Yesterday afternoon UPS dropped off the new MT-24EX I ordered from B&H. Earlier in the day I bought another orchid to help welcome the new flash unit.
The flash came packaged in a nice dedicated Canon carrying case. And the whole kit and kaboodle (control unit, cables, two flash units and mounting ring) is much lighter than I had anticipated. Lighter is good! It's a neat piece of gear. I haven't really given the manual more than a glance. And I kind of messed up last night by taking everything at ISO 400 when I should have been using ISO 100. But even here in the very early part of the learning curve (and with the wrong ISO) I am amazed at what this flash, mounted on the end of an EF 100 macro, can do. This is the most fun since I got the 5D! I must have shot 150 photos last night and this morning. Given that I've got to work to pay for this little bugger I've only had the chance to process a few images this AM. Hopefully I will improve with this setup. Shots one and two are uncropped.
f/22; 1/200s; ISO 400 (woops).

And, yes, it can be used for portraits too. That's as long as you don't mind two highlights in each eye.
