After shooting Speedway for the first time earlier in the week, it was nice to get back to 4 wheels and the BARC Championship Racing series at Croft. Could only make the Saturday due to other committments, and for once the weather was fantastic - in fact the most important thing in my bag was factor 35 sun cream!

Here's some shots from the day....

#1 Pickup Trucks - gutted I didn't get to see Sunday's races

#2 Legend running a bit wide at the exit of Sunny

#3 A different view on the first corner of one of the MG races

#4 Very tidy Lotus 7 lookalike

#5 Sideways Legend - great entertainment these guys

#6 MG ZR (or Rover 25 depending on your point of view!)

#7 Low angle shot at the Hairpin. Busy background, but the commentary bus in the background immediately identifies it as Croft.

#8 and #9 - Northern Sports & Saloon Cars - best racing there was on Saturday.

All the shots were taken with a Canon 1D and 300mm f4 L IS + 1.4 TC.

As usual, any comments or feedback appreciated.

As excellent as always Simon - You had a better day than I did - I couldn't hit the side of a barn today.

If I have to pick one then Number 4 please. :)

Very nice Simon. The pick ups were the pick of the races today. Was great to watch.

Excellent set Simon, the detail from that 1D is very nice indeed. I'm really tempted to get one.

The Pick-Ups were very enjoyable today, although the 2nd race was halted for a red flag after one of them had a disagreement with the tyre wall exiting Sunny Out. I was standing there with KevB and the impact was stomach-churning.

Ian and I both suffered severe AF problems with the heat haze. I wonder if it is more of a problem with the MK-II? We run almost identical setups. I see you caught Peter from Autosport in the Croft bus shot. Shall I tell him that he is now in picture as well as words?

That's an interesting observation Ken. My hit rate for the Legends race and the NSSCC A, E & F race immediately after lunch was not good (I only took a few shots at the start of the MGOC race before moving from one end of the circuit to the other). The sun would have been pretty much at its strongest around that time, and could be responsible.

Thanks Geoff. The 1D may not have as many pixels as the more modern cameras, but the quality of the pixels it has are absolutely top notch. Shame the second Pickup Truck was halted.

Cheers,

Simon.

Oops...I should have added that they re-started after the Red flag

It's interesting to note that a lot of us had problems with the haze. I had a complete nightmare yesterday although today was better.

Thanks Kev. Don't rub it in about the pickup truck races ;) , I'm gutted that I missed them as it is.

Great set of shots

Give me heat haze issues over all the pouring rain we've had this season:)

Thanks John.

Have to say that around the middle of the day, I'd have nearly given anything for a spot of cloud cover.

Cheers,

Simon.

Thought I’d finish this thread off with an amusing story of something that happened to me before I’d even got to Croft for the BARC meeting.

Woke up to glorious sunshine, so thought I would give my Mk I MX5 a run out. The car is my pride and joy, but due to the weather recently hadn’t been started for about 8 weeks, so as well as enjoying some open top motoring on the back roads to Croft, the thinking was it would do the car good to get properly warmed through etc etc.

The car is garaged, and stored out of gear, with the hand brake off and a couple of chocks under the offside front and rear tyres stop it from rolling forward. Pulled these out from under the wheels, jumped in the car, dropped the roof and started the car. Didn’t even turn over once before firing up – got to love the reliability of these Mazda’s.

Into gear and start to edge out the garage. Had moved forward maybe 1 or 2 feet when there’s a horrible metallic crunching noise from somewhere around the front nearside corner of the car. You know that horrible sick in the pit of your stomach feeling you get sometimes? Well that’s how I felt thinking that I had probably dragged the bodywork down the side of the garage wall or something. Switched the engine off and sat for a couple of seconds plucking up the courage to get out of the car to see what the damage was. By the time I got to the front of the car, I was met by the site of fluid running out the front of the garage and down my drive way. Full blown panic now and more than a bit weak at the knees, I gingerly peaked around the front of the car fearful of what I was going to find……

What had I done? Well there’s a moral to the story and it is “always remember to move the box of beer that you’ve stored right next to the front wheel of your car in the garage before trying to drive out”. Thankfully no harm done to the motor, but I’ll need a trip to Asda for some more beer for the weekend.

Cheers,

Simon
