Thanx for the compliments. Thats just the 580EX off camera to the right. No diffuser, just ambient light mix. Hand Held. I am glad you like them. I will post a few more that were ok. I will hopefully have some really creative ones after my semester project in two weeks.

Just recieved my 24-70 one hour ago & here is my first picture with it.Strong winds & the agapanthus was moving around a bit but i am happy with the result.
Bought the lens through B&H & paid for it Sunday night & recieved it here on the West Coast of Oz Friday 2pm.Save $500 through buying it in the states & that money is going towards a 85mm 1.8.

Thanx Robert,
I wish there was a little more sharpness in the bridge one. It was handheld. I think the Rebel XT is too small for my hands. I love the camera, but It seems like I am not as steady with it as I am my larger film body. I can't wait to get whatever replaces the 5D. I hope its worth the wait.

Heh, I was just wondering how many pics with this lens are hand-held and how many not. I looked at your bridge pic and said "tripod for sure". Shows you how good of a judge I am at such things, but also, kudos to you for capturing such a great "tripodesque" pic!

All of the ones I posted were all taken hand held. I only use a tripod when I absolutely have to. I am sure the bridge could have been much sharper had I used a tripod.
The thing that really helped the cat and the two of the girl from my class was flash. You can get perfectly sharp images if the shutter speed isn't too slow to get goghsting.
The bridge was as sharp as it it because there was enough light for a high shutter speed and it was taken a wider angle if I remember right.

I have the same "issue" as Tareq, I have this lens since last years and last night in this phot shoot I said....I'm just gonna shot the entire shoot with the 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8 guess what i did....I ended up using the 24-70...I'm addicted to it. I'm so used to it, that I know its sweet spot I know its behavior very well.....

I just eyed it based on that site. 24mm has the range of about 37mm & 70mm at 111mm.
Does that sound about right?
Pretty darn close.
38mm and 112mm respectively on 1.6 crop bodies.
31mm and 91mm on 1.3 crop bodies.
Hint: Multiply the focal length by the crop factor.

Mine just arrived last night. I shot a focus chart and it looks like it is performing well.
Here are a couple of test shots... but... you really have to look at the full versions to appreciate how sharp this lens really is.
No additional sharpening applied... shot in RAW on a 5D. RAW settings were default.... no adjustments applied other than a crop. The sharpness setting in ACR 4.0 is at 25 (default)
This is going to be afun lens to shoot with.
Nice work all.

I think that I managed to position myself so that I got reasonable light but it was my first shoot with my 1DmkIII so was nervous about how well I was running the camera. I knew that the horses and hounds would be coming this way so got in to what I hoped to be a good spot. I was trying out the Highlight Tone Priority mode and I think that it's great for situations like this. It seems to give a bit more freedom in Lightroom. Ideally I'd have used an ND grad but I used a little vignette in LR so it helped pull some detail out of the sky and that's it.
I was shooting wide open at f/2.8 and to be honest wasn't expecting the image to come out so well. I'm starting to find the 24-70L is giving me better results on the 1D than on the 5D, maybe it's down to the way the FL works out.
Anyway, thanks for the comments!

Here's a a pic and a crop from a winter snap in the Pacific Northwest, partially freezing the Multnomah Falls.
Taken in the late afternoon, so everything was in shadow, but the 5D with the 24-70 allowed me to bring up some luminance and color but at the same time keep some detail in the ice:

Which camera, Mike?
The thread is about the 24-70 f/2.8 lens, which, with a constant 2.8 aperture, is in the fastest class for a zoom lens, and so gives you a speed advantage when hand-holding.
A lens that has an additional advantage over this lens for crop cameras is the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS, because it has IS in addition to f/2.8. This lens has yielded some great results using the combination of 2.8 and IS when hand-held.
So, shooting hand-held can get great shots from the 24-70, but, if you're using a crop camera and shooting in low light, an alternative to consider would be the 17-55.
They're both great lenses with great IQ. The 24-70 has the edge with its L build. It may or may not have a bit better IQ -- I haven't done any real testing, but I would say that the 17-55 gives nothing that I've seen to really complain about. For me, though, when I use the 24-70 it's with a 5D and normally on a tripod. The combination seems to scoop up that wide angle and spill it out on an image!

Lol, yah sorry meant lens. Guess I am a bigger newb then thought...ha. Yah I was looking at the 17-55 because the IS looked really attractive to me. I have a pretty steady hand and the L glass really was not that much more in price so I went with the L. I think I made the right choice, well I hope I did :D.
Anyway its just to start out with. Before the summer is finished I want to pick up something on the low range maybe Canon's 10-22, and then I def want to pick up a 70-200 f/2.8 with IS. I assume the IS will be really important on a big telephoto. Lot of money for a hobby, good thing I still live at home!

On my 30D 65mm F2.8 1/250sec ISO 250. Minor USM applied. Unlike my 70-200mm F4IS L which I fell instantly in love with, I find the brick needs more time for me to get acquainted with it.
