I just purchased 10D from Gateway. 1499.00 Less 10%= 1349.00, NO SHIP CHARGES, plus local sales tax. Still less than EBay, & local dealer, and no Bull SH----, like you receive from the NY/Bklyn Phoney Scamsters- Royal & Digitalliquadotors.
Any idea to avoid sales tax?

Andrew,
I do not see it listed on gateway's website. How did you go about purchasing it?
Thx

Like Dell, you got to phone in.
Gateway do carry more lenses but hardly ever with any discounts.

Andrew,
I have ordered from and liked the service I have gotten from 1)Abe's of Maine in Brooklyn (purchased then a Canon EOS 50E, Sigma 28-80 and 70-300 lens and UV filters to go w/ lenses) and had no problems in Dec, 1999; 2) B&H, Manhattan Ordered the Sigma 120-300 F2.8 EX/HSM/APO/IF lens and 2 filters, a UV and polarising filter one each about 6 weeks ago. I just ordered a 16-35mm F2.8 Canon L glass lens and a few other bits. No problems to report either time other than the box was a little beat up. Thankfully that was a robust lens and no defects noted. I know where you are coming from, but there are a few unscrupulous ones out there in the NYC area; there are also a few good ones there too. It should also be noted that I have had some fun with RitzCamera. You're gonna like this one...
I rang them at 3 pence/min (about 5 cents/min) to ask them about the 10D. I ordered it and got it a month later, end April, 03. The first time I rang them, I got a flunkie that I couldn't understand and they couldn't understand me. You kinda need a real good grasp of English to be in this business! However, I can speak a fair amount of French which is cool! Again, being near Canada makes sense to learn French in school.
>
I sure as hell will NOT repeat WILL NOT learn Spanish because some dumbass who imports to the US refuses to learn English. (I had more than my fill of Spanish and problems in my 3 yrs I spent in Tucson, Az. Two words describe that one: Never again!) I'll just say that I hail from the Northeastern US originally. Enough of that!
>
But I ended up calling right back and after listening to the next person say "Thanks for calling RitzCamera..."
I immediately, not missing a single beat said, " Wow, someone that speaks fluent English...I'm impressed! The last flunkie I got couldn't understand me and I couldn't understand them..." This operator appogised profusely and I mentioned that I was calling international, and said that it was costing me a small fortune and pressed on w/ my enquiries.
Speaking of which, in case you're interested, to dial to England from the US is 011 44 (drop first 0, if applicable) +(xxxx xxxxxx). From England to US is 00 1 (xxx) (xxx-xxxx) where "x" is a number. You drop the first "1" as it is already the country code. It's a little weird at first, but you get used to it! That's my 5 pence so enjoy!
Cheers,
Canuck

10D doesn't appear on web sight, when you speak with a rep tell them an EOS 10D, it's in stock and scheduled delivery is Oct 1.
Also check Dell, same offer, maybe less- saw another forum someone stated a price of approx 100.00 less from Dell, they are closed now, will call tomorrow AM, if so will have Gateway price match.

I hope those of you buying their camera from Gateway or Dell never have a problem with your camera. Who are you going to call? What kind of technical advice do you hope to get? A camera is an investment to which you will add much in the way of lenses and accessories. Price should be only one consideration. I suggest buying from a retailer who has a good price, responds to customer service questions in a prompt and knowledgeable fashion, and that knows cameras. Try BandH or JandR in NYC.

They will come with full Canon warranties and Dell and Gateway (especially Dell) are known around the world for having excellent customer service?

Mine arrived from Gateway on Wednesday. I placed the order Saturday night.
As Cyber says above, Gateway and Dell offer their own warranty and the hardware is fully covered by Canon. If one wants, an extended warranty can be purchased from Gateway or you could go for a third-party warranty (Mack).
As for support from a "real" camera shop, I don't have anything within 50 miles of me that I could rely on. I would be at the mercy of whoever is on the phone, be it B&H or Dell or Gateway...etc. I will depend on the warranty and the extended warranty that I buy for hardware issues.
For me, if I have questions, I go to where the experts are to see what they have to say.....dpreview.com, Fred Miranda, here....I'm not able to walk into a great shop and get the info I need. Those that do are fortunate.

What do Dell or Gateway reps know about photography? Are you going to call Canon when something you just bought at Dell or Gateway doesn't seem to work right? B and H has professional photographers and lighting specialists working behind the counter. Who will you ask at Dell or Gateway which filter works best or how to check for vignetting with a circular polarizer or which tripod to buy? I don't want to pay more then I have to, but I'm always concerned about who to turn to for support on a product after I buy it.
My 2c,
Scott
