Have a EOS10D with the Canon 17 - 40F4 L lens. I am now looking for the upper end. I am a little low on cash and can't quite stretch to the new Canon 70-200L with ISM. I came across the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 which offers me a couple of stops over the Canon 70-200F4 L at the same price level. Anyone have a constructive opinion on the Sigma?

Thanks,

Jag

I use the 70-210 f2.8 (older version), and I ABSOLUTLY love it.
See sample pics at www.doorhof.nl

I never saw the 70-200 in action but according to my customers they love it.

Greetings,
Frank

I use it on my 10D and love it. It gives excellent results. I have the Canon 17-40mm "L" as well and i think the Sigmas images are every bit as good. Feel free to check out my gallery,. many of the wildlife photos were taken with the Sigma 70-200mm and ALL of the fashion show was with the 70-200mm in rather low light at ISO 800 & 1600.

FYI,. I will most likely be selling this lens as despite the fact I am very happy with it,. I will be receiving a Canon 70-200mm with IS soon. I intend to do a side by side comparison of the lenses,. but I suspect the IS will win me over. If not I will sell the Canon instead.

Let me know if you are interested in a used and proven to be functional Sigma lens that is about 4 months old.

I am also seriously looking at this lens as an alternative to the expensive Canon 70-200 F4L. The f2.8 is a major factor I am looking at this lens.

CyberDyneSystems, I also do the occational fashion shoot and find that ambient light is quite good and so I need a fast lens. May I know if you used the f2.8 of the sigma in your fashion shoots? How is the sharpness on the long end of the lens.

From the image above it seems to be pretty good. How sharp is the original image?

TIA.

At the time I was new to the 10D and did not yet have the Adobe RAW plugin so I was shooting jpeg.

Most of the images wetre taken at f/2.8 although at one point I dropped down to f/3.something (3.5?) and lost a litle shutter speed. Most were 800 iso although some were at 1600 ISO.

The original is very sharp, and of course this was all available light. With a raw image I think I could have getten even better final images. The prints from the original are fantastic.
