I am amazed at the amount of excitment the Dell price deal on this lens has generated. I too have looked at this lens and have read lots of reviews and have found that people recommend the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO HSM lens instead. I am not fortunate enough to live in the US where you seem to get better value for money but in the UK the Sigma lens is less than half of the price of the Canon lens.

Link below points to some of the reviews I have read recently.

The Canon 70-200 f4 L can be purchased in the UK for -
The cheapest I have found - £530. :-))

In fact I paid less than 1/3rd the price of the Canon IS lens for the Sigma new. I paid $560.00 and the Canon IS lens goes for about $1,700.00 usually. The Sigma is a great deal indeed.

Agreed. The Sigma is USUALLY the better buy but I just placed my order for the Canon IS model for $1144. At this price it was just too tempting.

As a newbie I have not compared Sigma to Canon L, but I too could not resist. Especially being $500+ off any internet deals.

I already own the 1.4X-II Canon convertor and need a fast ~300mm for field sports. I guess the convertor helped push me toward Canon (plus the reputation of L glass).

At this price we are essentially getting the Canon 70-20mm IS version for the same price we would need to pay for the Non IS version.

As the non-IS version is pretty much double what the Sigma equivelent goes for I opted for the Sigma and ruled out the IS version alltogether at it's usual price of $1,700.00+ ( i couldn't see spending $700.00 on IS )

Now I will be able to test these lenses side by side and see how dramatic the difference is both Canon Vs. Sigma and IS Vs. no IS (merely by turning the IS off )

I too was not even considering the IS version due to cost. Please post your comparison when you are done. I'm interested if 'IS' is worth even the extra ~$400 more than the Sigma. (Of course I am not getting any steadier in my old age).
