How do you know when it's time to call yourself a "photographer" rather than a person that takes pictures? Or as I'm so commonly called "Camera Man"
What are the signs? When should I change my title?

Well, seeing the list of camera equipment you have, I would call you a photographer;) Seriously, I would think when you start charging for your services.

i'm curious as well... am I a photographer yet?? ;) .. just wondering.. I'm not sure if money has much to do with being a photographer.. some of the best here aren't monetarily driven.. look at Dimitri... if he's not a photographer I don't know what one is...

I guess we are all photographers on various levels of skills and experience.

How do you know whether you actually care? I guess you either care or you don't.

yeah, who care really, its just a word. Take pictures, enjoy yourself, there is no set definition to being a photographer.
I mean, if it makes you feel better I hearby forward the motion that you are in fact a photographer! Anyone want to second that motion?

Fade2 - You have hung around for 55+ posts so I reckon you are serious. Unfortunately you have fallen among a pack of folks who have a serious sense of humor (hows that for oxymoronism)
One of the ringleaders is of the feminine persuasion.
By your gear, I reckon you know how to use it and it shows signs of wear in places. If not it puts you into the 'collectors' catagory. You canot buy your way into being a photographer just acquiring gear (no offense).
If you can walk into a variety of photo opportunities and know what cam/lens/light/subject angle so-forth in a matter of seconds, then you might be a "photographer".
If you can get a well balanced/framed/well exposed image and feel confident about its printability, then you might be a photographer.
If you can deal with a whiney/can't-make-up-their-mind/cheap customer, and they give you a nice order anyway, then you might be a photographer.
If you stand out in the cold/rainey/blowy/just plain nasty weather to get that 'one' key shot (money or not), then.......
Hell, it's up to you - just be able to back it up in a pinch.
Come back and talk to me in a few years - when I ask you what you are, I'll know by your answer.
