The first 2 shots were taken on Wednesday and the last shot was taken this morning...all with the 30 D and 400mm F5.6. Monopod assisted on the first 2 and tripod assisted on the last. The first 2 shots are 40% crops,,,Unfortunatley I clipped the top of the wing on the 3rd shot . I should have raised the camera slightly but I was not anticipating the wings openning like they did...this is a full framed shot wit 0 cropping so I was not left with too much room. First time in more than a week that a songbird gets closer than my minimum focusing distance of 12 feet so I missed several shots after this when the bird came closer still.

What great shots of the Yellow Warbler Gary. Fascinating to see both the fanned tail and the spread of the wings, they make an excellent composition. The colours are gorgeous with the yellow, green and blue. Incredible shots.

You're right about the clipped wing tip, but the rest of the photo makes up for it, and as Tony says, the colours are superb.

Nice behaviour shots of the Yellow Warbler. Too bad about the clipped wing tip but still looks good (having the head visible would have been even better still) . I know the feeling about clipping wings in photos because I've done it a lot.....the space the outstretched wings take up often surprises me. One thing about the 400 5.6L is the Minimum Focusing Distance but with little skittish birds I seldom run into that problem.

How lucky to get a wing stretch from a warbler...this means it must've stood still for at least a nano second! I like the first best for its profile view..
I don't know if you had your new 580EX with you, but the first two could have benefitted from some fill...I guess it might have been too far anyhow (can you say Better Beamer!).

Thanks Phreddie, canondslruser and Dan for looking and commenting.
Dan....as luck would have it I left the 580 at home. It won't happen again:rolleyes:

Very pretty shots Gary. I've got a pair in my backyard but they're pretty shy. no 'clean' shots yet.

Great shots of a pretty subject Gary.:) Shame you croped the wing in the last but still a keeper all the same. I know just how easy it is to do, I had to bin a lot of my flight shots from my last shoot for the same reasons.

The first two look good!. I have been in that ppsition with the bird actually gettin "too" close for my lens and I have quite a few shots with the extended wings out of the fram. still a good shot. Very pretty subject and nicely captured.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I have gotten what I think are better shots of this bird, mind you it is not displaying its wonderful feathers. And thanks to anyone else who looks and comments:D
