Had to lug around the brick on my 5Dmkii on my honeymoon. Borrowed it for a friend. Even though it was heavy it took care of everything for me.

Tareq,
this one is my favorite... the dynamic range appears greater - more pop. Faster Shutter w/ reduced flash output?
What combination of camera and lens capture this beautiful work?

Thank you very much!
This shot was done using my Profoto Pro Head [the power was almost ran out and i turned it off to use 580EXII], i remember i used a shuuter speed around 1/125-1/200, i have to check this shot exif to be sure, and i think i also reduced the light output to save power battery but it was too late.

I used 1Ds MarkIII as camera, and the thread is 24-70 so this is the lens used, too bad i was planning to shoot him with my Hasselblad but that day i was in hurry to meet him so i dropped Hassy by mistake and it has an issue which i can see on the shot [some kind of cracked/damaged filter or mirror].

Nice shot, Chris!

I've had this lens for four days now, and it's really beginning to grow on me. I briefly took it off the 50D to mount my 50mm 1.4 today (my up-until-now runaway favorite lens), but ended up switching right back to the 24-70. :)

I'm one of the few people that don't care about having IS in a lens like this. Long tele lenses sure, but not mid-range stuff like this :)

I'm sure this is still my most used lens for regular work. It truly is versatile.

Properly more heavier and costs more too. IQ and AF may be the same unless they are improving the optics and quality control. Hmm.....I am about to send mine in to Canon for back focused issue. Bought new too with UY code.

Correct, if you can't get motion stopping shots with a lens like this without IS, one should stay away from the 85L and 135L as well...:) IS only stops your camera motion, not the motions from your subjects. So what if you can shoot at 1/10 second shutter speed at the long end when you can't even freeze your subject's movements without 1/200s.

Just my opinion, I couldn't care less about IS on this lens.
I know when I use it, my shots just come out great.
It inspires confidence and has never failed me.
Unless they make the optics better somehow, you can keep the bigger, heavier IS version of this lens if they ever decide to make it.
Get the 24-105 if you want IS. Leave my perfect brick alone, thank you. :p

I'm biased from what I experienced going from the 70-200 to the 70-200 II. Then again, I wouldn't pay a $1k premium over my current 24-70 as it is sharper than my 70-200 MKI was. However, I'm a shaky handed coffee drinker so I could use IS even when shooting with a 24L on a tripod

Bob, perhaps it's time to invest in a cable release? ;)

One thing I really like about the 24-70L is that (when you've got a good working solid copy) it is just a wonderfully consistent lens. It just works. All the time. I love working with my fast L primes for my own enjoyment and some special purpose jobs or low light events, but when I NEED to make sure the shot will be right on the money. The 24-70L and 70-200 f/2.8L are my go-to lenses.

It may weigh a ton, but that's why I work out ;). I'll never hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone.

Almost 99% of my 24-70L are coming out amazing, no IS at all, and i am sure if there is IS in this lens it will not change the fact that i can get great images with or without IS for standard mid range lenses, even with 24-105 sometimes i turn off IS and i don't see any difference unless i intentionally shot at 1/10 and shake my hand, but with the subject moving, even at 1/200 with IS on i can't get sharp results of it.

GMCPhotographics
30th of November 2010 (Tue), 08:38
Everyone's shooting needs are different. I have no exception to having an IS unit, but it's an extra expense to what will be an expensive replacement lens. Plus the posibility of it being even heavier that the current brick isn't really favourable. In terms of IQ, sure there's a little room for improvement but mine is already sharp enough wide open for my 5DII.

The 24-70L is fantastic for studio work as I only shoot this lens from f4-f11. If i am shooting up to f4, the primes take over the work. Besides from that, the lens is fantastic!

Bob, perhaps it's time to invest in a cable release? ;)

It may weigh a ton, but that's why I work out ;). I'll never hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone.

I am considering this lens to compliment my 16-35mm and 70-200mm.
I own EF 50mm f/1.4 and I am using 50d, so the gap is actually 56-112.
Do you find it useful on crop? Are the colours similar to EF 16-35mm f/2.8L or better, more like EF 70-200mm f/2.8L?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I wouldn't really want to take a landscape pic with this on a crop.

on a crop it's effectively 38-112mm, but before I got my 5D II, I was using this lens just fine on a 50D.

I own the 50D and the Canon 50mm f/1.4 as well. Over the past 9 months, the 50mm lens has been my go-to lens (before Oct. I was using the 50mm f/1.8 ). With that said, I purchased the 24-70 several weeks ago and its image quality, versatility, and build (read: focusing) have kept my 50mm in the bag.

I don't know how the colors compare to the 16-35mm or the 70-200mm f/2.8, but I can tell you that saturation is very good. This image is SOOC, shot through a high-rise window:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4147/5202631879_4cdc7078fa_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27635537@N02/5202631879/)

Furthermore, the focal length has not been a bother on the APS-C sensor, yet. But then again, I'm not a dedicated landscape photographer, and I do intend to change to a FF sensor within a year. I think, given your other lenses, this would fit your needs very nicely.

Why? It's already complicated enough with it's reverse zooming mechanism, which I think is a really good design.

I really wish that you and we [including me] look for something different than adding some more features on old lenses that are good enough, for me having IS on 24-70 will never making me to replace it, i didn't replace 100 macro for IS, i didn't replace 70-200 because mkII, so why not thinking about different things than adding IS or producing MKII of old lenses, for me i will always think to buy 24-100 f2.8 over 24-70 f2.8 IS, or if that 24-105 IS became 20-150 f2.8 even without IS, i never complaint about needing IS on 24-70, even i never feel happy that i have IS on 24-105, i even don't know if that IS really did something for it, i try not to shoot at 1/20 or slower even if i have powerful IS, but i know people want anything to be added to current lenses to believe it will enhance their photos, and i can't stop them to wish whatever they want but i really don't want that 24-70 to have IS, then more weight and more money and maybe not many can afford it.

I am pretty sure that many of the crop shooters don't own or will ever own the 17-55 IS :p My first DSLR kit was a 40D and 17-85 IS USM then upgraded the kit lens to the 24-70L and had that lens on the 40D for a year before upgrading to FF. I loved the 24-70/40D combo and found it extremely useful for portraits and certain landscape shots if I wanted go wider I have a 10-20mm lens for that :p
I totally agree with mr Tareq. Sometimes IS is a bit overvalued.

And the funny thing is that i watch this thread and find out how amazing this lens can do, even that 24-105 shots don't appealing me as much as this lens, so how come that Is on 24-105 didn't give that much difference then? Also the nice shots here making me to ask who did complain that they want IS to have better shot? maybe i didn't read the entire posts in this thread but all what i heard as an issue with this Brick is the focus problem [either back focus or front focus] calling the lens as a bad copy.

If it's front focus or back focus, then use the Microfocus to adjust it to fit the body, mine is adjusted at +3, my 85L at +1 but the 24mm series one that I had ( and it was a very good one) was +12, before I adjusted it, I was scratching my head (I find wide angles confusing to judge the focus some days) but I played with it and at +12 it really was right on. Before I had a camera with Micro Focus adjustment, I was sending lenses and one body in to Canon to have them tweaked to perfection. With MA, I had everything dialed in the day I got the camera.

I haven't used the 24-105 f4 but the fact it is a f4 lens and I often need to shoot at f2.8 to separate the subject from the background at wider FL and I know f4 is often not enough after have used the EF-S 17-85 IS. I am not trying to offend anyone here but I believe those whom would find IS on the brick useful are those who are older with shaky hands.

Well other than the IS hype there are also a few in here who complain about the focusing issues with the brick. I really don't know if mine has the same issue because I haven't spent time testing it and I haven't had to do a 100% crop on any of my shots so far. If I ever need to crop that much then it means I need a longer lens. I consider it waste of time to check at which focal lengths my copy back- or front-focuses because I am satisfied with the shots I have got so far.

I heard it has this so called focusing anomaly or whatever which means it could front focus and back focus at different FL but as I said I have got sharp images without AF adjustments at all focal lengths probably because I haven't had to extensively crop photos taken with that lens.

Jannie
14th of December 2010 (Tue), 01:52
I wouldn't be suppressed if I have taken 10,000 frames with my 24-70 and have never noticed anything change at different focal lengths and I use that lens at f2.8 quite often. Actually the only lens I've owned that had issues that couldn't be readily fixed was the 24-105 which distorted too much when shooting wider than 35mm on my old 5D. But most of the L lenses that I have owned could at times seem just a tiny bit less crisp when stopped down all the way. Nothing horrible to stop menfrommdoing it if I really needed the depth of field but I don't normally go there.

I changed the sharpness in "User Def 1" within the Camera settings to 6 instead of 3. At default I just couldn't get the detail back in post. Also for some reason my PC is having issues converting really big 18mp images so I also changed the output size to Medium/fine.

I've just rebuilt my PC and I've gone from PS4 to PS5 (dont know if they've changed anything in ver.5), also I did some reading up on the best reduction settings to use in Photoshop! So for now I'll tackle the sharpness of the images from the camera and when I'm happy with that I'll look into the issues I have working with the large files.

Going to pick up a new Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" next week as I'm not 100% happy with the monitor I have at present. Hopefully this will make it easyer working with these files...

Shoot RAW.

+1
It is waste of time and money to have a pro lens and a decent DSLR and still shooting jpeg :p

Well maybe your comp got a nasty virus or something because I have been processing 27mb RAW files on my old piece of crap with P4 2.4GHz 1Gig PC3200 DDR ATI 9550PRO 256MB without any problem   :o

No reason why your CPU should be chugging on those files with those specs!

Singaporeans.
Always busy.
Always having the urgency to travel fast.
Always trying to be as productive as ever.
The need for speed is in our blood.

Edit: No tripod, btw. This lens + 5D2 ungripped is a joy to handhold, and very very easy to drag the shutter without jitters.

Hmm, already running the following;

Intel i7 @4GHz on EX58-UD5 with 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8- Corsair 850w PSU - 2xWD-Rapters in Raid-0 - ATI Radeon HD 5770 - Dell 2407WFP

Anyway, before I tackle that one I need to get my camera set-up to produce images I like. Think its about time to have a dam good read of the Manual :D

Thanks for the help so far1

Xray

You should easily be able to handle the files with that computer.... I have a 4 year old quad-core Mac Pro that handles the 21mp 5DmkII and 18mp 7D files mostly ok, it's a little slow, but far from unbearable.

Wow! Considering Core2 Quad was first released in late 2006 or early 2007 you probably paid quite a lot for that Mac :O

^^ Love the Tron shot, great time to drag the shutter. I can't wait to do some of that kind of work. :-)

As for me, I couldn't resist snapping off a couple shots of the dog when I came across this carpet of yellow leaves blown down in our latest storm.

No sir. That was the benefit of working for Apple ;) I paid a little over a grand for the core system and then I have added upgrades over the years. Hehe. Too bad I'm not there anymore.

Absolutely not. The 50 L you get for the shallow dof. You cannot achieve those results with the Brick.

My 24-70 doesn't get my love much these days but it is just so versatile.
