I found this (original post included below) in a fairly old G1 thread and found this very interesting, but am wondering if it applies to the G2.
Trying to take pictures of my 10mo old is not the easiest thing with the G2 and I was thinking this might help.
I tried it inside the house (got home too late to go outside) and it just didn't seem to work. I was trying to focus on a shelf on the other side of the room, probably 20ish feet. None of the shots seemed nearly as sharp as puting it back into "Pan focus" mode. I was trying it at 7mm and also zooming in (I know, can't zoom in pan mode, that's why I never use it) but they just didn't seem as sharp as letting the camera do the autofocus or the 7mm pan mode.
Does this "trick" work for the G2? If so, what's the trick to the trick?

This speed "trick" is setting F-stop and focus distance so that you are in focus from a few feet to infinity, so the camera doesn't have to focus when you shoot. It is useful in street shooting in good light, where speed is crucial and your subject could be anywhere.
In film cameras it is easy - there is a depth of field scale that you use. You can use "Pan focus" in the G1, but that leaves you unable to set anything else....
In the G1, the trick is to set the camera to "Pan focus" mode (F5.6,hyperfocal distance), then switch to Av or M, then press "MF" to set the focus - is sets focus at the last distance it focused at (which was set in Pan mode, even without pressing shutter). Then set aperture to F5.6. You can now just shoot....camera will meter and then fire.(must set speed first if in M, of course, for even faster action).
Everything will be in focus, and the G1 will have no focus lag.
You can also just use "MF" to set focus three segments below infinity, which is where "Pan focus" sets it, and aperture on 5.6
