Don’t every try this... and if you have already... STOP!!

Anything with excessive kickback like the METZ 60CT-4

I'm unsure if small battery powered flashes like Vivatar models react the same way as larger ones do... if anyone knows please add to this thread.

I checking my camera after some kickback corrupted some data to make sure the sensor is in tact... not sure if I fried any components but it still shows the image on the LCD and I'm not using the same card or flash for this test... I've also taken an image of a white surface.
Does anyone know of any other test I try?

Is there a warning in the manual that I missed?

Any help is appreciated

Any help is apreaicated

Hello,

You may want to check the flash's voltage. If it is higher than 6V I wouldn't recommend using it. I was wondering about it just like you, and that is what I was told. You may want to confirm this.

Could you elaborate a bit on what you're seeing? And which camera had you used?

Pretty much any EOS older than the 20D has a maximum trigger voltage llimit of 6 V. Using a flash with more than 6 V trigger voltage is likely to fry (if not immediately, over time) the shutter. The 20D and newer models accept up to 250V trigger voltage. But I haven't heard of high trigger voltages damaging the sensor or the card.

I'm Using the 30D with a Lexar Pro 80x 1GB

Does anyone know the voltage of a METZ 60CT-4

If you've got a DC voltmeter, you can measure it yourself. Connect the voltmeter to the two PC terminal contacts on the flash cord to take the reading. The 30D is supposed to be rated at 250v.

I don't understand what you're saying you see. Are you seeing a corrupted image on the flash card? Or is the image of the last picture still staying on the back LCD? Your description's a little imprecise.

In any case, if you're concerned about data corruption, the flash shouldn't cause that to occur. However there have been enough bad experiences with Lexar cards that I wouldn't think of getting one.

The battery has 4,5Ah 6V.... I'm assuming its 6V... but does that have anything to do with the kick back of the capacitors? I seem to be getting different answers from my Lab/Photo Store... They are telling me that the METZ 60CT-4 will damage the sensor and electronics if not equipped with a Safe sync

In the LCD I can view half the files... The other half is corrupted... The LCD shows a black Screen with a yellow "?" and its saying corrupted files.

The Camera cannot connect to the computer...

The PCMICA Device worked long enough for me to recover half the images...

I've also been trying Photorescue for many hours before handing my Card to the Lab to get the Tech to work on recovering the Data.

Thanks everyone I feel a little more at ease…

There used to be a list of photo strobe voltages, listed my make and model...but the site has recently disappeared or is under construction.

It was here http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

I have the Rebel XT and I bought a safe sync to use with my Metz 60 CT. It works fine, but if I had a 20D, I think I would just use the PC connector. BTW I also use it with a Vivitar 285 HV. No problems.

I used a Lexar card and ended up with some corrupted files. Are you sure this is linked directly to the flash or by chance is it just your card?
Just wondering.

I will be getting a new card after all this... I'm still unsure if the METZ has a higher than 250V output...

It would be nice if that site worked Big Mike...

I just found the manual and it tell me the 60CT has a "low-voltage thyristor ignition" This is probally my safe sync.

They also tel me that the Sync voltage is aprox 9V

So the problem may very well be my card... one red X for Lexar

(it wouldn't be 1 red X... you'd just be adding another one to an existing long list)

By the way, when are you coming by to collect? ;)
