Your shutter speed is way too high and looks like you were either using 'sports' mode or Av instead of Tv. You should never need to go above 1/400 for any type of car at any speed, with 1/320 being a decent average, even at long focal lengths.

The classic mistake is to try and make the images sharp by using high shutter speeds.

Watch your backgrounds. Pick locations where there are clean backgrounds, without buildings if possible and certainly without cones. Use a shallow enough DOF to keep all the car in sharp focus, but throw the background into blur. Try shooting from lower down or just a few feet up/down from where you are to get the background right.

I'll shut up for now.

One odd ball thought you might like to try is pick one circuit and go there each weekend. That way you can try different things each week and see what works and what doesn't. A bit like testing a race car.

Another tip is to look at work done at the track you planning to visit. I "stole" one of KennyG angles at Cadwell a couple of weeks back. Everyone photographs the top of the mountain at Cadwell but if you drop back a few more fence posts the track snakes nicely through the background and just adds that extra little something to the image.

I can't rmember which photographer it was but during an interview for his 80th birthday he commented that he had taken at least one photograph everyday of his life from age 12.

Other wise the only thing I'd add to Kenny's excellent suggestions is try working the three phases of a corner - Turn in - apex and the exit over the rumble strip.

Im'e no expert but pics 1, 2 and 3, although crisp and clear don't give the impression of speed. Maybe they wern't going very fast at that point or as Kenny said the shutter speed was to high.

I usually never go above 1/400s but found myself using 1/640s to begin with for the F3000 Masters at Brands last weekend, but managed to come down to 1/200s once I'd got my head around just how quick they were.

As previously stated, your views are what we [the non pro guys] need in here.

I did actual manage to get the shutter speed down on a couple of shots. I did not post them here because I was not impressed by them.

I slowed the down to 100 (i think) on this shot, just to experiment.

what aspect of them were you not impressed?

as side on pans go they're as good as you're going to get, the Golf has a nice uncluttered background too, which is nice. shame the FF has some clutter though - apart from that, thumbs up.

Do you shoot in RAW or Jpeg ?

Do you shoot in RAW or Jpeg ?

Both.. I am torn between both formats at the moment and can't decide which way to go. Shooting both gives me the best of both worlds whilst I am trying to make my mind up.
