And here is one from India. Photo isn't sharp because I was rushing and inexperienced at that time. Was taken on my old 40D before upgrading to the 5D MK II

First time using the 24-70L on a XXD series camera. Still as good as with the 1D.

A few very quick shots from Superbowl Sunday, so the 24-70 is capable from taking "snapshots":)! The ceilings were dark so I couldn't bounce and I didn't have any diffuser on hand, so forgive the hotspots...mucked around a bit in Lightroom, then let it be.

well, I am planning to replace my 17-55 with this lens. The main driving factor is the hope that I might go FF very soon. Can someone please suggest how well does it go on a crop body. Just want to check if I'll be able to use this on my current camera body, till the time I upgrade.
Thanks.

Well, it would be the same as 24 on your 17-55 to 70 on your 70-200, so you want to ask yourself whether that is a good range for you. I myself rarely used the 24-70 when I shot with the 30D because I liked the wide-normal ranges like the 17-55 gives. Of course, if you find yourself shooting a lot in the range that the 24-70 would provide, then of course that would be a reason to do the switch, although I'll say I am a fan of IS lenses (the 24-105 IS lens is one I use a lot on my 5D Classic) and I would hesitate to give that up with the 17-55 because of the low light advantages of IS.

Oh haha, yes it was for a regular house-hold lightswitch to an entryway. The salton sea is a pretty wild place, most of the structures still standing are completely ruined and decayed. It's a pretty intense place to say the least.

I used window light (nice bright day) plus a single remote Metz flash with straw gel at 1/8th power to the right bounced off a wall. I put in to Capture One Pro (way better than LR), used one of my presets, tweaked a tad and output as jpeg.

I'd agree that the shots are quite dim and lack contrast and with a bit too warm color. It looks like they were taken at dusk. If they don't appear that way on your system, have you calibrated your monitor? That is a good first step, and paying attention to the fact that monitors out of the box are virtually guaranteed to be too bright for photo editing.
A good test is to find a reliable printer to print some test prints and see how they compare to your monitor view.

I noticed a lot of people talk about 'getting a good one', is there that much variation between lenses? I thought the point of the professional 'L' series was unsurpassed quality etc.
If you buy one brand new and it doesn't seem sharp enough what can you do? Send it back to Canon, take it back to the shop to swap for another? How about if you buy one used and aren't happy with it - how much would it cost to send off to Canon for calibration? Will that cut it or is it the quality of the optics that varies?
tonylong

I seriously doubt that there are all that many "bad one" that get out there, but when they do, we hear about it:)!
All manufactured things will have some defect ship through. Manufacturers figure on that, with a defect rate of some percentage being considered "acceptable". A defect rate for, say, an inkjet printer manufacturer may be as high as 5%. I'd imagine that L lenses have a lower defect rate than that. But even if they had a defect rate of .5%, that would still mean that 1 out of 200 would go out the door defective. In a forum of many thousand members such as this one, I imagine that thousands of people have or have had the 24-70, so let's say just 2000 have bought this lens and at a defect rate of .5% that means that ten people will have gotten a defective lens. Those ten people will speak up and many people will become greatly disturbed:).
Now it is smart to pretty thoroughly test a new lens or camera before your in-store warranty runs out. If you become one of those people, you can quickly exchange it. If your store warranty runs out but you are still under the Canon warranty, then things can drag out a bit -- send it to Canon and they will check it out and fix it for free.

What "look" are you referring to? The look of natural light? The sharpness? You gotta be more specific.
FWIW, there is very little post-processing done on this photo.

Can’t explain it very well, but just the way it looks. It looks like it could be an insurance advertisement. There’s a certain depth to it in terms of color. Not sure what to say, but it looks like a perfect portrait.

I appreciate the compliment. To be plain, it's just good light, like I said before. A lot of emphasis is placed on gear--cameras, lenses, etc--especially on this forum, but none of that will do anything for you if you don't have good light.
This is just afternoon light coming through a big window on a partly cloudy day. It gives you really nice, smooth tonality, you don't have sharp shadows, and I even got lucky with the catchlights.
Having a FF camera + a fast zoom doesn't hurt, since it allowed me to shoot shallow DOF without supplementary light, but I could've done the same thing with, say, an XTi and a 50mm lens.
The 24-70 is a great lens, don't get me wrong... but a good image rarely has a whole lot to do with the equipment used.

I believe what your seeing is the flash or ambient light is off camera coming from the left, then back up with your 50mm (this was shot at 70mm I looked in the exif data) and a shallow depth of field and you would have this shot.

No, I run a small site that features hundreds of producers yacking on camera about their work, some video tours around studios etc. I set up features for a few magazines and do a fair amount of magazine features photography. I also have a day job but that's another story :)

You know I had the exact experience. I had a copy of the brick that was acceptable, but not exceptional. Wound up selling it and buying a 24L (which was awesome) but I missed the usable range of this lens so much I turned around and sold the 24L after a month (great timing too because the 24L II was announced shortly there-after ;))
My second copy of the brick I didn't expect to be any different, but boy was I surprised with just HOW much better it was!
It's just been excellent on every camera I use it on. Period. (For the record, I had a UV copy, now I have a UW)
