Does anyone know how to get the CANON 10D to focus without releasing the shutter? That is, I want to simulate pressing the shutter release HALF WAY within my application software.

Thank you.

Not sure of what you're trying to do but try turning the auto focus off and see if that's what you want.

Perhaps I did not explain it clearly enough. I want the AUTO FOCUS on but when using remote release (through the SDK), I have not been able to find an equivalent to the PRESS HALF WAY on the shutter release button.

That is, if using the camerally manually with AUTO FOCUS on, pressing the shutter release button half way forces the camera to refocus.

I am looking for an equivalent using the SDK.

Any idea?

I have the latest SDK and also a D30, D60, and 10D. I have not found any function calls that will just pre-focus and not fire the shutter. Would be interesting if that can be done although I’m not sure why you want to do this?

The reason I want to do this is to reduce the lag time when my software, through the SDK, releases the shutter.

When taking a portrait, for example, minimum lag time is critical to capturing an expression.

By "pre-focusing" the lag time would be significantly reduced.

OK I understand. Good luck with your research. You may be forced to either manual focus, that would be just fine assuming distance from camera to subject is constant, or continuous 3FPS bursts once focused on your subject.

If you are going to use the camera with the SDK for portrait shots, I would think that the camera to subject distance is fixed so can't you just turn the AF off after you prefocus the camera yourself at the beginning of the session? I would think that that way you won't have the "shutter lag" associaited with the focusing, no?

Actually, during the sitting the camera to subject distance can change somewhat so I want to have the AUTO FOCUS available.

Yes, when the AUTOFOCUS is off, the lag time is greatly reduced.

I wish there were a simple way to get the "half push" function on the CANON 10D.

By the way, do you know if the CDACTIVIEWFINDERAUTOFUNCTIONS works with the CANON 10D?

I am going to guess not because it appears to be part of the VIEWFINDER functions. My guess is that the VIEWFINDER functions are NOT available to the 10D because it has a mirror and does not provide viewing on the LCD during PICTURE TAKING MODE.

Any comments?
