I am borrowing a friends 10D just to test it out. My 28-135 mm lens works great on my elan7. On the 10D it autofocuses in the programed zone but not in the creative zone. Do I have something set wrong? The same thing happens with my Canon 75-300 USM.

What exactly to do you mean when you say that the lens won't focus. Do you mean that you don't get a focus confirmation? Or do you mean that the lens focusing mechanism doesn't even get actuated?

Here is one things you can check. With the 10D in the Creative Zone, look at the LCD at the top of hte camera and see if AIServo is selected. If it is, change it to One Shot or AIFocus and see if that corrects your problem.

I have it in the one shot mode. It won't focus at all. I don't get any confirmation of focus either. It is as though the lens is set to MF

Ok, here's another thing you can try. Using your thumb, press the "*" button on the back of the camera. If CFn04 has been set to use the "*" button for focusing, then the camera won't focus when the shutter is pressed. In the Basic mode, CFn04 is overridden so that focusing can be done with the shutter release.

Thank you! That fixed it. I also change the custom function 10 so that I could see the red light --- and it is good!

Thanks!

My 'defective' 10D had the very same problem. Wouldn't autofocus in the creative zones with any lens. It had worked fine.. I was so pissed, ranting and raving and plotting to strangle the nearest Canon representative I could find.

Um, after about 10 minutes, I REMEMBERED setting the CFN04 to use the '*' for focus the night before. God, what a flippin' idiot.
