Here are a few pictures from the weekend (3 of around 90 or so; I've been lazy today with getting them processed). I'm interested in knowing how I'm doing with composition.

All of these were taken with a circular polorizer. The IR was taken with a tripod of course but the other 2 were handheld. I regret not getting the tripod out for the top photo as it would have allowed me to stop down the lens enough to get everthing in focus.

#1: nice landscape, but a little boring picture. Can't really put my finger on it; something is misssing
#2: I'm a sucker for symmetry. This would have been lovely when taken from the middle of the little pier.
#3: too detailed to make any sense. I know it's a river or something, because I have seen them before. Could have used a lot more of the surrounding.

On the second picture, I'm not a stickler for symmetry, but I would have created a stronger diagonal line by angling the dock across the picture. Then I would have lowered my vantage point so the dock almost reached the opposite shore visually.

Just my two cents.

In that first one...maybe taking a lower angle and focusing on the foreground instead would've made a more dramatic image.

Or setting your focus to infinity.

I'm no expert, just a novice. But I will give you my opinions on the photos because when I post photo's I'm not necessarily just looking for professional critiques, but people's opinion in general in addition to the more professional critiques. So, here goes...

1. The rule of thirds probably should have applied here so that the horizon of the grass field doesn't cut the picture in half. This is a hard one for me to get right as well. I suppose it just becomes habit after taking many pictures. Nice picture otherwise. You may have wanted to make the mountains in the BG your subject or the tree with the mountains as the background??? Only you truly know what the intended subject was supposed to be.

2. This is my favorite. It is a very crisp picture. As far as the symmetry goes, I would have done what either of the previous posters suggested - Centered the dock in the picture OR angled it so that the dock jutted out at an angle diagnally across the picture. Great shot though otherwise.

3. Doesn't do much for me. Maybe would look better in color. I think maybe backing up a bit to show more of the surroundings would have helped as stated previously.\

That's just my unproffessional opinion on your shots. Hope it helps. I'm finding that by taking lots of pictures and getting good feedback from this site, you can improve your shots tremendously and get an idea for the types of pictures that appeal to most people. So, Keep shooting and good luck!

Excellent advice guys. Thanks. I'll take this on board and hopefully learn from it.

And yeah, the waterfall would have been so much better if I could have gotten it from a distance. I'm really needing that wide angle lens for shots like that.
