I have been using PSP for years and I also have PS 7.1. I find PSP more user friendly and have not had to be bothered with the steep learning curve for using Photo Shop.
The latest version of PSP 8.01 has some really great new features including the Python scripting engine. This is like Adobe's actions on steroids.
I have been trying to find out if PSP8 works in 16 bit or, like PS, works in 8 bit and saves to 16. I use BreezeBrowser to convert from CRW to 16 bit tiff and am wondering if I should only convert to 8 bit tiff's and save some disk space if the results are going to be the same.
If anybody knows I would appreciate the information and advise.

Fred I can't help on your question sorry, but I do have one of my own, I have a friend who uses PS7 and talks about a thing call the 'history brush' I was wondering if PSP8 has something similar? I agree with you PSP8 is a lot easier to learn and a whole lot cheaper to buy for practiclly the same features....."still learning"

Fred,
PS7 didn't work in 8 bits!!!
It's true that many tools are unavailable in 16 bits mode but the internal computation is made on 16 bits either if the histogram only shows you 256 levels!
As i edit in linear mode i always use the 16 bits editing to avoid levels lost!

I have downloaded the trial version of PSP 8 and it looks very nice - IMO it's better than Photoshop Elements. I'm certainly not going to buy the full version of Photoshop, which costs € 1000 or more, and I don't like using illegal software!
I've also searched for an answer to your question, if PSP supports 16 (48) bit editing. Nowhere in the manual or on Jasc's website is anything about 16 (48) bit editing, so I guess it does not support this.
A very nice program which does support 16 (48) bit editing and has more complete colour management support than PSP 8 is Picture Window Pro: http://www.dl-c.com
Maybe you should ask your question in the forum of http://www.pspug.org - the Paint Shop Pro User Group.

I'm also a big fan of PSP. Jasc has a user's forum. Go to the web site, mouse over "support" at the top of the page, and click on "User's Forums". Two versions: a board like this and a news group. Jasc is also top notch with customer support.
Also, an update to 8.1 is due out soon.

OK, I have looked at the User Forum on www.jasc.com and came to the conclusion that PSP 8 does not support 48 bit per pixel images.
I like PSP 8, but unfortunately it misses some important features. Colour management support is also very basic, you can't even assign an ICC profile or convert images from one colour space to another...

I have PSP6, and 7. I downloaded 8, and sure don't care for it much. I use 6, and 7 everyday. For working up my Digital Images, I'll take PSP7 anyday.

PS: There is a new update for PSP7. It is version 7.04. Be prepared for a long download. Depending on your connection speed, it is around 10MB in size. I went through a 6pak of Beer waiting for it to download.:D:D From what I see with the new update, it is better than that expensive PS CS thingy.
