Challenge #70 Sky

WINNERS

I have this hard time just choosing only 3 winners. I Just have no enough time to comment to each of the pictures for I'm already so delayed posting the winners. Every picture is just amazing. Different techniques and approaches. So here are my top 3.

1st Place: Horses on a misty morning by George7

For me, it's looks like a painting. The horses, the layered mountain at the background is just amazing. Clouds/mists are everywhere. I was asking myself, of all the entries, why I chose this as the 1st place? The setting is just perfect. I was looking at the picture and I thought is it's kind a blurry. But looking at it again, the mists makes the background blurry. The first mountain looks darker than the farther mountain. At the top, there's a thicker cloud that's going against the other clouds direction. The sky, the background, the foreground, and the time it was taken is just a package. It just caught my eye.

2nd Place: Eye in the sky by gkuenning

Very sharp and detailed. I like the creativity too. Technically, of all the entries, it's one of the best so far.

3rd Place: End of another day by In Japan

Another spectacular entry. I'm not sure if it's sunset or sunrise but I assume it's sunset. Cloud formation is impressive. The torii (I'm not sure if it's a torii since I learned that torii is a gateway) at the foreground adds an asian touch.

I have to admit that I had the hard time choosing the top 3. By doing that, I have to choose my personal favorites. Technically and artistically, all are winners.

I hope everybody enjoyed the challenge. Everything is just awesome.

Thanks.

Congratulations to George7 and gkuenning on taking the top two spots. Both are well-deserving. I think you are right, _OC_, George's photo does resemble a painting. And thanks, _OC_, for placing me in your top 3. It was a nice topic that attracted quite a large variety of entries. I really enjoyed andrewaaa5's captivating shot. Love the repetitious neat-fitting windows, interesting composition, and of course the color swap. Gewb, I think I've seen you post a lightning shot before. What's your secret? I also really enjoyed Teekay's vivid sunset along with marie's serene capture.

As for my shot, it was taken on the island of Miyajima which is located near Hiroshima city. It's known as "one of the top 3 most beautiful spots in Japan". The feature of the island is Itsukushima Shrine and the internationally famous "floating" torii gate that _OC_ mentioned in his comments. If you care to read more about it, here's a link.

I have to agree In Japan on your comments. The lighting, the flaming sky etc are all amazing. Everybody just deserves top 3 spots. On your entry, I think I've seen that in movies (either Crouching, Memoir or Hero).

Congratulations to the winners.
I agree, George7’s misty mountains are more like a beautiful painting, and gkuenning’s Eye in the Sky is a luminous picture with unusual perspective.

When I was ready to post my entry, I thought “My picture is to dark to post after gkuenning”, but I posted anyway.
Then in Japan posted End of another Day and I thought “Well, nobody will notice that my picture is there” ;) .

Well deserved top places, really. I must admit that my personal preference goes to the in Japan picture for the landscape itself and mainly because the dynamic range of light and shadows is superb.

I think there were many other skies with their own personality.
As a paraglider pilot I was terrified with the threatening curled cloud by abat. Is it all real? Was there a little help from Photoshop? Either way, it is a beautiful composition!
Contrasting with its power are the golden quiet landscape of marie and the pleasant pink clouds and foreground silhouette by grandadraymond.

Other strong pictures for me are the beautiful marina and the powerful storm by alans220, the hard-to-shot lightning by gewb and the Sunset over river Severn by mistergibbon.

I also can guess the sky in the dark behind the beautifully lighted balloons by Terrywoodenpic.

Thanks to all for sharing these beautiful pictures and to _OC_ that found an interesting topic and got a lot of fine entries.

wow, that was a lot of entrants : ) nice too see all the pics as usual...

I really enjoyed andrewaaa5's captivating shot. Love the repetitious neat-fitting windows, interesting composition, and of course the color swap.

it was taken in the courtyard of Euston Station, London, so if you are ever there, just look up : ))

Congrats to the winners - George7, Gkuenning & in Japan for their most deserved beautiful & dramatic images.

Thanks _OC_ for the great topic. It would have been hard to pick the top list from all these so wonderful shots of skies.

Well done all! :p

Congratulations everyone on some great shots and in particular to George7, Gkuenning and In Japan.
To answer Rpolitsr, my shot was straight from the camera (in colour too). It was a rotating cloud feature beneath the base of a thunderstorm - not a tornado, but some artifact associated with the storm's updraft. I'm a bit of a cloud freak hence my interest in _OC_'s challenge.

Rpolitsr, I certainly noticed. I thought your shot had a particularly eerie feeling to it - perhaps it's the combination of the tree and full moon... It definitely has a distinct mood...never an easy task. I also noticed how your moon doesn't look like a white spec as it seems to appear all to frequently in my attempts.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to _OC_ for his choice of subject.
I also liked very much the colors of KC Jewel and marie shots, the great contrast of Boutty's photo and the depth of rpolitsr' "full moon".

Hi again!
My computer just survived a Trojan attack (BraveSentry) and a malicious program (Pest Trap) that came through the internet connection. Uff!
Thanks to McAffe and RafaPolit the XP Registry (that esoteric master file of Windows XP) is clean again.

As always, I found interesting posts here!

Better yet. I never saw a 'thing' like that before. Awesome!

Yeah! A BAT near by would be great, but they do not venture into our garden. Thank you in Japan.

I also liked very much the colors of KC Jewel and marie shots, the great contrast of Boutty's photo and the depth of rpolitsr' "full moon".
Thankyou. I think the twisted branches of the tree helped to the sense of depth in it.

I liked your birds also; everyone in a different attitude. Leonardo da Vinci would be interested in your lesson of birds’ flight.
