Thanks MDX.
I have the entire sequence right up to the hay bales... The EMTs cut his leathers off of him and rolled him away in the ambulance :-( No helicopter ride which means no critical injuries.

Excellent shot. Your perfect timing getting the rider in the air adds a lot of action to the image.

Thanks welshman... I wish that it was a bit better focused... it's the first frame of the series and I had just shot to the left of the incident so the 'ole 1D was tryin to catch up!

Hey Rob nice meeting you. I only caught it after he hit the ground. Unfortunately that section of the track claimed a lot of riders that day.

Rob
I think focus is pretty good for a crash pic. Normally we are so suprised by the crash we just end up holding down the button to try and get all the action, forgeting about everything else.
Good work post some more from the series.

There are still 4-5 frames to go... this crash had a lot of energy!

Howdy,
Great pics!
Are you going to submit them to Roadracing World for their crash page?

Howdy,
Also, if you don't mind me asking... What's the exif data look like? Shutter speed primarily, but I'd also be interested in aperture, iso, and focal length... Seems like the shutter would have to have been pretty high to freeze the tumbling rider like that.
One thing I'd like to get better at is switching quickly from planned shots to "catch the action" shots... Any tips there?

Since I was working for someone that day I was more concerned about getting the shot/framing that they where after. I was a little stressed at times. Just trying to produce the shot the boss man asked for. I was more relaxed as the day went on.

Marka,
Both images are 1/400@f10 with my 100-400L+1.4x
For me, I tend to shoot with both eyes open most of the time which allows some peripheral vision. Also use your ears... there are certain tell tale sounds that happen before and during a crash. The above was caught visually... as I was completing this shot

I saw the other Ducati in my peripheral vision as it bumped another bike (not in frame) and I moved the camera right...to capture the crash happening and the rider mid air. It's a lucky day when you catch the crash from start to finish! Having a zoom lens can help as the crash happend I pulled wide to see which way things were going and then zoomed back into the rider (second image).

You did look more relaxed at T9... how did the TC treat you? Was it muddy or did the shots look good to Dito?

The converter was fine. He thought I was using yours. But later that day he made me use the Canon converter. I guess I'll have to buy a canon converter just to ease his mind. He only wants all Canon products to be used. It's understandable. Nothing personal. Strictly business. I remember you where questioning the 1.4tc w/100-400. It looks like it worked out for you.

Although the 999 is equipped with newer technology, the 998 still proves more stable in certain situations...

There is more to this story... Apparently it was the 699 bike that caused the incident not the bike off camera (left). After the restart the 699 bike was involved in another crash less than a half of a lap into it (the carousel).
