I am wondering if there is a 'petal' hood for the canon 50 1.4, made by canon, e.g., can you use a diffrent hood than canon specs for this lens? thanks, Ian

I really doubt if you need a 'petal' lens hood for a 50mm lens. Just about any off-the-shelf lens hood would be okay. The main reason for the petal shape is to avoid vignetting on a wider lens. Unless you use a very deep lens hood, I doubt you'll have a problem. I checked the Canon website, and they recommend the ES71 II which is not petal-shaped, so just about any lens hood with 58mm threads should fit.
Remember, though, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
