It's been cropped slightly (see attachment), and I was about 2ft away from it. It was at the end of a falconry display and the falconer was standing there letting people take pictures of it.

I'm very very impressed with the 24-70. Blindingly sharp.

I am so sad, i look at my 24-70 and i feel it is looks like a disabled.
Still the filter is stuck on the lens after the dropping few months ago and i didn't take it to the service for some reasons, i don't know what to do, i can use it now as it is but i can't attach any filter on it and the lens cap is not holding on that filter so it is looks like unprotected as well, i love this lens so Damn crazy and really i feel sad i don't use it for a while, i even took it with me in my trip even i never use it, it is my first L anyway.

When i was in Paris and Geneva my main lenses were: 10-22, 16-35, 24-70.
Many will advice you to go with 10-22 and 24-105 if you want to take few lenses and travel light, if more than o 1.6x start with 10mm [canon 10-22, sigma 10-20] and it is up to you if you want to stop on 70mm or 105mm or 200mm, if you want to stop at 70mm then get 10-22 and 24-70, if you want 105 then instead of 24-70 get 24-105, if you want 200mm then get 10-22, 24-70, and 70-200, i can recommend you to get 17-55 which is great but then which lens from 55mm you want? 24-70 and 24-105 covering focal length on 17-55 from 24 to 55 which should be another lens, so think of few lenses which can cover most focal length from say 10 or even 17 up to 100 or 200mm.
When i was in Scotland i was using 5D and 16-35L and 24-105L only [i used 70-200 once but not main or necesary lens, and my 100-400 never left my bag].

regarding the f2.8 and f4..how much difference is there in image quality or lens quality between the 24-105L f4 or any other lens in the same spectrum but f2.8

what would u recommend fo rinterior shots of churches in rome or castles where low light makes it good to hav a good lens.

TMR Design
28th of September 2007 (Fri), 16:33
Unless you must have a zoom I would consider the 24mm f/1.4L or the 35mm f/1.4L. There's nothing like a fast prime for low light.

check those primes which have f2 or f1.8 and lower, 50 1.4 will be my choice, if you want to go wider then choose 35 or 24.
I uploaded some photos taken from inside Notredam church in Paris using my 10-22 on my 350D or 16-35 on my 30D, i was using ISO1600 & 3200 most of the time even at f2.8 or 3.5[on 10-22].

I just bought this baby 3 days ago and ,for that money, i'm a bit disapointed because of the sharpness. Above f4 it seems to be ok, but below...i'm not so happy. And the thing is that i bought it cause i need it to shoot in low light conditions. That's why i'm not so happy with f4 and above.

The DOF of this lens wide open is very shallow (depending on distance to subject and focal length)..........

Examples (Using a 30D 1.6x crop)

2.8 @ 50mm and 5 ft from subject
near 4.85 ft
far 5.16 ft
total 0.23 ft
in front of subject 0.15 ft
behind subject 0.16 ft

2.8 @ 50mm and 10 ft from subject
near 9.39 ft
far 10.7 ft
total 1.29 ft
in front of subject 0.61 ft
behind subject 0.69 ft

2.8 @ 50mm and 20ft from subject
near 17.7 ft
far 23 ft
total 5.9 ft
in front of subject 2.3 ft
behind subject 2.99 ft

2.8 @ 24mm and 10 ft from subject
near 7.8 ft
far 13.9 ft
total 6.13 ft
in front of subject 2.2 ft
behind subject 3.93 ft

This leads lots of people IMO to think its soft or misfocusing. Maybe you knew this already, I just offered this as a possible cause.

You can find the online DOF calculator HERE (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html) or if you have a Palm OS device you can use THIS ONE (http://www.dofmaster.com/custom3.html)(I have this one and its helped me alot)

Hope this helps ya, if not you then maybe others ;)

Thanks anyway for the effort.

I compared my results with ones from a friend's copy, and it's ok.
I think it was just me, dreaming for a prime lens sharpness on a zoom.
Anyway, for 1200$ i think it could be better @f2.8...
But i'm starting to like it, cause it's making my work a lot more easyer :)

I think you're absolutely right on that, Franko. I use my 24-70 at f/2.8 all the time when I take pictures of my son indoors due to rather poor lighting. And of course my son never stays put and moves around constantly. When he moves back and forth a little bit, I get some soft images. And when he moves quite a bit, then I'm way OOO. I also have a 30D and I've tried Al Servo mode in similar situations, but my results weren't that good.

A calculator? Or an actual program? Details?

It's a java soft for cell phones. You enter the f number, focal lenght and the distance you are focusing at and it gives you details about your dof :)

You can download it from here: http://www.curved-light.net/software/

There was a reddish tone in some of them, especially in the close ups.
Were these taken late afternoon? Or was it the reflections off the red painted boards?
Great shots btw.

In one shot it's definitely the red paint reflecting. I reduced saturation in the orange and red channels in some shots to give the skin a more natural tone, but wasn't sure if I was successful. Oh well. I was bored at work and was just going over some shots I took of our cadets during their ROTC weekend training event. ;)

I'll add this one to the archive. Even on a crop body, I was able to get my daughter and the kite in the shot. I've had this lens for awhile now and it's pretty much still glued to the body. Primes are jealous.

Why do you need IS from 24-70mm anyways??? Yes it's a big heavy lens but you get used to it and hand holding it is easy.

IS would be great for this lens. Not essential, but great. Shot this with my 40d and 24-70 at 1250 ISO. If I had IS I might have been able to shoot it at a lower iso. I also shoot interiors. That's where I could really use IS. Yes, I use a tripod and that works great, but there are times when it would be nice to take some off-the-cuff shots of furnishings and not have to setup. First is the full shot of my cat. Second is a 100% crop--and the compression hurts the image a bit of course.

Gospastic - Did you notice the shadow at the bottom of the photo? It's usually caused by using the on camera flash with the lens hood on. Try removing the lens hood or using a hot shoe flash and see if that removes the shadow. It's a big lens, and the hood easily gets in the way.

Now THAT's sharp.

Most lenses can be shown to be that sharp when we're viewing a shot downsized like that, especially taking into consideration the prospect of additional PPing. The deal with the 24-70 is the colour and contrast.. it definitely gives more 'pop' than a similarly sharp lens, the 17-55.

Some photos I took during the weekend in Muriwai Beach in New Zealand. These birds are called Gannet, and they flew all the way over from Australia.

UNBELIEVABLE !!! -- Even on a crop body, who would think the 70mm long end would get these pics. And without IS, you definitely have a pretty steady hand. It's pretty tough to hold a brick steady. Great examples of what a nice piece of glass in the right hands can do.;)
