There are many great shots in here, I debated long and hard between the 24-70 and the 17-55 and really both produce great results. While the L-snob in me pained for the 24-70 and I really would have preferred the build from it, I chose simply based on the focal length. I had to remind myself that many of the images I loved in here were shot on a FF or 1.3 crop camera. Now, down the road maybe I chose wrong, but for now I'm happy with my choice

That's the first time I've heard about bad copies of this lens. Odd. If you're FF, I'd highly recommend this lens. I almost never want/need to take it off.

On one of them, you are paying for the IS and not the image quality. I'm not saying that it isn't a great lens, i've seen damn good photography with it but it does not have the same IQ as the 24-70. If you shot both, you'd see the difference.

I used to think the same thing, then I realized that a 24-70L and a 10-20 Sigma is going to be a killer combo.

I believe this is true as well. After having owned the 24-70L, 17-55 IS and the 24-105L, I definitely think the IS makes a difference in IQ. That's why the 24-105L went back even though I sometimes still struggle with handshake. I just have to make up for it in other ways.

Not sure why I'm posting this as this is definitely NOT one of my favorite images with this lens. I just recently got it back again and am trying to learn more about my 430EX. I'm clearly in the dark (ha, ha ). Clearly underexposed and tried to make up for it in PP. My WB is off as well.

Your Exif data isn't viewable, and since you've touched it up in PP it's hard to say what happened!

How was your white balance set? If it was set to Auto and you were mixing your flash with indoor lighting it might explain your WB problem. As far as being underexposed, we would need to see your settings to guess at that as well, including whether you used any flash exposure compensation.

If you could post the original untouched image with exif attached or you supplying your settings, it could help us to give you feedback!

Looks like you bounced the ceiling. I've been experimenting with the 430 myself lately too. What I find myself liking is the following (for head shots and such): set your camera (in custom functions) to use 1/250th for flash, turn on the "H>>" on your flash (need that setting for 1/250th), set flash head to 60 degrees and set exposure on the flash +2/3. (Av mode of course)

I'm a freakin noob with the flash stuff so far, but since you like the eyes, I find the former settings mentioned to my liking. Try it!

Now all you pro's can bash me

Can't hurt. I'll give it a try next time. It was bounced off the ceiling and I was in the kids bathroom. I'm having difficulty exposing properly I think because I'm thrown off by my new 40D and am just having a heck of a time with my flash. I also really need to start (and keep) shooting in RAW. Thanks for the help. Hmmm... wonder where my exif went. I'm pretty sure I didn't use NeatImage for this one.

Anyway, here's another I took today with the pop-up as fill (bad habit, I know). I just can't resist his eyes and perfect skin. Poor kid must be so sick of the camera. His older brother won't even let me near him with the camera anymore.

On a side note, I went through this gallery yesterday to fuel my excitement. I have a 24-70 on the way and I'm stoked - swapped my recently acquired 17-55 for it. IQ I find there's no comparison between the two - I rented a 24-70 last weekend which cemeted my decison to switch. The 17-55 is a better range if you're rocking only one lens, but I have a stellar copy of the 17-40 for my wide and the images from it were also better than the 17-55 to my eyes. The 24-70 definitely has incredible colors, contrast, sharpness, and pop. can't wait for mine to get here!

We shot a bodybuilding show this weekend. I like the way this one turned out. The 24-70 was used in the studio all night...I worked the zoom to death. The images coming from the raw files need no sharpening... the lens is wicked sharp!!! LOVE IT!

Some adjustments in Photoshop CS3. B&W conversion and curves adjustment. 3 AB's ...one large softbox to his left, one overhead on a boom and one with an umbrella above and behind me... black background.

Credit goes to Steve and Kristy... for the lights and the pose... I justed pushed the button. ;)

Let me know what you think...

May I? not so good enough but i like it as it is more popping to me.

I like where you are headed with it... but... look at the top of his hand... you lost any subtle detail. Maybe a version with 1/2 the boost?

That works for me! I really like the "POP" the image has. Thanks for the ideas. :) Looking back...I should have reflected more light back to the back of his head. We were pressed for time. I think we ran 60 people through the studio... not much time to make many adjustments.

Thanks again for the edit.

Snow at 60F?
we have the minimum temp around 50F once within 6-10 years and we never got snow, we never got 32F even or below.
Nice shots anyway.

not only that i starting shooting in raw and i gotta say i have no clue what i am doing lol! might go back to auto settings until i actually suss the lense out!

i'll post the best pic from the day when i get home tonight...

if there is one thing i am obsessive about it is low light performance. i am always testing and pushing the limits of what i can do. if a lens cannot perform in low light it generally doesn't interest me. that being said i tested the 24-70 tonight at our favorite restaurant. iso 1600, f/2.8, 1/40 for the first two, and iso 3200, f/2.8, 1/80 for the next two. that is pretty dark. bars and night clubs are usually only about a stop less light. the 24-70 performed wonderfully, great focus and clarity (no sharpening) in crappy conditions. oh and the 5D helped  i am amazed by this lens.

I was out and about shooting with my 50mm 1.4 for today, and I bumped into a fellow photog (a complete stranger mind you) with several fantastic lenses. He had the 24-70 and I asked to borrow it to fire a few frames, and boy, I must say...

I am absolutely impressed with this lens. Extremely impressed.

Great that this lens is doing the job that it should be.
I am happy with this lens and i do the best thing in my life to buy this as my first L, and because this lens i got more Ls.
Just i use it indoors only these days because i can't remove the filter on it since about 7 or months ago, and i don't want to send it to canon service as they don't help much and i will miss my lens, and i didn't find anyway yet to remove that suck sticky broken filter.

It was a tough call. The Sears Tower goes so much higher than what's shown in that photo--especially its antennas--that including all of it would've interfered with the composition I was trying to frame.

I use this lens quite a bit, especially on my 1DmkII. It's a lot of fun and a really useful range of FLs. I don't think I have a tack-sharp copy personally, but its good enough to use certainly. I just have to do a bit of USM afterwards. I've always been happy with it though.
