I have seen a lot on this and have not seen any one confirming if the price is correct or incorrect on this canon lens. Also how are you getting them to take off 10% off the already low price? Also what is the official low dell price?

Dell's official price was 1300.00 but the product is no longer listed on thier website. A lot of people went crazy when they saw that price.

Well, I didn't have to ask for the 10% off, the Dell Rep just said, "As an introductory promotion we are giving an extra 10% off on this lens". All I can tell you for sure is my experience. I did order this lens. The rep checked the manufacturer's numbers twice for me and it is *supposed* to be the IS version. The price total was $1169.96US including free shipping, and it is supposed to ship on or before Oct 6th.

I believe several of us in this forum have ordered it, but none of *us* have received it.

And that's all I know for sure. Everything else is speculation.

Take care,
David

Yeah it was nuts. They sold upwards of 540 lenses and are backordered into at least February 2004.

There are about 3 or more people over at dpreview who've received the 70-200 IS as well as at least one other known in transit.

Dell's site for a short time listed the 70-200 IS for $1,299.95.

When I placed my order I asked for the 10% Digital Camera Discount and Dell Home $30.00 (Digital Accessory) coupon and they threw in Priority Next Day shipping at no charge (that's priority next day after one becomes available so who knows how long it'll be). My estimated ship date is October 2nd.

All told, if I actually receive this thing it'll have cost me $1139.96.

Nothing can do but wait and see. Eh, and remember to breathe.

It is all ancient history now. We may never know whether it was a giant Dell pricing goof or a trial ballon to see what the potential market could be. The product is no longer available. There are many of us who have sore butts from kicking ourselves because we were too slow at pawning the wife to get cash to place an order.

The opportunity is gone so it's time to move on.

Well next time maybe someone will be so kind as to post a thread urging us to take advantage of this stellar deal so we don't miss out... :D :D :D

So you are saying that I can not call dell and order the lens with out paying $1600 for the lens? Or the the standard price $1300?? Or they are not selling it at all any more?

I'm one of the 540, and I have a call in to Dell for a status update. When (or IF) they call back, I'll try to get some answers to your questions.

Here's my quick take on the situation. I've been following it on three sites 'cause it gives me something to do while I sit jealously in the dark. ;-)

Several people have received their lenses (shipped straight from Ingram Micro) and Dell is doing their best to make it look like there was no pricing error. Don't get me wrong, there might not have been an error. It seems that most people that ordered and left an email address got an email stating that Dell had sold more than 540 lenses, had 40 in stock, and were expecting about 100 per month to be available. This pushed the back order (potentially) into February or later. They decided to pull the sku from the system and can't take any more orders for it until they have the stock to handle the orders. Again, they make it sound as though they might again (someday) be available at this price, but I'm really not sure that I believe it....

That's what I know....but you can bet that if I scrape up the money, I'll be hassliing my corporate Dell rep the next time I place a big compay order....

Well, I finally got through to my sales rep at Dell, and she really didn't have any new information. Contrary to their website which says my order will ship by October 6, she said projected shipping dates actually go out to February and possibly beyond. Moreover, she's unable to tell me where I am in the queue---my order could ship anytime between now and then.

When I told her I understood they'd sold over 500 units, she said the actual number was closer to 1,000. I then asked her if they were taking any more orders, and she said they weren't. I also asked her if this was a mistake by someone at Dell, and she said it wasn't, although I don't really know how she can be sure. Finally, she asked me if I wanted to leave my order in---I said, “You bet.”

I have plenty of time, and I do have the 75-300 IS to hold me over. For $1169, I'll definitely wait.

Thought you'd all like to like to hear the latest in this sordid tale.

You guys are all bastards!

This is the lens I would most like to add to my collection, but I have 2 problems:

1. Here in New Zealand that lens sell for the equivalent of $2300 US.

2. I don't have any spare money, I am still paying off my credit card from my purchase of the 10D + accessories.

Feel free to donate money to my "bring a smile to a poor photographer" charity.

Otherwise I wont get any L glass till some time next year. :(

Believe it or not, Dell has proven to be an excellent site for deals like these. You can call them price mistakes but they may be nothing more than loss leader advertising. Last Thursday, Dell announced they were entering the consumers electronics arena due to slow PC sales. What better way to say hello than to make a deal with Canon and let them "slip" out the back door at cost! How many people in the photo industry will now check the Dell site weekly looking for another deal? In their wildest dreams, B&H and Adorama wished they could get this many photographers buzzing about a deal they got. I'm sure it was not a mistake as they did this last year when they introduced their newest LCD panels as well. I picked up the 18" ultrasharp lcd for $384 when they were selling for $600 on Ebay! The deal lasted for a few hours and was then pulled but it kept people talking about it for weeks. Dell's pretty smart if you ask me.

I just received the infamous Dell voicemail informing me that my new shipping date is 11/13. Order was placed on the 22nd. Bummed, but actually somewhat relieved.

It gives me more time to come to terms with the expenditure ($1139.00 is a big deal no matter how good a bargain it is) and more likely position the buy as a "Christmas" purchase ;).

*Interesting to note however, I hadn't checked w/Dell's Order status page until today but I see there are two 70-200 IS Lenses under different order numbers under my account.

I called and my Rep said that he must have made a mistake when I had called back to stack a coupon on my original order. He said both orders were solid, just delayed due to the backlog and he asked if I wanted to cancel the second lens...

hmmm... now let me think about that for a minute... my precioussssss.... ;).

What with the new rebate!!!!

".... For example, if you purchased lenses with rebate values of $25, $40 and $50, which would have a regular cash back value of $115, we will triple that and send you a check for $345! With savings like that you can’t afford not to get those new lenses."

Must resist ;) credit card exceeding max limit hehehehe

I'm sure you can help out some member in here that missed the boat and been kicking himself for the last few day :D:D:D

Sketcher,
I, too, received a message on my answering machine Friday apologizing for the delay in shipment... and, announcing that the new estimated shipping date is 11/14 (my order was placed on 9/23).

Like you, I was dissapointed but, relieved that the delay will give me a chance to better deal with the financing of all this high-priced stuff. LOL.

I'll think of it more like a Christmas present now... and feel less guilty. I owed it to myself, after all!

You inspired me to look again at my email confirmation to see what date I actually ordered mine---it was September 24th. I have not received a phone call as yet, but chances are I'm pretty deep in the queue. It looks more like mine really will be a Christmas gift, or possibly an anniversary present (mid-January). Then, there's always Valentine's Day or Easter.

It will be just my luck that I am dead last in the queue and right after I receive the lens sometime early next year, Canon will announce an across the board L lens wholesale reduction and the new order price will be $950.

I'll have to sell it to get the sniper rifle.

This is just general information. In a lot of sales organizations (e.g. Dell, IBM, or the corner TV store), each salesperson is paid by salary and commission. They can't really live on salary alone, so they really have to get some commissions on sales. Many such salespersons are given the right to discount any sale by as much as 10%, and in some organizations, some salespersons try their hardest to deal for the full price, and in other organizations, some salespersons just don't try so hard, so they give up the 10% discount easily if that will make the deal go easier.

So, for those of you out there trying to purchase some camera equipment, keep this in mind. If you want a discount, it does not hurt to ask. On the other hand, some organizations will tell you "the price is the price, period".
