I'm using a 10D and am ready for the next lens. I'm down to two choices. I wonder if anyone has thoughts about the tradeoffs.

1. Canon 75-300mm lens, f/4-5.6 with Image Stabilization, 1.4 lbs

2. Sigma 100-300mm APO lens, constant f/4 aperture, 3.1 lbs

I'd really like the image stabilization and lighter weight of the Canon, since I'm planning on using this lens hand held half the time.

But one of my guidelines (from those more experienced than me about photography) is to always get the the constant aperture lens for the better glass + never getting caught unable to make a fast moving shot.

Anyone have any thoughts about my choice? Anyone have experience hand holding an Image Stabilization lens? Does it really help two stops worth (per Canon's web site)?
