please can anyone help me my husband has a brand new canon pro 1 digital camera and i was taking pictures of my daughter on trampoline with it. it was dusk outside so i hit menu button found flash and after about the 5th or 6th pict somehow i hit a button i guess that caused it to go to video mode not knowing how to get out of video i started going everywhere and pushing every button to get back to pictures during this ...the lenz extended out to its max, frustraded as heck, i just decided to change the little card that captures the pictures ( looks like a sims card dont know what its called but i believe it has the number 512 on it) i thought maybe the card was just full could not hold amnymore picts...i took out the battery so i could take out the little card and i replaced it with another one that had not been used yet (i think pretty sure it was brand new) after replaceing the card and putting back in battery ...i could not get the camera to turn on no power what so ever and with the lenz still extended out. i even tried swapping with a fully charged battery and useing the ac adapter ...nothing , no power !! PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP? what have i done? how can i fix it? hubby has not learned of my mishap YET ...only a matter of time ...lol thank you ta p.s. if i sound a little desperate thats cuz i am... expecting hubby home on tuesday...lol ready to cry ...what have i done?? still no change anyone out there can help me? thankyou t.a.

I'm not familiar with the Pro 1 - what kind of battery does it use? Is it possible that you have put the battery in backwards, and are you absolutely sure the card door is firmly closed?

well, I have a 350D, which seems somewhat similar, and just read the manual.
First off, you're not supposed to open the Card/battery door while the camera is in operation - says it "might" damage the camera.
Only other thing I can think of is that the battery needs recharging - have you tried that?
Good luck with it -and him.

it doesn't say what kind of damage (so very helpful, not!).
I wonder if taking out the date/time battery, and then repositioning it might not help things along.

Ok, don't get too uptight yet. :) :)
You can download the manual from Canon (either usa or Canada, the Canadian link is here

Lets go back to the basics.
Do not try and force the lens back into the camera.
My S45 used to stick out sometimes and you would have to give it a gentle nudge to get it back in but never a hard push.
Do you get any error message when the camera is turned on?
If so what is it?
Does the camera try and do anything when it is turned on? If so then that should tell you that the batter is giving it some power. It might not be enough power, but you have tried it with the adapter so that should give you enough.
let me know what the camera is doing.

i can see inside where the cf card goes and where the holes on the card connect to the pins in the camera the far right pin front( 2 rows of pins) is gone you know what i mean like how your hard drive connects to the belt i know that a pin or two can be missing on a harddrive and still work can it also with the camera? like i said the pins are on the camera and the holes the pins slip into are on the card

Even if there is no card in the camera, it should still be able to turn on and give you a message that there's a card missing... or is this different in more expensive cameras?

Some reasons from my Powershot manual why the camera won't turn on:
memory card/battery cover is open
batteries are loaded in wrong direction
batteries are wrong type
poor contact between camera and battery terminals

according to the manual, you should ensure that the battery cover is completely closed. Turn the camera off - and then try to turn it back on.
Good luck with it.

It should at least come back with an "E18" error on the view screen on power on. This would mean that there is a problem with the lens, but you should get a something on the screen. If you get nothing just a blank screen, no error message or the Canon start menu, then I would assume that this is a power issue.

Does the manual talk about some sort of reset? Maybe you should call Canon and see if you can troubleshoot it over the phone. It doesn't sound like you caused physical damage to the camera. Maybe just crashed the computer type of thing.

If you switch it to playback mode, do you get a display on the screen? Try doing that and pressing the power button. And then switch back to camera mode and turn it off...

Give the camera a gentle whack at the side.. That might trigger the lens to retract if it is jammed.

this may be really stupid, but is the screen black because the lens cap is on???

I suggest contacting canon directly--where do you live--maybe they have a service center nearby where you can take it to rather than having them tell you to mail it in. In any event, I would call them an see if they can help you at all diagnose the problem over the phone, though I think they will likely tell you to bring it in so they can look at it.
if it is a power issue, then I think canon will likely cover any costs

I would also suggest calling Canon. (and, don't press every button possible next time :D)

Sorry for your misfortune. First, return the camera to its normal operating condition (batteries in, cards in, and so on). Sadly, the next step, seldom mentioned in the owners manuals, may require some trial & error to discover. What you're looking for is the hard reset sequence (often only mentioned in the service manuals). On some cameras, this it the normal reset sequence (described in the owners manual) pressed while turning on the camera. On other cameras, it is this sequence pressed without the battery installed and while turning on the camera. And on some other cameras, it is some other obscure combination of buttons and actions. Whatever you do, don't compound the problem by forcing anything, such as an extended lens. If all else fails, call Canon for suggestions. Good luck.
