One of my favourite lenses (mine's the 1.8 MKII). If I'm not at the race track, then this is what I like to have stuck on the front of my body. You can't beat it for the price!
Here's a few of mine...

I'm BRAND new to DSLR, and have been loveing this lens. So far this is my favorite from it, not technically great, but it knocked my socks off to realize where I could take this if I learn.

My guess (since I love to guess even if I'm wrong), is that he put a couple of model cars on the bottom of a glass coffee table, on top of a shelf lined with and surrounded on three sides by grey seamless paper. Then places a few droplets of water with an eye dropper in that incredibe pattern on the glass on top, with a light sourse coming from the side of the bottom as well as a little from the top. So how close am I?

That's pretty much what I was thinking... Would that reverse the image in the drops? My mind isn't working right to figure that out right now. It is an awesome effect. I was thinking of trying it myself. It would be a fun experiment for sure.

The drops reversing the images is just physics of light. Go grab a spoon and look at the inside, you'll be upside down and backwards, because the concave of the spoon (and the inside of the drips) create a focal point that flips the reflection. I too think it would be pretty fun, and great for a low apature.
BTW, Happy Father's Day to all of the Men out there.

I had a feeling it might be, but it was late and my brain wasn't workng.
It would be cool. Maybe I'll give it a try today. Anything to play with my toys. ;)

Glad you like the shot... I was pretty pleased with it (although I didn't notice the window reflection until after I'd cleared up!).
You got the method pretty much spot on, except the drops were glycerine (they hold the shape better than water). Lighting was purely natural, from a large window.
I've seen some awesome photos using this approach... much better than this one. It's definitely something I'll try again when I get around to it.

I took this one with the nifty fifty. (Whenever I am off 'photo duty', I still carry a 10D with the 50mm f/1.8 in a tiny bag, couple of extra batteries, and a polarizer just in case).
BTW: On 'photo duty' days, usually carry a backpack with two bodies, their grips, 6-8 batteries, mem cards, a charger, 4 lenses, Bigma, Monopod and sometimes Tripod.

What a fantastic shot, SRPhotographic! Saying that, there are so many excellent shots in this thread I'd be here all day mentioning people. Hooray for everyone with a nifty fifty!
My Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII literally arrived five minutes ago, so here's a very quick shot (nowt special, and no people around, unfortunately, so you'll have to put up with Barry the Bear  ). I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this lens! I intend to have a play around with it today :D

I have a question about the 50mm 1.8. Is there a difference between the 1.8 and the 1.8 II? Sorry, I am an idiot, but I want to get one today :)
twalker294
29th of July 2006 (Sat), 12:39
The II is the current version and the only one that is available (except for the 1.4 of course.) The Mark I was the original and it had a metal lens mount and focus scale. It was built more like the 35/2, 85/1.8, etc. The Mk II version is all plastic and more cheaply made but optically it's identical to the Mk I. The Mk I fetches around $140 if you can find one.
