I am going to buy a camera for my son and have narrowed it down to, more or less, the A610 or the A620. He has been to a camera shop and handled a few cameras and decided on the Canon.
My question is why is the A610, the cheaper camera, getting better reviews than the A620 ? Most things would point to the A620 being better but the reviews say otherwise.
Any help much appreciated.

Haven't seen many reviews on either, but I'd guess they're at least partly the result of the larger pixel size of the A610 which generally means less noise. I was leaning that way while compacts with a flip-out screen were still available (notice the new A models don't have this), but got a sale offer on the A620.

It would seem that the picture quality is similar and the differences would be hard to determine. However, given the significant difference in Pixel size, you would have more flexibility with cropping with the 620.
However, given the positive comments with both cameras, either choice I'm sure would be a great choice.

According to another recent post, the 620 just won an award for being the best compact camera.

The a620 is just an "evolution" of the a610, it's almost the same thing, except on the resolution.... From 5, to 7...
Besides that, both cameras are almost equal... They even have the same body.
I also considered both a610 and 620, but finally i bought the S2 (for the 12x and stuff)... But, i'd go for the 620, without a doubt. Unless 5mp suits you fine, then you should get the 610. But, they're both great great cameras ;)

Perhaps we're seeing different reviews. Most reviews, from customer reviews on amazon.com to web reviews to magazine reviews, rave about the A620. In the US, it has already been selected as the "editors pick" several times and has received at least one more substantial award (mentioned elsewhere in this forum). Here in Germany, this camera is gaining almost fanatical attention - two out of the three dealers visited recommended this specific camera and users comments are, to put it mildly, very positive.
To Jon, commenting earlier about not seeing many reviews, simply enter "Canon A620 review" into any search engine. To "SaNdMaN82," commenting about the evolution of these cameras, since both were released at the same time, there is little evidence to suggest either camera evolved from the other. Instead, it appears they were developed to fit specific voids in the "A" series line.
