I took this shot of a spiky plant .. thing (It's either a flower or a seed pod)

I'd like to know how I can take this kind of shot and have the background come up a bit.. not focus-wise.. I know my stops, it's just I have a hard time with the exposure that includes background without killing foreground.

I was thinking slow-synchro flash to get the background exposure and snap the foreground up.

Taken with my 24-70L on 70mm from 2-3 feet.

You can try to take a few pictures at different shutter speed without changing the aperture on a tripod, then use Photoshop to merge them.

I also would like a little more DOF to keep the plant more in focus.

If the weather provides I'll try to set up a tripod shot tomorrow. To be honest, I've been leaving the 'pod in the car a lot lately. I really need to get a carrying case for it. We'll see how it turns out.

I'd prefer the DOF more toward the front, myself. That's what I get for hand-holding the shot on a breezy day.

The lens you seem to be using here has a shalow DOF hence the blurred background.. I'd say if you want more background take the pic from further back with a zoom lens and then crop the pic a little more. Still I don't know why you'd want the background in that much. It's interesting enough as a macro shot.

I thought he meant brighter background.

Yeah, brighter. I wanted sparkly bokeh I guess.

Unfortunately, the weather has not been co-operating :( storms every day this week and wind otherwise.
