Wow, how cool! What a little doll she is! I hope she's not self-conscious about it and sees it as a way to be totally unique.

She's cool about until people start flipping out while looking straight into her eyeballs. Then she gets a little gun-shy. When she was born the doctors said her eye colors would change....but she's almost 7 and they're still the same.

Did you know that Kate Bosworth also has a brown and a blue eye? I think it's beautiful and very special.

USM?

The acronymical part of my brain is failing me at the moment....

In this case it means Unsharp Mask, probably in Photoshop. It can also refer to the Ultra-Sonic Motor in Canon Lenses. There are lots more here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=261117).

Yeah..the only USM I knew about was the focus motor of USM lenses.

I just love this lens to pieces. It would be higly impractical to try and shoot something like a car show with prime lenses. One second you need wide-angle...the next you need telephoto. This lens does it all....and does it good.

Dude, you could probably be a stock-photography millionaire if you hit it hard. That's not any kind of a smart-aleck remark. I just think you shoot good stuff that would sell quickly as stock. Maybe I'm revealing my ignorance of the 'stock-photos' world.....don't know. (well...maybe the "millionaire" part was a bit sarcastic but all in fun)

If it was handheld at 1/100th then it's probably just blurred. You didn't use flash, did you? You might also enable "mirror lock-up" in your custom functions when in low light. Much easier just to use more light and bump up the shutter speed though.

Also, "autofocus" isn't always as precise as it should be. You might retry the exact same shot but instead, use manual focus. It would be good if you could get a razor-sharp shot of the above scene, but you may not. My own 24-70 shoots razor-sharp in most lighting conditions but seems a smidge soft in certain lower-light conditions. And that may just be a matter of AF not being able to zero in at lower light levels. I'm still learning this stuff myself. Does the learning ever stop?....heh heh.

The skateboard shot is hilarious. It would probably be a great candidate to be photoshopped into a "Norman Rockwell". In case you don't know who he is (RIP) you've seen his work before...just do a Google image search on "Norman Rockwell".

But I also agree with ieatstars: The basketball shot is pretty amazing.
Granted, it's not like it's anything that somebody with some spare time couldn't photoshop together but it's still an attention grabber when you're looking at regular "single-shot" photos. At least you took the time and trouble to set up a tripod and put some effort into the captures. Kudos for that.

Oh, I had no idea you meant those. The STi, and photos edited like it, are an example of what someone else said above -- perfectly good pics that you get carried away with in PS. I know I used alien skin and messed with the contrast quite a bit on that one.

So is this the version that came out in 2002 or is there a version that has IS on it?

Images are blisteringly sharp and I was looking for a replacement for my ever softening 17-85.

Thanks

Nope. No IS as of now. If Canon did have a 24-70mm 2.8 IS L then that would be a killer lens. It would probably kill sales on the 24-105 and idt they would do that.

The first shot with a 5D at f/9 and the second was shot with an Elan 7e on Fuji Superia 400 film and converted to b/w in CS3. Don't remember the aperture for that one. I shot it last fall.

Just about convinces. I have the 17-85 now, and it seems to be getting soft. I think its due to the fact that the 20d with the grips puts a lot of strain on the front of the lens when its sitting on a flat surface, and so the front of the lens can actually be wiggled. Results softer photos, and some focus issues.
Sooo, after reading the issues with focus on this lens, if I buy it from B&H or Abes, and there is a problem, do you just send it to Canon for warranty service?
There is one local shop with it in stock, but they want $100 more. Better to spend the $100 to try it out in person first to check the focus?

Thanks

Wiggly lens aside, I think your money would be more wisely spent upgrading your body. Used 30D's are getting cheap. If you could afford a used 40D or 5D, even better. Moving my 24-70L from a 10D to a 30D made a big difference.....so it's quite possible that you won't see the full potential of the lenses you have now without more 'horsepower' behind them in the form of a newer body. I'm not shooting down the 20D, it's a great camera. Heck, I still think my 10D is a great camera, but limited. I'm planning on moving up to a 1Ds series very soon. (I practice what I preach.......heh heh)

So, you might think about renting a different body and trying your lenses out with that before selling any of your glass.

Yeah the 20d and the 30d are essentially the same cameras, and if it were only between the two cameras then the answer to your question would be "it probably wouldn't". But there's another important variable in the mix: the photographer. The 30D has enhancements over the 20D that I feel allow the photographer a little more freedom or room to do his/her thing. One of the greatest being the 'spot metering' and yes I use it. Sure they've got the same processor and same sensor. I'm not so sure they've got the same shutter. I really don't know that one. The 30D shares more similarities with the 5D than does the 20D, such as AF algorithms, color and white balance processing.

But to get back to your point, yeah it would probably be a poor choice to go from a 20D to a 30D in the context of this discussion (improved lens performance)....but it would be an improvement nevertheless. Part of it being enhanced functions, part of it possibly being psychological.

seems to me that if the lens is damaged/faulty as described, replacing the body will not target the source of the problem...

Nice shot. The snowflakes frozen in the air on either side of your friend is interesting. Matrix snowflakes? It seems like you should have more bokeh at 70mm and f/2.8......but perhaps that's just the difference between a FF 5D and a cropped body.

I knew I botched my response after I hit the send button.
Everybody line up for your chance to flog Spazz. I deserve it...heh heh.

I based my statements on his opening comments: "Just about convinces". I could see him rushing out to trade in the 17-85 for the 24-70 or pretty much giving away the 17-85 thinking it was bad....and it might be. It might also be perfectly fine. Getting the 24-70 is a given. That simply must happen.....that is if you like the images in this thread. But for a few dollars he could rent a better body and see if the problems are replicated. (Don't rent a 30D...NOOOOOOOO!) For all I know kepople could be a master photographer and know exactly what he/she is talking about. But I've seen strange, unexplainable things and sometimes they aren't easily repeated.

Thanks. Not sure what you mean by 'matrix' snow flakes, but they are real if that's what you're asking!? Not sure, i'd say there's a decent amount of bokeh there though!

Remember the bullets that stopped in mid-air just in front of "Neo", as if all vertically stacked in front of him? Never mind, it was a dumb comment.

Yeah there's a decent amount of bokeh...it just seemed to me there would be more with the aperture wide open. Maybe because it was an overcast day?

...I don't think weather has too much to do with the amount of bokeh you can get from f/2.8.

I think the fact that he was using a FF would mean that there would be even more bokeh then if he was using a crop.

Thanks for the responses...however, I think the question still was not answered.
If I buy local I can see it in person, but cant really prove anything until I shoot it for a while. Is it really worth $100 to buy it local?
So with a B&H purchase, can you just send it to Canon for warranty service or do you have to go back and fourth with B&H if you get a junker?

A new camera body is coming, but not until the 40D is replaced, or pull the trigger on a 5D. In the mean time, I have a 70-200 2.8 and so with this I will have a 2.8 range from 24-200... that sounds good to me...

great photo in Prague BTW.

He was grazing at the side of the road, not more than 25 feet from the pavement. We stopped the truck and I got out, cautiously approaching until I was about 15-20 feet away. He seemed rather oblivious of everyone stopping to gawk at him, tho I was the only one brave (or stupid) enough to get out of the vehicle. :D Jasper is a huge tourist trap, so I suspect much of the wildlife has become accustomed to the people that pass through.

Concerning the "blacks"....I fixed the problem. It was heavy on contrast. I like the contrasty look but cutting it back a bit helped this set. (not on the above posted image - but on my current batch of exports.)
