The new Nikon is merely a Cosmetic upgrade to its top professional predecessor [ according to features listed in DPREVIEW].

Will a 1Ds Mrk-III follow ?

Hmmmm,
I didn't know that Nikon D2X is going for under $4000.
Personally, I think come August/Sept, seeing as no other body is slated for upgrade/replacement, 1DsMII is due for an update. Instead of the Mark III version, I think a II N version, just like the 1D Mark II N is likely. Just like with the 1DMII when it was updated to N, I smell...
Picture style
Bigger LCD
other smaller updates seen on 1D Mark II N.

I wouldn't be surprised if Canon adds the larger display to the 1DsII as a final tweak of this generation of cameras. On the other hand I don't think that the typical 1DsII user is all that concerned with the LCD in the first place and as it won't affect sales in any way Canon might just as well skip this update and concentrate on the next camera body instead.

The price on DPreview is in Sterling Pounds, which makes it more than $4000!
That's a nice camera. I would still prefer a 1D2N, though.

That trimming seems very small on that sample picture.... 8fps on such a small part of the frame.. or am i missing something... Rather go with a 1d Mark II N like Krapo!!!

Interesting. Since Nikon is using CMOS. Does this mean that Nikon people will not be telling me CCD is superior? Although its still a DX camera. How else will move to CMOS?
[edit] When will canon put in a high speed crop feature. I think it would be great, especially on FF sensors. Giving me the best of both worlds.

Yes,. this looks a lot like the 1D MkII to ---> 1D MkIIn evolution..
Nikon also has done with the D70.. which has been upgraded twice If I recall?

davidfig's comment on CMOS versus CCD reminds me of when Porshe came out with the 944 and 928 design. They ran adds about this "new concept" of putting an engine up front. Duh

Just remind any Nikonians that Canon makes its own sensor, Nikon just gets whats available from other folks - like Sony.
As to the upgrade, Oh Joy they just added features Canon has had for over a year. Although they have the high-speed crop until they added the mask, there has been a lot of gripes over not being able to see the cropped area in the viewfinder, so a lot felt it was kind of useless.
As to Canon adding it, Why?
I would prefer a 8FPS x 16.7MP camera over a a crop camera and I already have the equivilant utility of a crop by either using PS CS2 or DPP (and I get to choose it after the fact) or I can use a lower res Jpeg if data storage is my issue.
A faster crop speed might be nice if because of processor limits I had to choose crop for speed or full resolution at slower speed, but I have some faith in Canon that they can produce a 22MP 8FPS 1DsMkII upgrade camera by Photokina 2006. If I get my 22MP 8FPS, why do I need high-speed crop?
Maybe a good feature for the 5DMkII. 12 or 16MP at 4FPS, 8MP at 8FPS. But not for the 1 series.
On second thought a cropping feature itself could be useful at time of capture to avoid unwanted lens issues when needed, but only if the viewfinder masked down to the cropped area.
Just my opinion,
Nothing to see here, its only a Nikon, please move along.... :)

For me the point of crop is that is will increase FPS and crop factor. Think of this as a switch from wedding to sports photog. It makes the camera a little more useful, in that you do not have to buy two cameras for different needs. This would mean that I could use a 24-70 and 70-200 and have it extended to say 300 with crop (talking ff sensor here). Best of both worlds.
