Hi,

In the market for a wideangle lens (for a 350d). I've been looking on the forum at the tokina 12-24, sigma 10-20 and the 12-24 and they all seem reasonable. I'm happy to get a digital only lens but just aware that Canon may stop making EF-S lenses at some point.

Given that I have a 350d and no immediate plans to upgrade could you guys please provide your thoughts/recommendations?

Many thanks

Ben

i dun think canon will stop making EFs lens anytime soon, not in the next 5 years or so I believe with their new release of 17-55/2.8 lens

I'd get the best of the bunch, the EF-S 10-22 and no worries about the end of EF-S lenses, they are here to stay, Canon just released one, the 17-55

My vote is for the Tokina. Great lens at a great price. Very solid build and feel.

Hadn't heard about the new EFS lens. Thats good, means they aren't gonna go FF across the board anytime soon.

How does the Canon wideangle comare though to say the Tokina?

Many thanks

Either will be a great buy. I researched options a while back and ended up with the 12-24 Tokina and was very happy with it. Not sure the Canon adds any value, speaking personally, from the shots I saw when researching. I did find the Toki too wide at the 12mm end but again personal preference. I would now rather have a 17-40mm L if I was looking for a widey again as it is just more flexible as a wide/walkaround. Similar price to the Canon super wide. The Sigma 15-30mm EX, which I now have, is really very good too and can be had at good prices second hand. More useful range tho' still a bit short. Both the L and the EX are fine with FF too.

If you will use UWA in weddings also, then 24mm of Tokina will be handy for group shots.
Otherwise extra 2mm on wide end from Sigma and Canon is a blessing.
I vote for Sigma 10-20. Here are some shots from my Sigi:

Optics on all three are pretty darn good.
Canon is wide at 10mm and has the widest range.
Tokina is little softer at 12mm than at 24mm and has a bit of CA, but it's built like a tank.
Sigma is cheaper and wide at 10mm.

I've had the Tokina and used the other two a bit. If money is no object, I'd go with the Canon. If it is, then I'd go with the Sigma over the Tokina b/c of the wider 10mm, USM motor, and the cheaper price.

All are tested at photozone.de as well and Popular photo just picked the Sigma as the winner of the third party ultrawide zoom as well.

Great - thanks all for the replies.
