Well, this train car is actually modified from an old Toronto street car (you can see the grip poles outside). This train runs just outside of Huntsville, Ontario and it's a great little ride. They even manually turn the little engine around for the return trip.

This photo has been modified to look old.

I like the photo. You couldn't really tell from anything in the photo what period it was shot in either so the effect works well. Mind sharing your techniques?

Glad you like it!

I used the program GIMP (for Windows sadly as I don't have Linux up and running)

I used the script Old Photo, but found I disliked the results so I did it manually. First I raised the contrast, and washed out some of the highlights. Used the script to add the sepia, then used the "faded edge" script which allowed some control (I wanted it narrow), then added noise (Old Photo script created a bad noise level) then blurred the noise. I wanted to add some scratches and water stain, but the 'coffee stain' script gave poor results (at least this time around). And I had no luck in drawing decent scratches.

This is the photo of the engine getting turned around. I've used curves to lighten the engine a touch, and added the same sepia treatment. The train is in Huntville, Ontario.

The top photo does have a nice 'old feel' to it. I wish you could see the childrens faces though. Also the person on the extreme left just peaking into shot spoils it a bit for me. Otherwise it's a good shot and I like the composition, quite original.

Martin.

Thanks.

I took this picture for the ceiling! I liked the bright highly reflective ceiling, plus the "clear to the engine" view. Yes, if the people in the front row (actually back row now that the engine switched ends and was now at the far end) had not been there the photo might have worked better. The expression of the lady with the kids makes up for it I feel.

Interesting. The photo has the old look, but the woman and child have "modern" faces. People in old photos usually have more worn faces and rigid postures, not that you can do anything about that! Don't think PS has that filter yet.

The turning loc could definitely pass for old.

Oh how I wish the lady and kids in the front of the frame were gone and all you had were the two guys in hats. That would have been SO cool!

JohnT:
The reason the folks in old photos are so rigid looking is they had to pose for many seconds. So getting comfortable and sitting or standing stock resulted in those poses.

I think the first candid photo of someone was of a fellow who stopped and got his shoes shined. Everyone else (including the shoe shinner) was a blur.

RedShoesGirl:
Yes, the photo would have a completely new ambience, but for me, the kids play a part of the whole experience of the ride. They had so much fun. They were just in the engine, and saw the fire, controls and got a squished penny. Without them, the picture would be more tranquil and sedate... Sigh. It would make a great picture without them, but the train ride itself was a lot of fun. Just like the kids and ladies faces reveal. :)

Oh, please don't misunderstand me, I really like the image just the way you shot it. You're right, it would have been an entirely different photo without the fun people. Your vision is what is important here.
