I am not sure I am clear on terms, when someones says stop down the lens and lower the aperture what s one talking about and how do I know which is whay on the camera?

I have always shot in auto and I would like to get more in manual setup and maybe my shots would have more character.

Thanks

Stopping down means making the aperture smaller.

The smaller the aperture, the larger the F-stop number. The smaller the F-stop number, the larger the opening. The larger the opening, the more light hits the sensor.

This is the really quick, really simple answer.

Indeed, if you start shooting in the "creative" modes, you really begin to think about the shot. You don't just think about the subject, but also about the result: the subject photographed by you. Depth of field, contrast, exposure.

Any good photography handboek will tell you about the theory, but training is essential. Luckily this is almost free with digital cameras.
