Water is full of amsaing photo opportunities - lets see what you can do with them! :D Thanks to JimmyG for the idea.

Please make sure you have read and understood all the rules before submitting your photos.

Remember, everyone is welcome to join in. You don't need to be an expert or to have a fancy camera, this is all just about having fun and, through that, getting better at photography.

Just please make sure you've read all the rules before sending in your pictures.

As per usual, you may submit up to two photos for this competition.

Good luck everyone!

RULES

2) You can submit up to two pictures, and change these if you wish up to the time that the competition ends.

4) Photos must be no larger than 800 pixels at the longest dimension and a maximum of 200k. Click here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=663519&postcount=26) for help on this.

5) No framing of pictures, text or copyright notices. This is to ensure anonymity but please remember that copyright continues to remain within the photographer.

6) This competition is a learning experience so we ask you, where possible, to take photos espeically for the contest.

Water does sound good.

I have an unfair advantage: my May club competion was 'Water' as well and the variety of interpretation by the judges/voters was 'interesting' to say the least.

The judge in that comp stipulated that the subject was 'Water' - he pointed out some entries where the photo had some water either in fgrd or bgrd but the focal point, the story of the photo was not 'Water'.

Photos of water skiers and surfers were a problematic because the photo would have to be captured a moment depicting the drama, "the awesome power of the wave" or whatever, rather than just how neat a feeeling it is to ride the water.. Also landscapes and seascapes in particular skate a fine line in his opinion. Eg; an Alaskan touristy photo of icebergs and glaciers is technically meeting the subject right on target; but is it gonna impress and/or take out the contest when its compared/judged against another entry that has an imaginative photo depicting a macro of a splash or something.

Anyway -this should generate a wide and surprising range of photos and be a good 'un!

Did they manage to come up with a neat definition of 'water'?

Well he pointed to the world famous -now cliche- dramatic photo of the base of a lighthouse being pounded by foaming sea from all sides.

http://www.alphapix.com/Images/lajument022p.jpg

He said if there was action, it was to be action by the water, of the water, for the water. Flooding water, falling water, water fountains, boiling water, erosive water, tidal waves, blah blah are all fine.

But are we gonna worry about it?

Given the open nature of the voting, the winning photo may not even be one that meets the strictest sense of the competition's theme. Perhaps a parched riverbed with a well placed cow skull would meet the criteria in that the scene was caused by the absence of water? If it's a striking enough photo, it could be a contender.

This should be right up my alley as I'm a hydrogeologist, unfortunatly all the water I deal with is underground! You have me keeping my eyes open again! Any plans to follow up with Air, Fire and Earth? Thanks again for putting this together!

No, we'll stick with an open definition and let the voters decide what qualifies.

The first two photos are now online :)

No doubt, Carzee.

The topic could be "A single can of Diet Coke on a white sheet of paper in a dark room, shot at ISO 200 in color with side lighting", and there would still be a "surprising range of photos" here. Sometimes I want to ask the photo poster just how their photo fits the topic, because it's that far from what I interpreted the topic to be that I can't see it.

I think some "very specific" competition topics would actually be fun, because although they initially sound fairly concise, there are so many ways to visualize it.

Like: "An Egg"

Not "a dozen eggs", or "some eggs", or "eggs", or even "a chicken egg", or "a raw egg", or "a whole egg".

Just: "An Egg"

I bet that would result in 50 different interpretations.

Hmmmm.......I think I'll use a can of caffine free diet coke in an orgami boat (white of course!) sitting in a pan of fixer, in a "darkroom" with lighting provided by 52 bulbs from an old sign off of the Vegas strip that used to be on the "side" of a building! :p

So far, I see one standout sure winner . . .

Wish I could find something that I liked for this theme. Hopefully by the closing date I can come up with something to enter anyway.
