I think the current moderator crew here is more than adequate. No need for more. I would like it I guess, but I think I lack the "people skills". I'm not one of those people that "has a way with words".

I like the mods we have now.. great crowd... I would like to take a peek at some of the conversations they have amongst themselves however. :D :D .. but be a mod? nah.. i'm way too much of a people pleaser. I'd compromise everybody to death   .. and I doubt I could ban anybody.. I have a hard enough time putting my nieces in time-out. I'm always telling them to give eachother hugs and getting out the cookie jar..

I think I'm somewhat deficient when it comes to political correctness so I'm not sure if I'd absolutely work. Of course if they want mods to take the attitude "yeah mate, go ahead, I thought it was funny" then I'm you man.

I'll second that. If asked, I surely will accept (since I spend most of my spare time here anyway and I ike the idea of doing something for help POTN grow up even more), but I doubt that I'll never be called, so I live happily without responsibilities :)

I should be a moderator since I've been banned once already. It's like how the former drug addicts make the best counselors. :D

I asked Jon the other day if he read a thread I thought was interesting. He said he didn't have time with his responsibilities as a moderator. He had to keep up with the groups he's accountable for. That made me think really hard about what it all means to be a moderator. I enjoy reading from every section. These guys & gals who keep us straight and answer everyone's questions are volunteers more than anything. But I do get a kick out of starting a thread or making a comment and a moderator comes in and helps out or straightens me out. They really do their jobs well.

Anyone who really wants to be a Mod probably isn't right to be a Mod. I suspect there are more important personal qualities required.

Which is why the majority of decisions are discussed between the moderators. The exceptions are spammers who are banned on sight.

Ronald S. Jr.
27th of May 2006 (Sat), 10:23
One question, Tommy. Do you guys just have a regular forum for yourselves where you make posts, or do you have like a live chat type thing so you can really "discuss" things in a timely manner? Also, are you limited to how soon you can post, like we are?

Just curious.

tommykjensen
27th of May 2006 (Sat), 10:26
We have a hidden forum for discussions. Sometimes I wish we (the mods ;-) ) were all on a closed live chat group for the quick decisions.

And we don't have the 30 second limit on posting.

Ronald S. Jr.
27th of May 2006 (Sat), 10:29
Seems like you guys should have a private live chat...seems as though it would be advantageous. You could all start one on any messenger program, no? I'm sure one of you could make up your own program, but in the mean time...

In this case it better to use the private forum as it also stores the posts and we have subforums for specific purposes.

Wow, never expected to have a lot of replies and even from the "generals" lol.

So what are the qualifications to be a moderator?

>You should be a professional photographer?
>You should have already published a book in photography?
>Should be years and years of POTN membership?
>The number of posts?
>Moderators are scouting for potential "future" moderators? (In what case to be scouted"? lol) - Sounds like the "Da Vinci Code" or "Matrix" - "You are the chosen one".

From what I know, almost everybody who is lurking here at POTN has a passion in photography - and I think that's the first quality. (So most of us are already qualified!!! wohoo!).

Oh well, I love to be a moderator here at POTN someday:D I don't have any special training in photography but I have the urge and fire lol. Years in regular point-and-shoot camera and 4 months with my G6:lol:

Wow, I'm pretty sure, panel of moderators for an interview will freak me out. Oh well, I'll grab my portfolio, hardbound with my best photo on the front page (hmmm preferably black and white or sephia) then spread the portfolio, then BAM! (architecture) BAM! (landscapes) BAM! (urban). Judges: Hmmmm.... Impressive... what do you think co-moderators? (I wish! haha!)

lakiluno
27th of May 2006 (Sat), 17:03
moderating has absolutely nothing to do with photography skills or whether you've written a book. Its all about attitude, commitment and generally being able to make sure the rules are followed, but not going over the line.

Will you be a moderator? I don't know. I fail to see why you want to be. In some communitys/forums, moderation is just a promotion for being a long standing member, but I would think that for a community this size it requires a lot of work, and really is a service to the community, not a reward for being a member for ages.

How does one become a moderator?

Hmm good question.

One thing is never to ask for it.

Contribute to the forum in a positive way.

Don't get into trouble with moderators or Pekka.

Then maybe, just maybe one day You could receive a PM from Pekka.

Leo

You have a good point Leo.

I totally agree with you that to be a moderator, it's nothing to do with skills or how many books that's already published. But I like to add... it should have "something to do with photography" - The passion, the urge, the fire, the love, the eagerness". A nation's president cannot run just with his knowledge and power "effectively". He/she should have the ability to connect to the people and needs - a passion to sacrifice to for the sake of goodwill. It's not only about being a president in relevance, in general per se.

In this case, who are qualified to be moderator? The moderators are the only people who can answer this;)

None of us can read every single post. Combined we cover a lot but very often we direct our attention to specific threads when reported by members via 82287. Without these reports some issues can take a while to be discovered if discovered at all.

Kid, it's about quality not quantity ... same as when you are out shooting ;) You can reach any posting level easily and quickly but whether anyone respects what you have to say is a very different matter. Forget about post count.

I think Claire would make a good Mod BTW, esp in the Glamour forum ... and a few great things about the Mods here is they are 'sensible', when they need to be, but not dull people. Each has a personality and each has a proven commitment to making this place a good community for everyone else.

I guess I'll just keep on posting, slowly and steadily :D

kid, it's about quality not quantity

Yet you have almost 6,500 posts in just over a year... :)

(don't worry...you do contribute with each post, so its OK)

Thanks for the nice comments suzy, I'll try and keep it up, but I'll probably end up slowly sinking into a state of non-thinking and lazyness :|

I think Claire would make a good Mod BTW, esp in the Glamour forum ...

I don't think Pekka would dare making me a Mod of the G&N... I'd be too busy trying to get people to post more male models! LOL ;)

Heh, I have been here over a year now and just past 500, and I visit everyday. I would contribute more often but two reasons I don't, the biggest being I am always so unsure if my words will come across clear and as intended, and two I don't like to repost the same thing 6 other people have already stated in a thread.

As for being a mod, oh hell no, I ran a board for 2 different guilds in EQ and 1 in WoW. It was alot of work taking care of 100-200 people, I wouldn't even think about doing it for a board of this size.

Well, one thing I noticed across several threads you have contributed to over there is that you come from a neutral (if one ever can be such!) perspective and seem to just want to encourage more posting and, very importantly, more diversity in posting and without discriminating against any interest.

If you look across the board at the magazines, Tv shows, etc that are available there are as many broad 'mens' as 'womens' on the racks or our screens, at least in the UK, and covering across the board from clothes and fashion and sports, etc., to quite specific interests, yet 99% of 'models' here at POTN are women and I guess nearly all are shot by men.

Anyone, especially a woman, who can encourage the idea that men CAN shoot men and so can women, and women can shoot women and so can men, and it all still be seen as glamour and nude, then that is good. Hell, the more diversity in shooter and subject the better. By populating the section with 'all sorts' shot by 'all sorts' we start to dismantle the apartheid that people see in what is 'acceptable' to post there.

I do wonder if the subject threads might sometimes need someone, or a group, to help shape its development. Mods don't do it. Sure, there is a lot to be said to just letting randomness shape things, ie whoever posts posts and that is it, but some discussion and practical encouragement for more diverse types of shooting can only help. It is a subtle distinction between encouragement and wanting to shape things your own way sometimes but a small group of people could take a lead in that subject area to encourage. As it is, for me at least, a number of subject areas just seem to drift semi aimlessly.

So, a bit of a ramble but I think you could encourage things in G&N really well if you wanted to. I don't even think Pekka needs to ask you ;-) but if he did need a Mod for the section then I would support it 110% ... which is probably the kiss of death ;-)

why dont you do it Condyk? I bet you'd do a great job..

as for me? I like the way the threads go.. no matter where. I just think its the nature of things, esp when youget a huge bunch of people, from around the world, all with different personalities posting thier viewes and comments.. its fun. And just as in normal conversations, the thread never ends where it started... its fun to me. I consider allot here a "Friend" even though we have never drank a beer together or (raised a pint) and look forward to your responses, comments and suggestions, and maybe at the first b i-annual POTN summit, we can all do just that, Meet, relax, shoot and have one hell of a HUGE toast to Pekka and the Mods who keep things running so smoothly.
Huh? Huh?

Well said Dave.

There is a core of POTN members who seem to me to do informal 'modding' - that is as you say, shaping and directing threads without formally acting. Not always related to 'seniority'. We all kow who they are... they contribute to the pleasant atmosphere and vibrancy of POTN.

But why aren't you out amongst the wilds of B'ham with your lenses on such a nice day - it is a Holday you know!

Well Claire has a keen interest in that area beyond just looking at naked girls   and always has some great ideas when issues are raised too. G&N just isn't my thing. I'll stick to Urban ... and when I next hit the road wildlife where putting a Gnu shot besides a Cheetah is never considered a problem. All are equally amazing in their own way ;)

I invited one couple to spend the holiday with our family of 5. We were to have some barbeque, potatoe salad, etc. Then it got a little out of hand. Now we have 16 people coming and I am desperate to get more meat for the grill. How do things always get away from me? So, condyk, enjoy your laziness today, I'm off the Sam's Club, if it's open. :(

Typed a few dissertations, myself, while putting my husband through law school. One Japanese man gave me a whoel pile of work, I couldn't understand about 50% of it, but I edited for him and he passed. I guess I don't miss those days, but it's nice to hear others have to suffer through that too. Just kidding. Good luck with your 5000 word writings. It's all worth it in the end.

Spot on ... and we've noticed ;-) Let's get rid of the 'wow, she's hot' comments. We can appreciate beauty in all it's diverse forms. As to CharlesU's shots well I appreciate them on the whole, despite them not really being my cuppa ... and I guess he knows which are stronger than others. But I also guess he appreciates being fed back honestly as you do, rather than a lot of the fawning 'fan boy' stuff he has got in the past.

I was a moderator on another board that was about the size of this one. What a lot of work! After about a year it got to be more work than it was worth and I resigned. Just treat other members with respect;) Ok, I'm not a moderator, don't believe me:D

Did you ever get a wishlist? :)

I'm not sure if I considered myself as a moderator but I used to handle once a month meetings, e-mail current events, or just plain gatherings for young architects back in west coast. Organizing is not really hard for me, I just need feedbacks. The hardest is when you have this gatherings and you see strange faces and you don't even have time to accomodate all of them.

Unfortunately, no! :( We did get free subscriptions to O magazine, though. Not bad considering it was a volunteer gig.
