Well, i don't use it on a crop body, even though i have the 30D, i use it on my 5Dii only.
The only down side is depending on your shooting style, for me, 24mm is too long on crop.

Looking through my EXIF data it seems the majority of my shots are 24-28mm plus. So I am thinking I should be ok on the focal length.

I did.
I bought my first copy in 2005, and sold it in 2008 when I decided I'd rather have a 24L. After about a month It became obvious that I still needed the 24-70 for most of the shooting I do, so I sold the 24L and re-bought a new 24-70.
I miss the 24L quite a bit, but the 24-70 is just so good.

True to my word I've ordered the brick. I wonder if many people come back to it?
I'm on my second brick. I sold my first one here trying to figure out my shooting needs and went to a 16-35 II. After using that for about a year I am now the proud owner of a brand new brick. Glad to be back in the Brick Club!

I did the same thing! After a few weeks I was less than impressed at the old 24L though I do want the mkII. I was about to get the brick again but then a good offer for a 24-105L came up so got that, it's very nice but I need faster...
My new brick is in the post so hope to be playing with it tomorrow :)

I am in a huge debate to either get the 24-70L or 17-55IS for my 50d. Its such a hard choice cause I look through both lens archives and the pictures are awesome. I am really concerned about the dust/wobbly focus ring/IS going bad on the 17-55IS. Many have told me that the 17-55 is ideal for crop bodies but is the 24-70L that limiting? I shoot alot of portraits and am setting up a mini studio in my garage at the moment. Anyone here with a crop that owned both or swapped one out for the other? thank you

For most of the past 4 years, I've used the Tamron 28-75 then the 24-70 as my main lens with my 20D and 40D. There have been times when I wished I had more width, especially when shooting indoor events. However, most of the time, 24mm FL has been wide enough for my tastes.
I think it depends on the photographer and the environment in which she shoots.

When outdoors its good cause I can use my feet to back up but in indoors I do find it kinda restricting. I have my sigma 24mm and the 8mm difference seems pretty significant from the 28-135. Just really want all opinions and experiences from owners of these two before commiting to the huge purchase.

This was taken looking towards Beachy Head, East Sussex in England. Beachy Head is an amazing place, with a cliff and vertical drop around 530 feet high, making it a notorious suicide spot! Standing on the edge actually makes me feel sick!!
In the distance of the photo you can see Belle Tout Lighthouse, which is no longer working. At the foot of the cliff is a working lighthouse, which you can actually walk to when the tide is out. If you time the walk wrong though you risk getting trapped against the cliff as the tide rises with a 30 minute walk either way to escape! Not good

I didn't use any filters, but it did require a fair amount of work in Photoshop and Lightroom. I used the Graduated Filter in Lightroom to get a balanced exposure between the ground and sky, then the usual tweaks to Curves, some dodging and burning, saturation (to bring out some colour in the sky), but most of all, removing the dust speckles from my filthy Canon 5D sensor :p

Huh? Considering this lens came out well before the 40D came out, why would the 40D be a problem? Heck, folks were using this lens on FILM bodies
http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/24_70/index.htm
Article is from 2004. I believe the 40D came out in 2007.
I use it on my 40D with no ill effects (and spectacular image quality)
And the folks using it on their 5Ds, that body is older than the 40D.

Boy53, really great night shots, I assume you were using a tripod on those that you didn't indicate as hand held? The nights I took pictures were very windy and cold. Needless to say, it wasn't a 24-70L but a24-105L........I must have been sleeping when I posted. I have to say, if I were 30 years younger, I would relocate to OZ....what a wonderful place to live.

It has really been winterly beautiful here lately with snow everywhere. As I took the camera out for a quick walk, I thought I would give the 24-70L a chance (instead of the 17-40L).

It was really foggy, but I think I got at least a few keepers :)
