Have a very old Canon Powershot S50 which has served me well but is ready for replacement. Headed to Africa for a photoshoot and dont want to be changing my DSLR lenses on safari so if I have my 400mm lens mounted I'd like to have a good point-and-shoot nearby in case of a closeup or landscape opportunity. Not too worried about expense, looking for shot-quality, optical zoom, and ease-of-use for quick reaction time. Any thoughts on my best option? Probably will want to crop so at least 6mp, open to more. Thanks!

I'd say go look into an A610, S2 or one of the newer elph models with IS. I here they're pretty nice, but you may want manual controls, oh and in my opinion now that I've been using it the MY COLORS are VERY fun and come quite in handy at times for the fore mentioned landscape shots.

second the previous suggestions, though if 6mp is important to you than you may want to consider the s3--however, the s2 comes highly recommended here--the differences between them--especially with regards to pic quality is really only the 1 extra MP--which I am not quite sure is even worth it since the sensor is the same size.

Really and truely after thinking a bit on it, I would go for an A610, as there is no point in having a lot of megapixels on a small sensored camera anways (A620) as its yeilds pointless from the small sensor.

You really don't need another zoom lens camera, thats what your 400mm lens is for on your SLR.

Also, the S3 is a waste if you have an SLR as your only paying for the higher ISO settings and a few other minor add ons which I can't even remember.

So again take my word for it and pick up a Canon A610, they're EXCELLENT for the money.

Feel free to see what I've done with mine in the gallery in my sig.
