I just called Dell and spoke to Matt extension 82509. He says the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is the biggest L they have, but he is working on extending what they sell. They are not listed on the web site, he says, because Dell can sell more than Canon can produce. And yes, the 10% discount is for the asking.

OMG!! That is great!! I love Dell, and now, well they are really in a new game and I for one will get all my lenses from them if they offer them.

What other lenses Dell have? I want the 180mm Macro, I wonder if they have that one too for a good price.

Dell, is going to make B&H very unhappy...LOL

Gentlemen,

This is unbelievable...I was about to order from B&H when I just decided to look at the Forum...just a habiit...Looked at the post and did not believe my eyes. Called Matt and what do you know...it is 100% true.

Just purchased the 70-200L IS for 1169+7% florida sales tax for a total of $1250. FREE SHIPPING. Saving of over $500!!!!!!!!!

In addition I placed an order for the 10D. With the 10% off I snapped it up for $1349 + 7% florida tax.

They currently do not sell the 24-70L but will do so in the near future.

They are selling the 17-40L for 696.56 with the 10% discount.

Good Luck.

I think people should have a little consideration for those poor unfortunate people that just bought a 70-200 2.8L IS last week and not mention stuff like this where we'll see it. It could cause scares you know. And for gosh sakes, don't let the wife see it or the scares will be worse.

;D

I do wish I had known about this last week though. I got mine last Friday from B&H. Oh well, that's the way it usually goes. I'll know to check next time to see if they have the 100-400 lens.

Hello again....

I am enjoying this forum quite a bit and I thank everyone who has taken the time to respond to my posts.

Okay, this sounds like a real deal.... is this too good to pass up for a real newbie? My eventual uses for the 10D will be portrait photography - and down the line some concert photography (rock/pop).

Do I need this lens and is this such a good deal I have to get it even though I don't have the 10D yet? Or is this too much lens too fast for a newbie?

It is an "L" glass, which I take is FAR superior?

I'm going to take some photography courses as I know my knowledtge is VERY limited at the moment - but I learn fast when I'm excited about something and photography is exciting me.

It looks like Stephane got ripped off, I ordered and I paid 1169.10$ I saved an extra 59 cents!

Seriously. This is amazing. I was planning to buy it in a few months but at that price it's a no brainer.

Does anyone know if there's a place on the net to find what equipment they sell or do we have to call?

-Thanks for the tip Stephane, and thanks for this forum!

About the PhantomsGirlfriend question. This is a great deal, I don't know if it will last. If you can afford it, I would say go for it. This is a great lens for portrait if you don't mind being a bit far from your model. Also some models are intimidated by big lenses. For concerts, the 2.8 combined with the IS will allow you to do great close up shots. Make sure you're allowed to take pictues because you're sure to get noticed with that lens. If you change your mind an want to sell it, you can probably sell it for more than you paid on ebay...

ThePhantomsGirlfriend
23rd of September 2003 (Tue), 11:26
Thanks!

I have a Dell account with open credit line available - so maybe I should get this.

Yes, I know on concerts! I would have permission though. (I have taken concert shots before - but had to use my Olympus 750 C because of regulations and got GREAT shots...although I only got about 40 that were truly good enough to sell).

Okay...so maybe this lens and then one that is better for portraits like the one that was reommended to me in the Newbie topic.

I'll see if I can fight for that 10 cents...LOL!

The 70-200 4 L costs more than this in Finland!

Though Akiba in Finland is selling the 4L for affordable proice, Patrick. Others charge for used lense least as much..

I saw this message on Fred Miranda's site as well. Is this the same Dell I believe you are talking about? I think they are not delivering goods outside states though.. This is incredible price, would be good price even after customs but as usual, it sounds too good to be true. Nothing can be delivered for reasonable price to here. I would like to have that lens..

This lens will ROCK for portraits as well,. the only reason it is not usually recomended for portraits is because you can get an 85mm for so much less money,. but if you own this lens, you will be set for portraits. (and of course it is also a super lens for concerts! )

I have the 80-200L, which I am happy with, but saw this thread and started wondering...

Is the "IS" worth that much more money? I could probably sell my 80-200L for about $500, so it would cost alomst $700 more for the added benefit of the "IS". Would this really be worth it? I don't feel like I am constantly missing shots because of camera shake, but do find some out of focus.

Also, the white color is very conspicuous compared to my black 80-200L.

At the same time, I am still on the fence...

I probably will buy the 50 1/8 lens too at some point - it sounds like a good one to have around for the price?

Wow! I hope this isn't some kind of gigantic scam! I just talked to Matt about a half-hour ago, at Ext 82509 and ordered mine!

Does he ever sleep?!

Got a Dell card at the same time...I was kind of uneasy giving a stranger all that personal info over the phone. What with all the 'identity theft' happening all over the world. Maybe I'm just paranoid, huh?

Anyway, it's costing me $1,169.96, no s&h.
Estimated Shipping Date: 10/03/2003

Got my 10D only about three weeks ago, and this'll be my very first 'L' & 'IS' Canon lens. Can't wait!

Matt said the lens will probably ship out of Carrollton, Texas. Is that where Dell is headquartered? I know you were told your's was being shipped from Canon. What's up with that, I wonder?

Regards to all. And thanks for sharing the 'heads-up' about Dell's offer/sale.

Jim,

Welcome to the club.

After I ordered the lens I went straight to the Dell website and checked the online order status. And sure enough it was listed amongst my other computer orders...a sigh of relief.

I am waiting to get some good pricing on the other lens, especially the 24-70L which I am being told would be stocked soon.

Matt has been the best sales person so far. Must say I have dealt with Dell before on many occasions and there sales team are a dream to deal with.

I just ordered the 70-200 and learned that the 10% discount ends today. So, you better act quick if you are going to take advantage of this great deal! Also, I tried to use the $25 coupon shown above and was told the lens did not qualify for the discount. But, after explaining that could not use the $30 coupon last night because the lens was not listed on the web, the sales rep honored the $30 expired coupon.

Estimated ship date is 10/6. Grand total delivered $1139.96.

My wife and I have been married 42 years and are still trying to decide whether or not to have children. Perhaps we could rent yours for a couple months just to get the flavor of the whole thing.

I think our decision to defer the whole matter was based on memories of what tortures we subjected our own parents to during our 'formative years.'

As to not having any heirs, it really doesn't matter. I've spent all our money on cameras, anyway.

By the way, cheap lenses are probably not justification enough for moving over here, although we'd love to have you. As a non-U.S. citizen, you cannot be President, although you have a pretty good shot at being Governor of California. It would help if you were a movie actor, though.

To become governor, you would have to become a U.S. citizen. To be President, you would have to be born here, and I suspect it's already too late for that.

Actually, it took me forever to find it, but here is the website which lists the lens:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productlisting.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=rc968571&category_id=5416

there is no image and there is no reference to the 10% on this part of the Dell site. I called today (9/24) and got it for $1139.95, which includes the 10% off and free shipping. I also told them I wanted the $30 off on peripherals over $350 and they gave it to me even though it already expired. Shipping date stated to be no later than 10/6.

Hey this is a great price for a lens, but this is a very heavy lens, what is the best purpose of this lens. At this price, I've been debating this for the last two days and still rather have the f/4L due to the wieght and since the 10D ISO can me switch right away where I can pick up the one stop difference. I'm 6' 225lbs and can carry it with now problem just trying to justify the cost.
Please respond.

I do a lot of portrait photography and I must say that the pictures look amazing shooting at 2.8...that alone is worth the price. I have some amazing shots of a brides face with practically no depth of field and it looks amazing. Now the issue becomes wether or not to get the IS or not. I don't have the IS and have no complaints...then again I shoot everything under studio lights and never shoot slower than 125th/sec

Just bought the 17-40 for $666.56...can't wait to get it.

Too bad she's not a Clay Aiken fan. You could tell her that you'd take a photo of him REAL close-up for her. THAT would work.... (if any of you are living with a Clay fan then you'd understand this - otherwise this comment will pass right over your heads...)

If not you have to promise put down the toilet seat for a year, take out the garbage forever, AND never tell her that anything makes her butt look fat.... maybe all of those would work?

Just got off the phone with Matt (x-82509) and ordered the lens. Got the 10% off which ends today. Requested the $30 off coupon and stated that I could not find the lens on their web site last night. Matt says he escalated it to his local management who refused it. I told him I would have to eat dog food for an extra week but I understood his position. He then offered to ship it 2 day air for free. OK, $1,169 isn't a bad price to pay for this 3lb. club. Not as good a deal as $1,139 but what the heck...... 8^)

Does anyone know why Canon chose the gray color scheme as opposed to all black on some of these lens?

PS.
I called B&H and asked it they would price match and they said that $1,169 was below their cost! Humm

Be sure to mention the 10% off on all digital cameras & accessories. This brings the price down to $1169.10

kn_guy87, you ROCK!!! So does this forum! So does Dell, of course.

$1150 out the door!

You live in a nice country with a lot of history. In the US, we may be able to buy lenses at reasonable prices, but there are not many historical buildings that deserves photographers' attention.

In the UK, you may pay a little premium to buy lenses, but everywhere you go, you have many historical buildings, churches and castles. We don't have castles here in the US.

All in all, I think you are quite well off there. Everytime I visit the UK to take some pics, I pay a lot for the plane ticket. It costs as much as an L lens to fly there.

Anyway what is mit? show us your children's pics.

Here is a snippet from the Canon website regarding the gray:

Many EF telephoto lenses are white, to reduce the amount of internal heat build-up during long shooting in bright sunlight.

I looked on dell.com and can't find any lenses for SLR, nor can I find based on the part numbers you provided. What's the web site that has the lens information on it?

Thanks.

I checked my status on the Dell website this morning. It says that they are trying to fill the order but they do not have the stock. I am serously wondering if this is a pricing error on there part and if they will ship more than the few they had in stock? If this is below B&H cost It has to be an error on Dells part. Why would canon offer better prices to Dell than B&H. Just my two scents anyone else have a theory. Maybe the lense is being discontinued? Is the lense refurbished?

Why buy the Canon L 70 - 200 f2.8 when the Sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 APO HSM seems to out perform it according to review and is half the price (UK)

I'm fully expecting that in the reasonably near future, I'm going to get an email from Dell saying something like the following:

"Due to the overwhelming response to our limited-time 10% discount on selected Canon products, we cannot possibly hope to fill all the orders we've received. As a result, we a re sending you a $250 coupon that you can apply towards the purchase of any Dell system costing $1,500.00 or more. The coupon may only be redeemed on the purchase of a complete system. We regret any invonvenience. Your credit card has not been charged."

Life is tough when you're a cynic.

I've placed my order and have received the confirming email, so we'll just wait and see. I honestly suspect someone at Dell has woken up with something approximating a horrendous hangover.

Oh well.

What is going on with Dell might not be a mistake.

Various retailers get into aggressive promotional campaigns. They get all sorts of weird and unpredictable incentives from the manufacturers, and they have quarterly sales quotas to meet, and ... it gets very aggressive and complicated.

You've got channel interference going on. Canon is distributing to its Canon authorized dealers in the regular way that it has been doing it for years. All of a sudden the new players like Dell and Amazon have popped up, and instead of selling just computers and books, they figure they can sell anything with a name-brand label on it (e.g. Canon). Then you've got a few Brooklyn camera dealers that have their own scam approach, however distasteful that is to many of us.

There is no long-term lesson to be learned. Just watch the market and take your best shot.

Despite the rumors that this is a mistake,.. take into account the fact that Dell likes to put stuff on sale.

We are just not used to seeing this type of gear on sale, it never does. But as soon as a vendor like Dell carries it,. it will go on sale. It's that simple.

You're right, of course. I'm happy for the bargain, but still feel bad for the independents that can't even buy them through normal channels at that price, much less sell them for any kind of profit.

The retail world is certainly upside down from that perspective. At this pace, local indy camera stores will soon be extinct. If you take away camera/lens sales, followed by processing, and finally printing, there isn't much left for them to survive on.

And regardless of my high-minded self-righteousness, I'll be watching to see when DEll puts the 24-70L on sale. I might as well grab one of those, too.

This is specially true with Dell. In order to meet or exceed their profit quarter profit forecast, Dell would lure buyers with deep instant discounts, free upgrades and rebates. I get coupon codes emailed to me all the times after I bought a few systems (PC) from them.

Speaking of coupon code, here is another one:
Dell Home Customers: Save $25 on Peripheral Purchases over $300! (Affiliate only online offer).

Coupon Code: 5713F8997AC6

Offer Expires: 9/25/2003 - 11:59:00 PM CST

Some sale rep (don't remember the name) told me that the 10% sale ends 9/30, so it depends who you talk to.
Good luck,
Ken

That is certainly true. Though I tend to buy my large purchases online I do count on my local shop to supply many items.

I learn a lot from those guys and they're getting hit hard by the bulk players. Sure I'd save a few hundred per year buying everything online, but it's not like I can call Dell or B&H and ask them to give me their opinion of smooth bokeh between lenses or test drive three or four items for comparison or simply pick their brains for an hour because I want to learn. So I make sure I DO spend a decent amount of money at my local stomping grounds.

"Tribal Knowledge" is worth a lot more than most people realize and I really do believe that as the small shops lessen in number there'll be an increasing number of "photographers" out there with Great gear bought at Great prices with little or no idea of what they have or what do do with it.

That said, I just called my Dell Rep and let him know there's talk that the deal is too good to be true. He laughed, looked up the SKU, MSRP, MFGR#, cross-referenced the Dell#, called me back after he went off looking to see if he could find any reference of a non-IS version of the 70-200 which could have been mis-represented and said "It's correct, in fact - we've brought the 70-200 IS onboard specifically for the 10D".

I said "A knowledgable forum member asserts they know that a shipping problem was noted at a warehouse where the non-IS version was received in place of the IS version".

Dell Rep --> Orders for this item are through the roof but I have heard absolutely nothing about any issue regarding this product other than we're trying to keep up. It's not impossible that there's an error which hasn't been dealt with. I just haven't heard of it. If you come up with any more information don't hesitate to call me. I'll check into anything I can for you.

Tid bits here, rumors there. Stranger things have happened. Until there's an Official cancellation from Dell or a lens is in hand we won't know. Ain't it a nail biter!? :D :D. I know that so far, for me it's been worth every penny! :) :D LOLOL

With this fanfare Dell has entered the camera and lens business.

These days computers aren't worth as much as a lens. So this may be a good move. More competition means lower lens prices for all.

Let's see if B&H enters the computer and laptop business.

I was listening to the local computer talk show in San Francisco this morning (Bob O'Donnell On Computers, KSFO am 560), and the host told about Dell's plans to branch out into other areas of consumer electronics and related fields. He told about their plans for a new iPod-like hard drive MP3 player, downloadable music like Apple is doing now, new video products, and a couple other things I've forgotten already. Maybe this is no mistake, but a calculated program to draw attention to the fact that they intend to become a player in the digital photography niche. It's clear they've committed themselves to selling a lot more things than just computers.

Just to whip that dead horse one more time...

Dell has clearly made a mistake. Even if you believe the pricing for the 70-200mm lens was correctly entered into their system then it would be difficult to explain why Dell would do a promotion which they did not advertise or promote in any way and one for which they are unable to fulfill the orders until February (which is what I have been told by the sales department at Dell).

Everything about this smacks of an error, but Dell is the type of company that is likely to deliver in spite of the error just to avoid the ill will that would be generated if the stiffed the 540 customers who ordered the lens before they removed the SKU from their system.
